Ye Bhi Theek Hai, Ep 2: Are our views on religion and the elderly outdated?

  • Is religion, which has shaped human civilization like few other forces, inherently uncivilized? As ‪@KunalKamra‬ and Sanjay Rajoura dissect this highly charged question, they find many a layer of contention. Communism, spirituality, and political ideologies all come into discussion.
    If this wasn’t provocative enough, they jump headlong into another hot-button subject for much of Indian society: the treatment of the elderly. Should you respect your elders merely because they are older to you?
    Watch or listen to find out what they think, and see if you agree.

      The problem with this discourse that I see is not defining the relegion at the outset - is it the practice of relegion or the theoretical doctrine, does this also include philosophy, which at least in Hinduism stems from relegion. Sanjay is criticizing the practices of religion, Kunal is defending the theoretical principles of relegion rather spiritual aspects of it. I think no rationale individual can defend how relegions are practiced.

      @@prabpharm07 Philosophy used to be science when we didn't understand laws of physics/nature. Philosophy is a wonderful subject, I love it and I promote the study of it. But in the current times, without taking science into account, philosophy is simply a corpse. And I don't think Sanjay is simply criticizing the practices of religion but religion as a concept and is quite accurate to do so. If a theory is flawed, doesn't matter how nice the paper or the font, it will do well to stay out of a trash can. That's precisely what religion in any form is. Still people ought to have the choice to follow or what they like and this is where being civil comes into the fore. It should kept it in pants and not forcibly administered, that's all.

    Just want to add my perspective on the science-spirituality-religion debate.
    Spirituality is more at odds with religion than science. In fact, it is not faith-based at all. Buddha would be horrified if people reached enlightenment by hearing and believing what they were told instead of their own observations. Just like science, it involves reaching the truth though pure observation, dropping all your biases and conditioning

      @anishaansari330 2 года назад +1

      I totally agree. Spirituality based on Religion is all about doing your homework well by looking for the truth based on your own observation and rational approach. You shouldn't believe whatever you listen from other people without doing your own research and analysis. 99% people are forced to believe on whatever their parents say as the sole truth and don't do their own study. We are too lazy to look for the truth rather we would like to believe whatever our elders and gurus teaches us with blind faith.

      @@VARUNSINGH-ri2he Children's mental and physical states are weaker. They haven't even had any social experience yet which warrants even more attention. So, by that reasoning, they deserve the same amount of "respect". But, we don't say "respect the children", do we? Actually, "respect" is an ambiguous word. Most people mean 'be polite' when they say 'respect'. The two are different but thought of as one. Politeness is a type of behaviour. Respect is a sort of admiration or appreciation for someone's status or accomplishments.
      As far as the argument of an older person being more experienced and hence deserving more respect goes, it depends on what kind of an experience he has had. A teenager who has travelled a lot and come across many different people and societies would be far more 'experienced' than an old man who never even left his village nor his rigid values. What kind of a valuable experience would a narrow-minded or orthodox old person have which he could bestow upon the next generation? It's not just about age. And demanding respect merely for being older is quite ridiculous. Just don't be unnecessarily rude or respectful to anyone regardless of the age.

    I loved the discussion on both the topics.
    But in case of the first topic, I think the scientific counterpart of spirituality is Psychology. Therapy is a scientific tool that helps you achieve a sense of who you are and your past, and move forward with positivity in future (with a focus on your mental health). Sanjay Rajoura does mention briefly about brain and neurotransmission in line with it. However, I do agree with Kunal Kamra that it is a privileged position for us to have and undermine the power of spirituality. A lot of people are not privileged enough, to even know about therapy or mental health, have no other way but find happiness and peace in spirituality and their faith.

  • @VarunBandha

    Instead of comparing science with spirituality, we should look at science v/s philosophy. The scientific method has certain philosophical assumptions that underlie its metaphysics. However, those are not the only ones out there. Also science cannot provide a moral system or a political one, those have to be decided by human beliefs and priorities. This notion that science is end of all knowledge is a very mistaken notion.
    Spirituality in that sense falls under philiosophy and is therefore seen as such. There is jump from religion to spirituality, we need to perform a similar jump from spirituality to philosophy. Hinduism is infact built on that. There are many different branches of hindu philosophy which are different ways of thinking about the universe and our place in it.

Reading back my comment it seems like I was criticising you but I wasn't doing that, it was as a whole point trying to just add to the first bit but perhaps I should have phrased things more carefully. The only bit where I thought maybe I can add some perspective is by suggesting Sam Harris's book which makes a compelling case for science as an arbiter of morality. In the sacred texts, we can find uplifting calls for peace, justice and mercy, along with the most genocidal passages in the literary canon. Conscience is our guide, whatever trappings we might choose to clothe it in."

    WoW! what a fantastic conversation. I totally understand where Kunal is coming from. But this new trend of having to look neutral on everything has translated into always equating left and right. Left and right are not equal and opposite to each other! They may or may not be opposites but they are inherently contradictory to each other. Let us not always simplify things to an extent where it becomes so diluted that the central argument goes missing!
    And Sanjay...I am a fan of yours. Would love to meet you someday in person and talk ! I hear your are from Delhi.

      Also the point is very true that religion, myth and folklore, (whether it is Gods or Santa Claus or the Monkey Man of Delhi) may help under-evolved cultures (or even the growing minds of children) to understand their world through story telling and parables. But as minds and cultures evolve, these things should be shed and man should evolve to higher-order thinking based on science.

    It's been hard for me who knows hindi to read the Quran and it's meaning because it's original language is Arabic (which is mostly translated by some relegious scholar). Same applies to Books of other relegions whose original languages are way older than my native ones. So how can one just read and understand things by themselves without stepping stones by a guru or teacher? I believe that a guru can be a stepping stone as not everyone has an autodactic capacity and maybe later down the path one can move ahead by self

    • @donpasto59
      @donpasto59 2 года назад +6

      Most translations of Quran were/are not done by Islamic scholars but by scholars of Classical Arabic. Part of the reason is most Islamic scholars are afraid that they maybe held responsible by Allah for mistakes they may do while translating Quran.
      And Quran was revealed to the Prophet to be read and Allah promises that he has made things clear in Islam, so basically the logic of needing a guru is against Islam, Islamic scholars are not typical gurus, they don’t remove anything from a hat.
      They dwell only on Islamic texts to guide Humans through their books/lectures, that is why Islam is very much theocratic and it claims that it is complete and needs no guru/scholar to modify it.
      Most of the people you see in Indian media with beards/skull caps are no Islamic scholars.

    What I think about science and spirituality is..."both cannot be compared...the first is making our path easy on the earth and the latter is making our path clear to get back to that supreme being which is believed the root of all souls. I am fan of Sanjay and Kamra and respoect the both. But here, I think both are needlessly argue (though polite) over this topic. The spirituality what Kamra is talking about is not the thousands of religions appearing like mashrooms but a teaching which is far different from them. And, science is science who can argue there.

    Why are we comparing science and spirituality, science deals with physical form of life while spirituality deals with non-physical form of living. They are 2 separate entities which should be co-existing as a whole. Religion is a total different fascade humans have been living in trying to find the common grounds between science and spirituality.
