At 13:56 the final move says why Hikaru is a Stockfish engine. The rook was already trapped and when the opponent made a move the eval bar dropped from bad to worse. Hikaru found that it’s better to make a pawn move to either open the position up so that he can bulldoze with his rooks or make the position closed to get deez knights into play. And also knowing that although the rook can now move one more knight move would trap the rook again! Most people here would just take the rook!

It's funny how Hikaru facial expressions are subtitled when one is used to his stream! "What am I doing" "What? This must be wrong, I should be winning there, wait a minute"
There is some poetic irony that the less Hikaru cares, the better he plays. The less emotion, the more effective. Chess is a ruthless logic game afterall. The less you care, the better. Look at stockfish and alphazero. They sack without giving a single fuck as long as they are winning the position. Unfortunately, human's aren't as good as computers when it comes to figuring out whether or not one side is winning.
Yeah, hikaru is one of the best instinctual players. He can just feel when stuff is there or not. When the game is only of semi-importance he almost always just goes with his feeling because it doesn't matter even on the off chance he is wrong. Now obviously, he is a beast at calculation too. But when he is playing seriously with high stakes, he often runs into the situations where he feels there is something or feels x move, but his calculation can't compute it for whatever reason (the move might of course actually be wrong). In those situations he almost always errs on the side of his objective calculation, which tends on the side of the more passive more easily seen move, and as a result tends to miss more of the wild opportunities he can seemingly magic up in online chess. Of course, I must add that this is all relative to his >top 20 position globally.
Yeah last week's meltdown against Wesley was quite uncharacteristic by Hikaru relative to the amazing performance at Fisher Random. I think he put too much pressure on himself that last game.
The fact that hikaru can play and enjoy it and just smile at whatever the result is shows he's really matured in his chess. Really a world class player.
He was pretty disappointed after losing to So but still shook the guy's hand and headed out. Losing out on lots of money can make anyone upset, I'd hardly call what he did "storming off" tho
@@thelowlybard oh. Was that against Wealy So? I would be pissed at myself too lol. Hikaru really needed that win and got a draw, had a winning position and couldn't find it, it then turned into a draw
Hey Hikaru, I love that you look for insight while explaining your attack. I wish he was more reciprocal though learning your thought process is really interesting. Great matches!
Perhaps if hikaru played Kh1 before Bareev had a chance to play f5 he had chances but hard to calculate that race of doubling rooks and queen h6 opposed to the passed pawn on his left flank
I love watching Hikaru both before and after games. I'm sure he hates losing, but loves chess more. I wish him continued success. I truly believe he is responsible for an evolution of how chess is played.

This is a positional game with lots of feature details instead of g3 the Qh5 or Qg4 move and then Ng6!!. Instead of f4 the move Bxh6!. They are deep lines of asymmetric calculations or sacrificing one quality for the benefit of another quality in the short term. 🙄🤔

The knight shuffle in the 2nd game was very nice! Hikaru just patiently lured him in with what looked like some harmless knight moves.
I could see his idea as soon as he white played Qc3. I was wondering why Barreev didn't try to move the queen after Na7 giving the rook room.
