- In 1984, 18-year-old Sarah Scantlin was run over by a drunk driver. The severe brain injuries left her in a coma for twenty years. Doctors had to remove the part of her brain that governs speech to save her life. The prognosis was that she would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, with feeding tubes to keep her alive. In 2005, Sarah miraculously woke up in the nursing home where she lay for two decades and began to speak. She asked the nurse for a manicure.
No-one has ever been in a coma for that long and regained the power of speech. The film meets Sarah two years after she spoke those first words. Now, she wants to prove once more she can achieve the impossible. Sarah’s goal is independence. To feed herself, and be able to stand and walk unassisted. The film follows her rapid progress and her family’s struggle to finance further intensive rehab for her after already losing everything they had on medical bills.
Sarah’s loved ones also come to terms with the guilt, sacrifice, and loss that they suffered over those years that Sarah ‘disappeared’. The film explores how Sarah’s brain rewired itself and how there is much more going on in the brains of coma victims than anyone ever thought possible.

When I was 18 I was briefly in a coma, and even when someone can't respond, we sometimes DO hear things and feel things, and I believe her friend's visits are a huge part of how she was able to eventually wake up. Like a lifeline in the ocean on a moonless night. . . helping to guide her back to consciousness.

I am a traumatic brain injury (TBI) patient. I was in a coma in 97 for 4 day ataxia on the right side, deafness in the right ear as well as loosing 1 kidney. I was supposed to be a couch potato the rest of my life. Now being 29 I run a business married and have a kid. Life works in mysterious ways.

I think the nursing home deserves credit for apparently taking good care of her all those years.
If they did their job then yes. But at the same time they are getting paid. Even if they did try their best which is really rare for some employees unless if they actually like the profession and take their job seriously...the parents paid who knows how much money in order to keep her alive. In reality if the nurses weren't paid they wouldn't work for free would they? It's not fair that they had to pay that much. There should be a law stating that healthcare should be free for all because they went through a lot of grief and in this case the parents went above and beyond to take care of her, its not like they just left her to the medical staff.

When a person is not able to move on their own and bed bound they will have SEVERE skin breakdown of not properly cared for . I'm a nurse and cared for a quadriplegic, he couldn't do anything on his own. He had horrible skin breakdown on his backside and caused infection and sepsis. By the time I got to him he was already too far gone with infection from the bedsores all bc people didnt change his body positions ...something that takes little effort ... So your entire statement is completely false. She clearly had great care . Educate yourself before belittling someone.
It is unfortunate that so very many nursing homes don’t give that level of respect to conscious patients!
Also her skin is very beautiful, her face is virtually flawless.
Those parents sold their house and basically everything to keep their daughter alive, my Father was in a Coma for only 4 months before he passed away and our bill was around 800,000. We absolutely need to do something to change things like that, these people shouldn’t be in a trailer park home.

I must say, having worked in a nursing home and caring for a comatose female and a catatonic female it is truly a testament to the level of care she received to be so healthy, teeth still in her head, skin glowing. Bedridden people easily end up with bed sores and even avoiding that it requires such effort to maintain a body to the level of freshness she presents and to do so for 22 years is dedication and vigilance. I am awestruck and wondering why I hadn't heard about her.
What is the difference between being comatose and being catatonic?
@@DonnaBrooks similar states but catatonic patients are conscious and have neural reflex but not always responsive like verbally or ambulatory and comatose has loss of consciousness and neural reflexes. Catatonia has various causes and several types. It is a psychomotor disorder so the ability for normal movement is effected. Most often no movement but hyperkinetic catatonia presents with agitated movements and self harm sometimes. The lady I cared for had this type and would claw at her arms until they would bleed and consequently was kept with mittens on to keep her safe. Catatonia is often misdiagnosed as comatose.
The loving care she received for 20 years keep her alive. God was watching her all this years for the doctors to see that miracles happen.
But sadly today they want to disconnect the patients shortly after they are in coma and doctors tell their relatives that there is no hope and that they will never

Sarah died in 2016, few weeks after her 50th birthday. She died of respiratory issues and failing blood pressure.
I think people should stop asking why and criticizing her parents for holding onto her for all the 20 years she’s been in coma. I mean who are we to judge, she seemed really happy when she woke up. We all have different outlooks in life and judging from the video above, despite her condition she seemed grateful for that another chance in life.

Thats sad. The video showed that she was screaming the first 3 months she woke up tho. It was after that she started to talk and improve. I dont think screaming is happy.

