    I’d rather borrower against my bitcoin at a very conservative loan to value ratio and use the monopoly proceeds to cover my fiat life expenses. Will likely take years before we have sufficiently trustworthy lenders to custody the pledged collateral, but I’d rather take that risk than the risk of selling the best collateral in the world.

      Me as well. It's not really as safe option yet. Hopefully in 5 years or so, we will be able to do it safely as opposed to giving it to a CEX like LEDN for 13% interest on a 50% loan to value.

      @ronatola Yeah, the interest rates will continue to decline over time as the Bitcoin lending platforms mature and Bitcoin's price in USD increases. My long-term plan is to borrow against my BTC stack, as well. But I will wait until BTC gets to certain adoption levels and USD price.

      Its not simply just about having the need to take profits, its about doing the best one can. I have to believe if you ever invested money in any asset is because your intention is to make profit out of it.
      What can guarantee you that BTC will be a successful asset in 5 10 or 20 years????? Technology moves ridiculous fast, it may happen BTC will be replaced by a superior concept a superior technology that provides better benefits etc. Hence taking profits is a mechanism to guarantee your investment is successful. There is something called RISK MANAGEMENT, it seems to eb many people here never heard of it

      @@bullsharkdb You’ve successfully displayed your lack of understanding of bitcoin’s unique fundamental value proposition/utility. The wheel was an innovation that forever changed the world because, from an engineering standpoint, you can’t innovate a better version of the wheel. Bitcoin is similar because it possesses the ideal characteristics of hard money/store of value. Those characteristics being: absolutely scarce and decentralized (to name a couple). Can you think of a better way to create absolute scarcity besides having a limited supply of something? How about a more decentralized protocol, can you innovate something better than proof of work? Study the fundamentals, and stop regurgitating mainstream financial tropes, you’re embarrassing yourself.

      @@Johntron08 BRO It seems to be you do not understand the reality of the world we live Today. Nevertheless, even if you were 100% right, I was talking about taking profits as a result of a simple mathematical formula and common sense.
      During the life of BTC, at least 50 times BTC went down between 30 to 40 %, to regain profits (swing trading).
      From the point of view of a trader, who engage in swing trading that is a phenomenal DATA, to make profits.
      From the point of view of an investor the same. At some point in 2 4 5 years at some point BTC will enter a bear market again, and will re start the process, as any other financial asset does.
      Whether btc will change humanity or not, time will tell. You can bet your balls on it and lose them, who knows. What is a certainty is assets go through swings moves and volatility affects their price, at certain time frame.
      I talk profits, you talk saving humanity.
      FYI: I comprehend the mechanics of BTC better than you think, but I am a trader. Traders we do take profits when the opportunity is there.

      I am a decent person, chill out kid. i have been trading BTC likely before you even heard of it and if you read carefully, which you didnt, you would have noticed I mentioned that part of a profitable strategy is having some of one's stack of BTC held (preferably in a cold wallet).

    I think you have to put people into two separate groups. There are people who buy bitcoin as a strictly speculative exercise to make a profit (fiat thinkers) and could care less what bitcoin is or ever will be. On the other side you have the people (like Matthew) who view Bitcoin as an investment in the greatest store of value instrument that has ever existed and will always increase in value and makes no sense to ever sell it. If you are only speculating (fiat thinker) then yes it probably makes sense to take profit at times. If you view Bitcoin the way Matthew and lots of others do than it makes sense to never sell.

      Agreed. What video doesn’t touch on is how to become “rich” ie actually enjoy the fruits of its appeciation, if you can’t take profits. What is the point of HODLing if it stays forever locked away? We go to the grave with all our BTC in cold storage?

