    Looking way way back, this was one of the earliest, if not the first video i can vividly remember watching in RUclips. My Psx was long gone, but this serves as a lasting memory of owning one. Congratulations on 100k subs John!

      Before the actual PSX, the PS1 was originally referred to as Playstation X or PSX as it's codename before officially launching. That name must've stuck for some people to still refer to it by that old name.

    The second game is "the Convenience Store"- a simulation of running one.
    As for the game you loaded, it first tells you to "please wait a while for the game to load". Your'e then getting error messages for not having a proper ps2 memory card- need more than 1996 kb or it might not save properly. The next screen asks if you want do another another check for ps2 memory card with the options:
    retry
    cancel
    Can't read all of the last screen, but something complex about auto-saving and where to go in the options.

    Really nice looking system. I remember when it came out, and it was a pretty penny. I saw a few in the junk section of various resale stores in Japan a few years ago going for about 5000yen. I was tempted to bite; but without having the knowhow to fix it, I passed. Definitely ahead of its time.

    • @barebarekun161
      @barebarekun161 6 лет назад

      Junk did not necessarily mean non working electronics in Japan it can just be a perfectly working item that they threw it away for cash or moving out or an item that missing some cosmetic pieces like flaps or package box and that's enough to be qualified an item as "Junk"
      I bought a Boxed Neo Geo CD for $42 from Hard Off junk section and it worked perfectly the console controllers power and AV cables are in great condition far from the "Junk" condition they advertised,the only thing looked a bit junked was the package box.
      50/50 chance you'll get stupidly good deals of working items or just a straight up junk that need to be repair.

      How is this exactly a bad idea? We don't switch out memory cards for the most part, if we had to have 2 slots in the back it'd make sense to keep the memory cards safely concealed in the back at the system and it wouldn't be too bad since we barely switch those things out.

    5:44 I think that is a D-Terminal connection. It was a video connection used in Japan before HDMI.

    • @GenuflectingRotation
      @GenuflectingRotation 9 лет назад

      +MrApplewine
      Correct. D-Terminal is actually an Apple Attachment Unit Interface (AAUI) re-purposed as a 1080i component/digital video interface with an approximate bit-rate of 10 megabits per second for Japanese media playback devices and other consumer electronics. Unlike HDMI (which barely looks similar), D-Terminal does not support audio, and its connector resembles a cross between an IEEE-1394 and a D-Subminiature (both of which were heavily used by Apple Inc. on their early computers and peripherals).

    • @MrApplewine
      @MrApplewine 9 лет назад

      +Wal Dengs I made a D-terminal to vga cable back in the days of the gamecube in order to get vga out of my gamecube.

    • @GenuflectingRotation
      @GenuflectingRotation 9 лет назад

      +MrApplewine
      Aside from the 1-pin difference between the two (VGA having 15th pin used for PC DDC data), they're practically identical.
      Did you crimp the connectors yourself, or did you splice together the wires of two separate pre-assembled cables?
      More importantly, why not just get a simple male-to-male D-Terminal to VGA adapter instead?

    • @MrApplewine
      @MrApplewine 9 лет назад

      +Wal Dengus I modified the chip in the D-terminal to component cable to output RGB and then attached a d-sub vga plug on the end. I soldered the wires to the vga d-sub. I don't think there was a d-terminal to VGA adapter.

    This is the epitome of Sony's logic back then. Make huge feats of technologic advancements that almost no one will want to be buy due to price. Im almost sad they stopped doing these kinds of consumer electronics. It was far more hilarious looking at things like the PSX and PS3 launch then the conservative direction they went in with PS4.

    Each IO port is actually labeled under the system. That's a VGA port that he was not sure about. Very standard port.

    • @MrRobarino
      @MrRobarino 8 лет назад

      +Bryan Emery. Wrong. That is NOT a standard VGA port. It's labeled Digital I/O expansion and is a non-standard Sub-D port. It's physically smaller then a standard VGA port and has a completely different pin configuration. It was never used by any peripheral. Also, all the port labels on his unit are in Japanese so it's understandable he had trouble reading them.
      If you need proof, there are several people on e-bay selling PSX units and several have close-up photos of the back ports. You can clearly tell it's not a VGA port.

