August, I have done this so many times, to many to count, when I was still doing landscape work. I would always kick my own butt. I would look at the job and think I was Superman and the job ended up taking way longer then I thought. I totally feel your pain.
That homeower is going to be so happy they received such a great value .....they will tell all their friends. and that will bring more jobs... Its like getting free advertising.... Great job and stay safe..
@@AugustHunicke yup. For every job you underbid, you have 5 excited referrals anticipating your great services at a "fair price". Lord I cringe when I see those come in haha. Don't fire yourself. Just bid it so that you're smiling while doing the work!

It ain't nuthin but trucks, saws, and labor man. Dang ol' backwards cash flow man! Ha ha! Back in the late 80s, there was a 90+ year old woman in our little community who was known for being tight with money. She would let her yard get up really tall because nobody wanted to mow it for a quarter. Seriously, 25 cents. Once a local farmer got in there with a tractor and bush hog just to knock down the wild yard next to some of his kin for free. She had money, everyone knew it. We mowed the neighboring yard of the church and school...she told us we could just run those machines right around the fence and mow hers real quick...she said she couldn't afford to pay us, but she was sure we would be glad to get the work😂 No thank you!
Enjoyed the video. Whew! Quite a job. I've cut myself short in the past. So many "cheap" so called "tree services" out there. Everybody thinks they can work on trees. Anyone can buy a chainsaw and spurs and harness, etc.....but they can't buy the smarts to go with them. I've "cleaned up" a few jobs for customers after a shyster left them high and dry. I'm sure you were mad/sad all the day at having underbid the job. A good job is coming round the bend. Thanks for sharing.
Try the 2000 bucks per day and 1000 for half a day? That's based on what another tree company does. They didn't mention a thousand for half a day though. They have a tall bucket truck, chipper and chipper truck so can really get stuff done and get it gone.
Sound like you need to get a job for a real tree company till you learn what this work is actually worth. Under bidding is an epidemic and horrible for the industry
You can't win them all. You helped the Homeowner, and your helping your Niece. You did a good Deed. With the Crane ,and everything else you had to do that was cheap. Gods going to Bless you for all those times you stuck your neck out.
I haven’t watched this video yet but just ready the title and MAN I underbidded a job yesterday , i charged $150 for a leaf clean up and that shyt turned out to be like $400 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 MAN
Don't feel bad i think we all do it sometimes or another i just did one that i bid on when i was cold outside and really needed the work and now im really busy and they called me to do it
$1500 does seem very cheep. At one time, I would have thought it was a good pay day, but considering all of your equipment, and the crew it's not enough; unless maybe you can finish the job in an hour or two.
Win some lose some. Learn from mistakes and move forward, try not to let it happen again. I believe too strong of a desire to land jobs leads to underbidding. I've made that mistake many times. I did a job early on for 1/3 of the price it should have been. I did another job where the guy was like "Wow you're way cheaper than the last guy." I knew then I had underbid it. My goal is to get to where I don't worry about finding work, it finds me, and I bid it properly because I'm not worried about getting it.
Interested on why it was bid so cheap? Is everyone as broke as people are here in California also in Oregon ? I’d say $2500 would be in the low end here. But overall great work bud
The market for tree work is terrible right now. Too many tree companies in every area and they’re all fighting to survive driving down prices. Better start planting trees, at this rate, in 20 years the industry will be done…every fighting to remove the last few declining trees.
I am a terrible estimator. I have the best estimator, he is fair in every way but understands that the business needs to make money. I think Evan would make a really good estimator, send him on some bids and pay him 10% commission. PS, I would have bid it for $1500 too but I bet my estimator would have gotten about $2500 so pretty big difference.
Looks like a dead spruce across the street from that job. Maybe, they will call you after they find out how great of a price there neighbors got. Look at it this way, at least you got to do something you love doing that had some payback; maybe even cost you less than a full tank of fuel for the airplane 😏. See you on the next video.
I didn’t make V cuts here. They were more shelf cuts. First cut on the binding side to make room for the tree to travel away from the pinch on the second cut.
I got a crane job scheduled next week for big co dom Fir over house .. my crane guy is charging 2200$ for crane and climber .. I’ll prob charge around 2 grand to clean and remove logs and debris ..
I don't know, I paid $1500 for work on 3 Maple trees / no clean up. they took out the overhanging wood over the garage on 2 the 3rd was a tri dominate and they brought it down completely leaving 20 foot trunks on all 3 trees serviced. No crane, 2 guy's in a bucket truck. He told me it would have been $3500 if they cleaned up.
I myself often underbid. But I keep wondering why treeworkers as far as I know, give bids? Why not work by the hour? In my country you can’t get a carpenter, mechanic, electrician, hairdresser to give you a bid. It’s always by the hour. What do we need to do to change this?
I'm seeing a trend where I live, small-town area. If I don't under bid the job, I don't get it. Definitely has something to do with people being broke these days, I guess sometimes I would rather make a little than nothing
When using the zig zag in an MRS setup on a spar you should run your climb line through a friction saver. The friction saver will cinch down on the spar so that you can descend down the spar if need be. Without the friction saver, your climb line could slide down the spar as you descend.

Might be good advertising too!
Under cut tree service has a good ring to it🤣
With the 900 other tree services that popped up in my area I am pretty sure underbidding is the only way to get the job now😂
Nice to know even the best tree guys underbid still. Every time I do that I tell myself it’s the last time but inevitably I’ll blunder again…

$1500 looks right as long as you also add a charge of a thousand a day for the crane.

And $50 a ton for disposal lol

the dose makes the poison