I used to take care of her when I lived in Hutchinson , KS. It was in 2001 before she woke up. The part about the screaming was true. She would go on a screaming tangent for hours sometimes and kick her feet wildly. She wasn't hooked up to machines, only a feeding tube to keep her going. We used to play Reba on her cd player and talk to her when we did her range of motion exercise. It's odd that I found this video today, and after reading comments, I'm sad that she passed away. Her parents were very involved in her life which is why I think she came to. Even if her quality of life would never be the same, she still defeated the odds! 20 years! Amazing. And all the years I've done nursing, i've NEVER seen anything like that in my life. God bless Sarah and her family
*Her screaming and kicking was probably her desire to wake up...meaning...she was probably awake inside...Lately some medicines are available to bring a patient out from a comatose state(Zolpidem)...(electrical stimulation and cbd should also be considered)We have to be real careful...very often "they" will put you in an induced coma state without being really necessary...in order to increa$e your medical *treatment"...then...they can´t bring you back properly...aside from many side effects...Anyway...the present case was probably a totally different situation...We should practice simple approaches as much as possible...and with less invasive procedures...and shorter stay in hospitals...(Also, hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an alternative to brain improvement etc...)* ruclips.net/video/4Q2vjnhGbpI/видео.html
Mellisa Moore very sad, thank you for caring for here. I was very ill with a fever of 106.9 Full blown AIDS and TB in my blood, skin, lungs. I was out for about a week had several NDE's (NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE) I woke thankful without brain damage. But, I see life in a new light, what I experienced though only bits and pieces was amazing. God is all loving.

On 6-23-2013 I was in a very similar accident myself, was legally pronounced dead and was in a coma for 6 months, I shattered my skull and had to have two brain surgeries.. thanks to God we’re both still here! 👍🏻

I'm a grown man. And I'm not really emotional. But this made me teary eyed. I can't imagine what he was feeling. He was fighting his tears with every bit he had. A definition of a true man.

I was in a coma for a while when I was 18, but I can't imagine if it had been 20 years! I do want to say -- please everyone, always assume the person can hear you even when they can't respond. Because sometimes we can. Not everything, and sometimes we may not remember exactly the words; but the feeling -- knowing people care about you -- that comes through. I'm convinced it's a huge part of why she eventually was able to wake up.
I’ve never been in a coma but I believe you are correct… Just because people don’t move doesn’t mean they don’t sense. We have no idea what people are thinking just because they can’t tell us.. I think it’s extremely important to be very kind & mentally emotionally encouraging & also realise to be patient in cognitive function processing… it requires a huge amount of energy. I am quite sure this is what the rest helps with , it’s severe trauma & mass cellular healing I would think.
I think it's awful that Sarah's parents have been struggling financially all those years. I would have ordered the drunk driver to pay the medical bills.

My sister was run over by a drunk driver when she was being crossed over the road from high school by a lolly pop lady..In England lolly pop ladies were officials who stopped traffic so children could cross safely. She was brain damaged and in a coma for a month. Her recovery was brutal and she was changed forever. Today she would appear normal to a stranger but to us she is a different person. The drunk driver was coming home from his daughters wedding and so I feel sorry for that side of their family too. Everybody lost out and there was no winners. I used to walk home with my sister from school everyday but was held back at school for one hr that day. The guilt was terrible that I was not also injured and wasn't there when the tragedy happened.

My brother died at age nine, when I was eleven. He had a freak accident happen at a church kid's camp, when a basketball struck his head, causing a seizure. He was airlifted to a hospital where he was put on life support. Eventually, after a night's stay at the hospital, while in a waiting room, I heard the doctors tell my parents that if my brother was kept on life support, he'd be in a vegetative state. I heard them agree and I couldn't believe it. When I went to see him right after he was taken off the life support, I touched his hand which was icy cold to the touch. He had a single tear in the corner of his eye. I was pretty upset at my parents and became very depressed and heartbroken.

My sister was in a coma for four months and woke up. Miracles do happen. Since that happened to me a close friend had fallen in a coma and the doctors were pushing the family to let him go, I spoke up and said give it some time, people do wake up. The close family listened and held off. My friend woke up after a month and came back 95% and only had a slight limp for awhile afterwards. He reminds people all the time that I saved his life.

I was in a coma for three weeks in October/November 2021-I was life-flighted to a trauma center because the local hospital said, “no thank you.” It was a super rare reaction to a chemo drug I was taking. On October 30, they told my parents I had a 99.9% of never waking up and if I did, I would never leave the hospital. I woke up on my birthday, November 7. I remember days of my legs being too tight to stand up, having to learn to walk, talk, and eat again. The most challenging time of my life. I visited the hospital and the head neurologist say: “there is no medical explanation for why you’re standing in front of me right now.” Now I’m riding horses, and have so much more to prove.

