Just picked up an old 40hp and it turns but not all the way by hand. will get a camera to hook up to my phone and check it out. I was looking for someone who knows what to do with an old new to me free motor to see if it's any good? Thanks for do this video. great into.
yup got a used 74 dual port with alternator, I bought it an estate sale, and the seller (twice removed said it ran when parked and it was pulled in the 80's) - but it was stuck. I bought it anyway. No spark plugs ! and bit of acorn everywhere....PB Blaster inside it, motor oil and turn the flywheel, it moved, so what ever had it stuck wasn't too bad.. removed valve covers too, and that was not as clean as yours, but clean, no water, no heavy sludge....think I have to subscribe !
@@RobStapleton do find that engines accumulate at your house ? I once had 12, got rid of them, and now, I have about that many again, and I have others in other locations !! I should have a engine shed to bring them in one place and let them go to new homes..going to build a 1776 with one of the 3 1600s I have here....cooked one just outside Buffalo, rod 2 through the case...
If you have no bore scope I have used a vacuum necked down to a small tube to clean each piston while turning motor over slowly by hand with all spark plugs removed..an empty shop vac.so you can see what if any thing was inside....better than taking a chance....
I have two fiberglass body dune buggies. My 67 is having problems with the clutch, the pedal goes to the floor now and the gears won't engage. I I have no way to remove the motor . I'm in Columbus Ohio and no one seems to know anything about them.

Hi. I’ve one wv kombi from 1973 and I’ve one problem in the engine that anyone can solve it. When I’m driving and I’ve to stop, for instance, in the traffic lights a lot of times the engine switch off. I completely restore the van and engine, but that problem persists. Do you have some tip for this issue?
How can i tell what size my engine is? The older gentleman i bought my 68 Bug from had another engine sitting in his garage for about 15-20 years that i just acquired due to him developing dementia. Before he forgot everything we had conversations and he stated it was a 1800 engine but im not sure on the size
I want to make sure i can get the right gaskets because of how long it has been sitting. I know it is a dual port, with a bigger than stock oil cooler and it has an alternator rather than a generator and various EMPI/Scat engine aesthetic modifications but inside the engine i have no idea.
The only way to really tell would be to partially take the engine apart and measure the bore and stroke...but most of the gaskets and seals should cross over to what ever you have.
@@RobStapleton i ended up popping the valve covers today and tried to hand crank it and the motor is completely rusted on the inside, as well as the lifters, luckily i didnt purchase the engine yet as i would have been out 400 dollars
@@RobStapleton i will just opt out to build my 1600 i have to a 1776 with the kit available that way i know what is going into my engine rather than trying to figure out
I’m trying to save an old 68 bug electric abomination I found sitting. Thinking of converting it back to gas if I can get it cheap. The batter are wasted and the motor is way too small.
@@RobStapleton... In an aircooled engine? I tried it twice in Nigeria while on visit and the engine would not run the compressor efficiently. Any tip please?

Nerve wracking music. Always squirt oil in the plug holes leave for a day before turning over. Same for any engine left for years on end.
