    The points about doing work that matters, is a very important one. Thanks for a very good video. I am personally transitioning into bioinformatics algorithm designer, primarily programming, and this way you gain more freedom around where you are located and who you can work with.

      Good to see you @rebelScience. You are a legend when it comes to bioinformatics on youtube. I am working as a web developer but i would like to transition into bioinformatics as well in order to do work that matters either on personalised medicine, or drug discovery. I do not know much bio but hopefully will get there step by step.

    I've never felt so understood. Currently in my final year of undergrad and really looking forward for next year doing Bioinformatics. I've been watching your channel religiously over the last few days and it has cleared up so much for me, I don't have many friends in science and those who are are never understand me when I say that there is more than just research careers. I know that this field has a very steep learning curve, i hope that you keep uploading videos so it'll be like a small cheat sheet for me when i start my career. 💯💯💯

    👍Thank you for sharing such a meaningful video on RUclips. I am a bachelor student in China, expecting to participate in bioinformatics. And I defenitely agree with your opinions in the video. While in industry you can earn a high pay working day in and day out, in academic you can do something that really matters like cancer genetics!!! I think that means a lot to me.

    Q: Is there a particular project that one must do at the master's level for building their profile while also learning through it? in other words, the project involves using skills that one is required to know in the industry, and doing this will also give some prior exposure to the kind of work so any suggestions for a bioinformatics project where we can apply our skills?

    I studied bioscience at undergrad and just sort of stumbled upon a career in data analysis and business intelligence, I've learned and used a couple of programming languages for a few years and now thinking of leaving a relatively high paying job to take on an apprenticeship in bioinformatics that offers a masters qualification at the end of it. Any support you can provide with regards to interview questions and things to look out for would be much appreciated. Would my qualifications and experience as a data analysis be enough? Thank you!

    Whats the difference between bioinformatics and biostatistics?

    • @collins5872
      @collins5872 Год назад +1

      Those were two different units under my biotechnology degree. Biostatistics is mostly math related and is all about statistical data where you collect them analyze them and you interpret them. On the other hand bioinformatics is mostly computer related and is mostly used in interpreting and understanding the biological data you have.

    • @tzvi7989
      @tzvi7989 Год назад

      In industry, biostatisticians generally work on clinical trial studies and stats - i.e. Kaplan-meier, chi² and mixed models. Bioinformaticians generally work with Omics data. There can obviously be overlap when hunting for biomarkers where you will integrate Kaplan-meier plots with your Omics analysis to weight biomarkers by prognostic value. Hope this helps

  • @tzvi7989
    @tzvi7989 Год назад

    9:02 i have to disagree with you as a bioinformatician in industry. Due to the nature of my work it can actually be a lot more varied than in academia as we have the samples to maximise statistical power of our analysis so we don't have to repeat things over and over or fudge our analysis to "maximise" a low sample size

    • @tzvi7989
      @tzvi7989 Год назад

      The other positive is you are much more likely to be around other more experienced bioinformaticians who can help you out if you get stuck and review your work properly

  • @mohammadal-qudah179

    I don't get why I need a phd in order to work in the industry. Isn't the whole point of having a phd/postdoc is to work in academia? Why are they competing with others that have a master's degree?

    • @BaseCalling
      @BaseCalling  2 года назад +1

      I think people find out how hard academia really is and then decide industry is just a better career move

    • @tzvi7989
      @tzvi7989 Год назад

      Marketing. That's why they generally only hire board members who have a PhD too ( they'll always say equivalent experience is fine too but always choose the candidate with the phd)

    Hello! I am currently pursuing bachelors in chemical engineering, about to start my 2nd year. I wanted to know whether I can apply for masters in bioinformatics? I plan on learning programming and dsa along with my degree, and do a bit of machine learning projects and do a data science course online. Also planning to take a biotechnoloy subject as my elective in 3rd year. Is it possible for me to get admitted in masters in this field then? Recently this field has looked interesting to me, I am wondering whether to make a career in it or not.