I had a patient who was never supposed to come out of his coma, one morning I went in and said good morning he said hello! I told him who I was and where he was then I went to the nurse's station and told them to get the Dr. that this person was awake and talking.

Screaming was probably the easiest thing to do after reorganising so much of the brain. It's also the first thing a newborn does. The simplest, most direct way of communication that gets attention. And it worked. After that is was probably more about relearning how to use the new speech center.
Her parents loved her so much that they gave up everything for her. That's true love. Her pal also never have up on her.

Remember, in her mind, she's still a teenager, so while that was funny to us and to Lorrie (sp?), it probably wasn't a conscious joke to Sarah. She was probably just sharing her confusion about why Lorrie looks "old".

Very True. Actually I had a friend who just got angry with me because I was in lot of problems... Mostly family stuff. Money prob, n mom had cancer.... some stuff I don't like to talk about. And I was sleeping when she called me. So I told her I'm tired. Then she was like so you don't want to talk?.

Is it messed up that the first thing I thought of when I started watching this was “Wow I bet that hospital bill was outrageous”. America’s healthcare system has got to change! 😪
It's true but look at the UK. Here we pride ourselves on our free NHS - National Health Service - which is a blessing in many ways but in the same circumstances as Sarah the doctors would have forcibly turned the machines off. Parents of very sick children do not get to be part of the decision, the doctors feel the need of a hospital bed outweighs parental choice in the matter. I would rather sell everything I own to keep my kid alive than be left at the mercy of the doctors' decision.
I am in the US too and my mind did the same thing. My daughter had heart surgery as an infant. The bill I received was out of this world.

That friend of hers is one in a million. I can't imagine that there are many people who would regularly visit someone who's in coma for 20 years. My guess is most would give up after a few weeks, and that's only if they cared enough to visit at all. Most wouldn't even do that. That's true love and dedication. We should all strive to be more like her.

My first thought was, " How many of my friends would visit me for so long a time if something similar happened to me?" I had a traumatic brain injury and even then it was 'interesting ' as to who kept in touch and how many just quietly walked away after a couple of months. I'm very happy that she had that special friend there the whole time.

She got 11 more years with her parents, and her father passed away a few months before she did, so he didn't have to see her die. Her mom lived for two years and three months after her, and passed away at 78. She lived a good long life and didn't have to live long without her daughter.
Her friend! Wow, alot of people ghosted me after I had a few bad health years. I can't picture many staying by my side for that long knowing they weren't getting anything back from me.
I know what you mean. I've been Ill for 3years and unable to leave the house. You really find out who your friends are. Once I wasn't useful anymore, everyone except for my best friend and my son completely disappeared.

I come from a huge family of cousins who weren't impressed that I moved to Alaska so they, PLUS my friends, JUST FLAT IGNORED ME! THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE PRICIE to stay in touch with me... it wasn't, just the hours. Then Dr's found a Brain Tumor SO I went I went to Seattle for Surgery... no one came. So when we got home my family wanted to know why I went "home" (ALASKA) instead of "home" were they lived? ODD!
I stayed in Alaska for 15 full years & THEN I NEEDED TO GO BACK TO THE LOWER 48 & they put me in an OLD HOMES PLACE literally! And ELAINE SMITH my SON hasn't spock to me, wrote, called either! I will pray for you BOTH & God spead!! ❤🕊❤

The quality of a person's life depends on their attitude. Two men were asked to dig out 8 feet of dirt all the way around the perimeter of a certain acreage. The first man became frustrated and disheartened. He made the comment, "stop your cheerful whistling! I'm on the brink of giving up. We're in the middle of the heat of summer and facing the grueling task of digging this massive ditch. What is there to whistle about?" The second man said, "how is it that you are not whistling while you work? We're building a hospital where many lives will be saved." Did you notice the difference in the two men. They were involved in the same task under the same conditions but they coped differently because they had different attitudes.

@Mary T.. A father and a dad are not necessarily the same thing. Many men have fathered children but refuse to step up to the plate and be a dad. I have had many children and adolescents call me dad, even after explaining their dad might take offence to them calling me dad. They reply, you are more of a dad than my father will ever be. That being said, if you want a father figure present in your life, open yourself to the possibility of a surrogate. There may even be someone in your life already that treats you as their daughter. The creator of existence is father and mother for that matter, unless you have denied that connection. I know the reference is father, but it is not one gender or the other, nor is it both, but the knowledge and ability of both in regards to attributes. I hope you know what I mean.

