This is so old but this will always be my favorite Maddie solo. The emotion she managed to portray at age 9 is amazing, I remember tearing up the first time I saw this on tv. Even now, after all the crazy amount of dances she's done since this, nothing will ever top the heart she put into this one.

My favorite Maddie solo too. This choreography is much more advanced than what I've seen from her recently, her emotion is flawless. Wish she could do more solos like this. Can't believe she didn't win!
SassyWebkinz156 It kind of makes me sad that she doesn't get pieces like this anymore. Her solos now tend to be so easy and repetitive and not really that thought out anymore. If she could do this well at age 8, then I'm sure she's capable of doing mature pieces at age 13! I just wish her choreographers would agree haha

+totallyjamie I think this dance is amazing, but as a former competitive dancer the only thing I can think of this not winning for would be that the judges may have deemed it too "adult". Most competition handbooks state that they reserve the right to deduct points or disqualify an act if they deem it age-inappropriate.
I was literally just about to post this same comment haha this solo was very very good, and to think it lost to a musical theatre piece?... Very strange.

Maddie is actually only 8 years old in this video! The mini category is 8 and under and she was 8 for all of season 1 which is when this was competed! so amazing!

This is still one of my favorite dances. Her emotional execution is incredible, especially for such a young age, the costume is adorable and the choreography is amazing. I can't believe this didn't won first, it is hard to believe that a 9 yr old performed such a heavy theme.

I wish Maddie got choreography like this again. All she gets now is the same boring, pretty, lyrical routines that do NOTHING to showcase her raw talent. This dance had a story, and a meaning. But instead of challenging Maddie with this type of choreography again, Abby just gives Maddie what she knows Maddie will win with. It's just disappointing because Maddie is SO talented!
Have you seen her in Sia's new video? She's amazing. Being at ALDC and always doing pretty lyrical routines is going to hold her back from growing as a dancer.

The show makes Maddie seem like a one-trick pony a lot of times, but we can see from the jazz/tap/etc numbers and the Sia video that she's capable of so much. Don't get me wrong, her pretty lyrical dances are gorgeous (and season 4 has had some pretty unique ones so far), but I wish she was given a variety of routines to showcase her true potential (again s4 is doing better... so far). Tbh I'd love to see her move to NYC or the west coast, after the show is over, to an amazing studio - she would flourish, and so would Mackenzie!

maddie's old dancing back in season 1 is so underrated and doesn't get enough attention! especially this solo, most people only know cry and angel, all of which i love though.
I think it's because her technique wasn't great then, and her turns were good for her age but not the best. With regards to technique she improved a lot with age. But I guess it depends what people think makes a good dancer and dance because it's so subjective.
Maddie's improved with regards to technicality immensely since this solo, evidently enough, but this will perpetually remain as the number that made me fall in love and revere her as a dancer/artist. as a nine year old, it's difficult to grasp the graveness of the content of this dance's storyline, but she did it and she did it effortlessly. much love to you, Maddie; always.

Maddie is such an incredible talent. Her stage presence, emotion, and lyrical translation is impeccable. Even if her skill wasn't at the mastery level...I would STILL be drawn, magnetically, to her raw expression.

This solo is painfully underated
I lova this solo so so so much! Her emotions are just perfect here. I think this style of dances compements Maddie's talant the most. Abby defenetely should give her such dances again for her talant to be seen)

Hands down my favorite Maddie dance to this day. This is what made me fall in love w her dancing. The story was so real and she's so fluid, it's like the story effortlessly seams out of her. I want her to perform this solo again, I actually really loved the choreography a lot more than most of Abby's choreography
I think her solos from when she was younger had a lot more meaning then her solos she does now. They used to have actual stories in them and now they really don't anymore :/ I'm not saying she isn't a good dancer because she's amazing but I miss her old solos

I just realized why this is my favorite Maddie solo. It's not iconic like Cry, or sophisticated and beautiful like her new ones. In fact, her acting was so good that it felt less like a dance and more like a genuine representation of an abused little girl's suffering. It was raw and it makes me forget that she's acting or even dancing, I love the choreography because it presents her fear and confusion and innocence. Her technique doesn't make you gasp and think, "What a flowing, flawless dancer!" It's just... perfect in its own way. I love it, it stands out to me more than any of the other dances she's ever done.
Yeah she's improved a lot on her technique but the performance wise, she's always had it in her, she's amazing always has been always will be, wish Abby's choreography (still good) but find this dance a lot more advanced! But this is why I love Maddie!

She has reincarnated many times over as a dancer, in order to be so natural and expressive with her body. Which might as well be a moving Picasso.

LITERALLY how did she not win
Its 2020 now and I think that this was Maddie's best solo that she had ever performed on the show. The emotional factor and technique was perfect. I really think that this solo should of won.
Her heart was always something special. She doesn't have the technique but the way she portrays the emotions as though she herself is really feeling it really sets her apart. Can't wait for the even more amazing things she's gonna do in the future.
this solo is my favourite of maddie's, but it's hard to enjoy it fully as she was kicking herself inside to win and impress others as all the pressure was on her - this dance proved that she is an amazing dancer

FLAWLESS! I love watching Maddie dance. This is my favorite dance on the whole show ever! Maddie got 1st and she deserved it even though they said she got 2nd. Her and Chloe were in different age catagories,they both won.So all you haters on the girls(especially on Maddie and Chloe) better stop. All the girls are fabulous dancers. Only jealous people would hate on them.

as a dancer, i watched this ans speaking french. they were both amazing solos! very talented at their age. but i have to agree that this deserved 1st as it showed more technique and story and was stronger while the other appeared a bit bobbly
I love this solo. It has so much meaning and emotion, and its not just about spins and leaps (while it does have that). You can see the emotion in her dance so clearly and its just such an amazing and touching dance.

This dance is amazing. It gives me chills every time I watch it. Even though its from season 1 and its really old, its probably one of my favourite dances from dance moms so far.
I came back to see this years later, and wow! Just think that an 8 year old little girl was able to execute and dance beautifully to such a heavy piece.

My daughter has met Maddie a few times before Dance Moms and said she was very sweet and pleasant. She is obviously a great dancer but she really has/had a sweet personality to go with her talent.
It’s 2019 and this dance was preformed in 2012 and 7 years later it still makes me cry
I think this was the best song and choreography for Maddie, I am really shocked she didn't win... not to say its totally unbeatable idk who else competed against her but I think part of the reason she didn't win could be the message and what the dance was about might have been inappropriate and too much for her age...just my opinion!

The music, the dancing, the emotion, the hairstyle, the costume, just everything about this dance is amazing. I’m not a dance teacher, but I was a dancer for 5 years, but this should’ve won first or even maybe a perfect score.
Even though some of the other girls are very good, I still feel that Maddie is the most talented. She has an emotional connection with the audience and a passion more than anyone else I've ever seen... especially so young. I love watching her dance.

I just can't get over the maturity in her dancing! Her lines are so clean and you can tell she really loves what she's doing.
I find it amazing that these little girls who have been dancing for most of their lives have the same or better alignment than professional dancers. they're so flexible, and they've trained their muscles at such an early age. I just hope that when they grow up, they'll continue their career as a dancer and grow and grow in their maturity as a dancer. Some of these girls start out soo good! I can't wait for what the future holds for them!
