queer partner dancing like this is not the most common thing in the ballroom dance scene, but its also not unheard of and there are competitions far this specific kind of partnering

Yeah, except they're not a couple, not in love, they aren't both leading, and at least one of them is -- likely to the dismay of gay men everywhere -- "openly straight." But apart from that, yeah, totally on-point. LOL.

You know it's validating in a way, being a gay male myself, seeing the internalized homophobia/discomfort of the other contestants as this couple dances. I imagine all of them are really kind, good people, and look at how uncomfortable they become when he moves his body in certain ways that "men aren't supposed to," when the "feminized" sensuality is present in him. They cover their faces and look down, multiple of them, multiple times. Watch the other videos of the same contestants when the female dancers do the same types of moves, and none of them look down or cover their mouths or laugh uncomfortably. I don't blame any of them--heterosexism is ingrained in all of us--and I actually find it strangely validating for subtle versions of it like this to be so clear, even in a competition that likely feels (and is) progressive for letting two guys be in and participate, cheering them on. And I think that is great. Hopefully over time, these instincts to feel uncomfortable around a male body moving and being in these ways will get massaged out of all of us. It was interesting that it was mostly in the women too.

@@hustler212 I don't know if you have ever heard of a psychological-therapeutic model called the Minority Identity Development Model, but I found it super helpful in understanding myself a long time ago. An actual *inversion of the value system that was oppressively placed on us. Folks in stage 3 feel like our own minority identity (queer in this instance) is *better than the dominant identity. It helps us build self-worth we have needed, helps us cope with the onslaught of messages around us telling us we are inferior or don't belong. In this stage, we often separate from the dominant group, come up with names for them (like breeders), etc. One of the reasons I find it so helpful as a model is it is counter intuitive morally. So many people think we should always be kind/nice/empathetic/humble/inclusive. But in stage 3 people are usually angry/self-focused/exclusive/arrogant. And that's actually really good! It helped me see that we need to be different things at different times to develop well, to protect ourselves, to have self-worth. Those who are a part of any marginalized group need this kind of anger. I'm glad you have it, even as I'm so sorry we even need it in the first place.
@Gabriel Prescott I hear that. And I think it makes a lot of sense. I guess I always feel torn between this perspective you named here and the one I vocalized. What they are doing *is harmful, and is not behavior we should normalize or accept. I agree with you. But at least with where I am at present in my life, I find really moralizing language to make it harder for people to change (even if it's true). In conversations around marginalized groups like queer people, I think, even though it's wrong, it's helpful for us to learn to talk about it in ways that make it acceptable to discover an -ism in your own thoughts and feelings. A kind of, "Of course I have these kinds of thoughts and feelings. Our culture and sub-cultures are so sexist, racist, classist, ableist, etc." I want people to be able to see those thoughts and feelings (myself included) and work on them, not be so defensive and scared that they never can. That said, I know marginalized groups often deeply need to scream, we need to condemn them, for our own sanity's sake, for our own self-worth's sake. And, from a moral view, I do think what they are doing is wrong and harmful. So I feel torn by that. Thank your thoughtful and honest comment. It's a good balance to the one I wrote, and maybe even a good correction to it. I don't think it's cynical at all.