My daughter sustained horrific brain damage in the first weeks of life from a strange medical condition; she was supposed to have died, but stayed with us. Life support was lifted (breathing devices), but she was with us for another 18 years. During this time, it was apparent that she would not understand beyond the reasoning of a toddler, but she was loved and happy for most of this time. Toward the end, she had terrible seizures and reduced quality of life, before she peacefully left us in her sleep one night.
For the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone could say anything negative about how this family dealt with what was going on with their daughter. Unless you live through such a thing, keep your negative thoughts to yourself. I take that back: even if you HAVE gone through a similar experience, it's not your place to give negative responses about this family.

These hospitals want to charge 500,000$ to be rushed to the hospital and do an electro shock treatment on a stroke patient for a single visit but imagine how much they are gonna charge for 20 years of hospital stay. What a man. Her dad is so positive and so quick to catch his emotions and might I add he's plan slick with how he handles 'em. Just reminds me of how lucky I am to also have such a loving and devoted Daddy. I hope all men try to cherish their babies forever like he is.
This is one of the best love stories I’ve ever watched! Her parents and her best friend is the embodiment of what true love is.. this is a real miracle & defied all scientific explanation. So sad to know that the whole family has already passed away. But now they are in a better place. No more hurt, no more pain. May they all rest in peace.

Sarah had some amazing people in her life. I just loved her Dad; the kind of Dad that all kids deserve to have... I'm not happy that he passed away, but was happy that he didn't have to be here to lose his daughter twice. Did anyone else notice how much Sarah looked like him? Her best friend really was the best... I do hope she's managed to let go of the guilt she had as there was never any reason for her to feel guilty, but we sometimes do anyways. Sarah, the shining star of this story was so determined and feisty, along with a personality with a good sense of humour. May you all R.I.P.

First of all, you can't "pull the plug" on someone who is in a coma. You can only do that for someone who is brain dead. People need to stop criticizing her parents for "keeping her alive". You still have a chance to recover from a coma. That's very rarely the case for brain death.

Brain death is a legal construct made to circumvent the dead donor rule (you can't take donated organs from someone who isn't dead, yet when someone is ACTUALLY dead they are decomposing too rapidly to use). Look it up, it's not a conspiracy theory or anything it's in medical papers, on wikipedia, etc.

I have been a nurse for 22 years and this is not unusual anymore, people do come out of comas after decades all the time, her having seized up is the hospital staff not doing proper range of motion exercises several times a day because they had no idea back then that a person might one day wake up

I wondered about that. Is it different now in 2019? How is it determined who gets the ROM treatment and who doesn't? Or does everyone? I can't imagine the workload. Then again, I have no idea how many people there are in this state to begin with. What, if any, training do you receive in this area?
Sarah talked about 9/11 so it appears that she was hearing what was going on around her. Is the training geared towards being aware that the patient may be hearing and feeling everything you do? What a surreal career.

She's my age, I was 18 years old back in 1984, so this puts her at age 54 today. What she had went through was truly sad. And the fact that she was in a coma for 20 years just blows my mind. So sorry what she had been through.

not mine, what got me was when she said to her dad she wants to go home (near the end of it), because they sold their home to pay for medical bills and they live in a trailer. To her she just wants to go to her home.

She was only on a feeding tube so they would have had to starve her to death in order to let her pass.
Her parents lived their life as they chose and made decisions for their daughter as was their legal right (as opposed to your illegal suggestion of continuing on in such a morbid manner and Lord knows why your mind would even go there).
God forbid I should find myself in such a situation with someone I loved dearly. I can talk big now but in that instance I have no idea what I would do. I wouldn't post my story though because certain types love to watch it just to add some negative comment.

Let's not be negative and judgemental when someone chooses to share their story and the ethical decisions they made throughout the person's life.
For the last 10 months I've been in hospital recovering from a form of brain injury. I'm waiting to go to a neuro rehab centre for 6 months. Knowing the miracles that are these two ladies I have more hope of a full recovery, if she can do it after 20 years then so can I. I wish these two remarkable women all of the success in the world, and that their independence and lives continue to grow. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

I can't imagine how this poor woman felt after being in a coma so long. I was only in a coma for a month and I had a rough time. I'm still not completely back to how I was before the coma. I woke up unable to write, spell. feed myself, and walk. I was very weak and I still feel weak sometimes.