    • @SuperheroArmorychannel
      @SuperheroArmorychannel Год назад +1

      @@Bitcoin_University A productive asset produces a monthly income which i can use to live off of. Examples: $500k in US Treasury bills produce 5% interest = $2000/month. $240k in Rental properties produce 10% annual returns = $2000/month, Dividend stocks, etc. All of these are productive assets i can use to live solely from the interest. Gold and bitcoin are not productive assets and do not produce any yield to live off of. So how exactly can a person live off of their bitcoin? Or gold? And if you NEVER sell your gold or bitcoin in your lifetime then how is it any different philosophically from fake money you print on your office printer and then lock in your safe? It’s only real when it’s realized in the physical world otherwise it’s just a mental abstraction. Wealth allows people to be more free such as the productive assets i listed above, so how does bitcoin or gold allow someone to be more free if it’s never sold and produces no income? Serious questions that I’d love to hear someone explain to me. I currently own bitcoin, gold, real estate, treasuries and land, but i don’t see the point in converting productive assets into non-productive ones because then I’d be less free and have to actually work to pay my living expenses as opposed to living 100% from my investment income.

    • @SuperheroArmorychannel
      @SuperheroArmorychannel Год назад

      @@mothradave My thoughts EXACTLY! Bitcoin and Gold are wealth storage batteries but they can only store wealth and are non-productive assets which do not produce any yield like rental properties, dividend stocks, treasury bills, etc. If you lock away $10 million in bitcoin and never spend it before you die then was it even real? How is it any different philosophically from just telling everyone you have $10 million in your safe but you never spend it? It’s only real when it is real-ised.

    • @YomaruSan2
      @YomaruSan2 Год назад

      @@mothradaveThis is where collateralized loans come in. Rich people don't stay rich by selling off their valuable assets, instead they take low interest loans against their assets and enjoy the fruits of their labor that way. This is also how they avoid paying any taxes since taking a loan is not considered a taxable event. How do you pay off the loan? Take out another loan to pay off the first and rinse and repeat. With an appreciating asset like Bitcoin you can do this forever and never sell a single coin as its value outpaces what you owe. Such loans exist right now for BTC but only from a few places but that will grow as adoption increases. But yeah that's the cheat code of wealth, hope my explanation helped!

    At some point we want to build a home with Bitcoin here in El Salvador and be mortgage free. Currently we are renting.
    The timing is difficult for us because we know the value of the Bitcoin we spend will increase faster than the value of the real estate, and that this will always be true.
    So building a home means sacrificing a lot of future wealth. For example, if we build for $150,000 worth of Bitcoin, the time will come where that Bitcoin would have been worth $1,500,000 to us. In terms of opportunity cost, that's an expensive house indeed.
    That said, we need a home. We are in our late 30s early 40s and don't want to rent for much longer. It's a tough one.

    The fact is that BTC symbolizes the future of cryptocurrency, and traders are wondering if now is the best moment to trade, I feel you should examine the situation more closely before jumping to any conclusion. BTC's price has been fluctuating over the previous days, signaling that the market has become unstable and that is it impossible to anticipate whether it will go bearish or bullish. Others are patient, while others continue to trade with no risk. It all depends on the pattern you're trading and the source of your signal, i earned 27BTC starting with 3.6 BTC in just a few weeks implementing Howard daily trades. I managed to collect more than tips and tricks.

    From Matt's video "Trading Bitcoin, Taxes, and When To Sell Bitcoin" back in Jan 2021:
    Let's say that I bought 1 Bitcoin at $20k. I decide to sell it at $100k after 1 year and 1 day. $80k profits. Long term capital gains rate.
    Pay 20% + 3.8% + 4.63% = 28.43% on $80k profits = $22,744 in taxes.
    So now I am left with $100k minus $22,744 = $77,256.
    If Bitcoin falls from $100k down to $77,256, I can get my 1 Bitcoin back. Was it worth all that trouble?
    That's betting on an almost 25% dip just to break even in Bitcoin terms.