    The controller ports are in the back so the cords won't be dangling in the front. It prevents some from walking into the controller cord and pulling the PSX off of where it's sitting. DS2 cords are kinda long enough anyway so I don't think it would matter that much.

    For the people who couldn't understand this incredibly vague post, the Playstation's code name while being developed was called Playstation Experimental, which was often abbreviated to PSX. Its official name was announced, however for some odd reason countries outside of Japan had a stupid fascination with continuing its original nick-name.

    The PlayStation was always called the PSX, from it's inception. Sony refers to the PS as PSX throughout the developer documentation and libraries.
    "A flexible and powerful operating system is part of the PS-X." -from official Sony PS1 SDK OS manual
    PSXart, PSXgraph, PSX, PSXsound - default folder names in official SDK.
    ccPSX.exe - Official Sony-supplied 'C' compiler
    asmPSX.exe - Official Sony-supplied assembler
    PSXICON.ICO - default icon filename
    C:\PSX - default SDK install folder
    etc...

    When the PlayStation 1 originally debuted, there were abbreviations for all the consoles, and many retailers and publishers would use the abbreviation PSX to stand for the PlayStation. PS was used in other contexts, including the PostScript printer language, commonly used in laser printers, and probably is trademarked. After the PSX was released, people stopped using the PSX abbreviation, and started using PlayStation One, unofficially having a number in the title, and being abbreviated PS1.

    @MyShadow2424 I found two on ebay just now, one working for $450 + $180 for shipping (searched Japan PSX System). The other, doesn't work and it's $60 + $145 shipping (searched Japan PSX). It says the one that doesn't work, won't read discs. So I'm thinking maybe the DVR still works?

    They seemed to have had thought of everything apart from the controller ports location and from what you say the fact that it over heats easily.

    This PSX kind of reminds me of Apple's design language in the early to mid 2000s when they had the iMac G4, G5, early Core 2 Duo, late iBook G3s and iBook G4 systems because they're all glossy white too.

    It is interesting when I was looking at the region rating on the back of the machine, it might be able to also play games bought from Hong Kong since it says NTSC-J.

    Would a cooling fan help extend the life of and cool down the PSX? Or would the PSX still overheat within a couple non-interrupted hours?

    @CWCandMRSAFETYRULES You had an earlier model then. The PS1 did have analog sticks about half way in it's life. There are 3 models of Playstation(each with a different controller). The launch playstation didn't have any analog sticks, the second major revision had the "Dual Analog" controller(slightly different, no shock and the sticks sink in like the 360's analog sticks), and the last major revision was "Dual Shock"(It said Dual Shock right on the box). If you don't believe me, research it.

    @zexx you are correct, the original PlayStation was not given a number officially but the small later model IS called "PSone", i just meant that PS1 is a widely accepted term for the original PlayStation.
    I wouldn't call the PSone the successor to the PlayStation 2 though it was released after the PlayStation 2 as it was still just a PlayStation and not a new console.

    I read that you can uses this in conjunction with a LocationFree base station and actually play PS2 titles on your PSP without any issues (in addition to watching TV/DVD, etc). Do you happen to have a LocationFree base station that you could test this out with to verify? I was just curious... It may be useful knowledge for those who want to get a hold of one. Too bad there was no US version (wonder if it can be modded)...

    @TheGamingPegasus187 Controllerports at the back gives it a cleaner look. Especially when you're using wireless controllers, there is no need to have the ports on the front.

    Winning Eleven is the Japanese name for the Pro Evolution Soccer series.
    One thing I am wondering about though. The screen says Playstation 2 when you are loading the game and I noticed all the games you showed had the Playstation 2 name on the covers. Does that mean that the system is compatible with all PS2 games? Or is it only compatible with the ones that you showed in the video? If it's compatible with all PS2 games it would be a great system as long as it works.

    Only thing you said wrong was back in 2003, the yen 100 = to about $1. I was a buyer and seller of products directly from Japan back then. I wanted one of these in 2005, but I was told the PS3 would be similar. This was supposed to be an adult system. Sort of a one stop shop for those who had a nice home theater system. For me I would rather get the Debug PSX unit, and maybe a PS2 test unit because I have many PAL and Japanese games for both systems.
