    We fiddled with the Bobby pin for a while and got fed up, wound up drilling with the tumbler in, very slowly and very carefully, tapped it with the screw until tumbler was tight enough, marked screw off with tape to show depth, cut screw and screwed it in. Had to remove the red part and mess with the shaft to make sure there was 3 clicks on the key but it worked. Also wrapped the security ring wires with electrical tape to protect them from the screw. I know strongly not recommended to do it this way but worked for us.

      This is currently happening to my 01 540i. I already drilled the spring out as my wheel locked. Replaced the ignition switch, new battery and when I put the key in I get no power to cluster. Will probably try this and hope it works because the key does spin freely like that.

  • @FineW_TurboM111

    I didnt manage to take it out, so I put the key in the same position as you had it and drilled with a self tapper and just gently screwed it in until I got resistance from the barrel, then I tried turning the key and it wouldnt spin the barrel anymore, so I took the self tapper and snipped it off and screwed the rest of it in so it gently held it in place. Worked wonders except I fucked up and killed the antenna ring while removing it.

    I can start my car by putting the key in the lock, so the immobiliser recognizes properly, and turning the electrical module. What I cannot do is turn the key at all - it''s stuck at second (RUN) position, and because of that I cannot take out the lock.

    BMW designed the key cylinder to do this on purpose. The idea is if you take the wrong key (or are a thief with a screwdriver) the tab breaks off when forced and the cylinder will spin around and around without disabling steering lock or turning on ignition. Smart if you think about it for preventing thieves, real pain in the butt if your key doesnt work anymore. I found this out by accidentally using the wrong key on my E38.

    the bobby pin fix is easier if you place the pin as far as you can then turn it upwards and push a bit more in and then turn it down.
    After I figured this out it was easy to remove. Issue I have is after replacing the tumbler with a new tumbler (not interested in drilling the case) My key is still spinning in the new tumbler. What did I miss?
    Thanks

    • @BustamiAuto
      @BustamiAuto  3 года назад

      The new tumbler must have a pin from the side that forbids it to spin. If that small pin is broken it will soon and you'll have to drill a small screw. Good luck 🌹

    • @lindajohnson4429
      @lindajohnson4429 3 года назад

      @@BustamiAuto Thank you in advance for your quick response and I hope I can ask you another question....
      IF I understand the term "spinning" when the key is inserted it will turn 360 degrees.
      IF this is correct, then that is not my issue.
      My issue is that I have a car that when the key is out of the ignition, the steering wheel is locked and the car is off. When I insert the key, the first turn releases the steering lock and the door open signal bings, but then the key smoothly turns to the stop position with out pausing at the acc position, and with out starting the car. No dashboard lights come on and there is no resistance at all on the key.
      I ordered a new tumbler from BMW and replaced it, this did not change my issue.
      I think that it may be the shaft that runs from the key to the ignition may be broken, but then would the steering lock still function? The other thought is that it may be a simple blown fuse.
      I live in the middle of nowhere and I would have to tow my car over 100 miles to a dealership where I have no confidence or experience with the mechanics so I am hoping I can resolve the issue or at least understand the issue before sending it so far away.
      I would appreciate any input you may have on this matter.

      Thanks so much
      Linda

    • @BustamiAuto
      @BustamiAuto  3 года назад

      @@lindajohnson4429 no probs. If the key set normally and moves normally to right positions, but sometimes you don't get dashboard lights, then it means one of your reasons : 1-main fuse. 2- ignition switch out cord.
      Test both and your car should be in street soon :) best of luck