    I think this is a bit dogmatic. Ultimately, although we can see all the reasons for why bitcoin SHOULD become a global currency… it doesn’t mean it’s not risky and it WILL become one. You need a certain amount in a traditional asset even if it’s cash. People have families to think of and can’t just gamble all their money.
    Additionally, if you take profit at top of bull cycle, or let’s say somewhere near top. That still might look like 30% below ATH when you ignore the short term spike. Then, you wait for 60% drawdown in bear and re-invest. If you re-invest then you might have doubled your btc holdings and also you might see a 10x or more from that point on. I think you won’t see those returns with buy and hold

    I'm in the camp of shaving of Bitcoin to buy things. In the end of your can buy freedom with bottom i think that's great. But only if you skim a bit of the top. If Bitcoin is 1 million dollars and you need a good car for getting around and it costs let's just say 0.01 BTC then that's great. But never ever would i give up all Bitcoin for a car or a house. Hope that makes sense. Like your said, just shave some off the top perhaps. 🧡🧠

    For me, I'll be selling the vast majority of my Bitcoin at the top of the bull market, wait for the 70%+ dropdown in price, then reinvest 80% - 90% of that money back into Bitcoin again.
    BTW, I would only recommend doing this if you're competent with TA (reading charts) otherwise it would be wise to follow what Matt says in this video instead.

    Mat, was going to ask you about "Taking Profits". I remember hearing Larry Lepard recently talking about BTC overshooting its fair value price in the 2024 halving & selling a few coins to "take some profits" - maybe around the $120k - $150K range. Even if the idea was to buy back the BTC at a later lower Fiat price - are you still against "taking profits" to buy back BTC at a lower $ amount? (Obviously there will come a day when this is not possible - I'm talking pre 2030s. I personally find this to stressful & just Hold.... theirs something more pure about just Holding.)

      I've lived through several of these. More than you'd think. Selling is always a mistake. You might feel good for a while when the price is diving. But then you have the problem of buying back. Which when the price is down and dropping and has been for months or years is a lot harder than you'd think. Just think of the last bear market bottom. When price dipped below 16k everyone just "knew" it was going to 12k, then 9k. Instead it nearly doubled to 30k. In a very short time. Same thing has happened every time, at least going back as far as I've been following which began in 2010.
      Buying and selling is actually the riskiest thing you can do. From MTGOX to FTX and now Coinbase it's not like exchanges are risk-free. Plus there's the government risk, between the time you sell and want to buy back how easy/hard/impossible will they make that?
      Never sell the apex hard asset. Never. Don't get sucked into the pipe dreams of scammy traders. Learn from those who made that mistake and lived to regret it. Buy and HODL. Let time do the rest.

Also, people need to live. Why would you never sell your Bitcoin. What is the pint of that? Saving for the future when you’re dead! Come on dude. There’s a happy medium.

    This is an argument I have had over 13 years now. If I go into western Union and exchange one currency for another I don't pay tax on any perceived profit for example where I am is GBP I get more USD for my GBP but pay no tax, I pay an exchange fee. So why would I pay tax on a currency when I am exchanging one for the others perceived value? If that's one million pound there has been no profit made only the value is differnet. I wouldn't walk into western union and be taxed when exchanging to go on Holiday abroad.

    lol its tough. Taking profits is hard, not a good idea with an investment you want to benefit from long term, you will end up with less. If bitcoin is going to be a money you use, taking profits is a no brainer, because if you buy high and sell low you are not benefiting from the scarcity property of bitcoin. Therefore "spending" should be done strategically at this stage of bitcoin. So as not to let market volatility take away your spending power. Spending should be done strategically during pumps, and reserves refilled during dips, areas to set limit orders can be found using simple Fibonacci and stochastic RSI on higher times to cut the noise.

For example, I’m sure that you, a retired person, rely on investment instruments that generate income to help cover your living costs, instead of simply spending down your savings over time. As I'm all in on Bitcoin, I am looking to become an expat and open magical self-sustainable Bitcoin BnB's in Belize (no capital gains, 1% prop tax), each powered by solar and wind to handle everything including a Bitcoin Mining rig to heat water for showers, laundry, and dishwasher. And guests will be able to connect to our private node.
    Is this more of a portfolio diversification than taking profits? I'm not young, have health issues and want to enjoy life and not just leave Bitcoin to the kids, but also something tangible with family memories as well.
    I still wish I sold some above 50K last time so I had breathing room to live beyond just getting by on our monthly Fiat income. And I'm sure there are others who feel the same way which will make breaching $100k harder than most expect
