- it was really a matter of time
so about the weird audio weirdness, I did some reason and it looks like this was reported by other people, seems to be a thing that happens only in the tutorial area. Alright, let's hope that's accurate then, just in case I finangled with some other settings so looking forward to future things breaking because of that

Oh wow. SMBX can do that nowadays? It's like an entirely new game! Doesn't even feel like Mario anymore. I'm speechless.
A-side will never die
Ten thousand years later, the spirit of Plok rises once more to inhabit a suit of armor and wreak havoc
"I was testing the karma system" is the most Actual Literal Real-Life LOL thing cow has said in a while
i GASPED. i was expecting dark souls one of these years, but starting with demon's is the EXTREMELY correct and smart move
It really really is. I'm super happy he's playing original and not remaster too.
The games really should be played in chronological order for the best experience. It just shows off the evolution of the system so well.
"The end of the Plok playthrough hinted pretty strongly that he was going to tackle a infamously hard game. It's probably a Touhou fangame or the old-school Castlevanias."
It turns out that you MEANT it.
Wonder how the people who gave the souls series that reputation would handle the old Castlevanias. I tried 3 once and that game broke my spirit faster than any Souls game ever could.
Oh, my dearest Demon's Souls 2009. How I love you.
I hope you enjoy it, Raoman. As always, these games are best enjoyed as blindly as possible, cryptic as they are. So no worries if you miss anything, it is nearly inevitable that you will. The best way to proceed is to just go.
And I do believe the audio can be funky at times particularly with explosions, I'd say not to worry about it too much.

I literally said "Raocow is playing god damn Demon's Souls?!" out loud. What a jumpscare!
This is going to be a -very- interesting playthrough very much looking forward to it.
I'm unsure if it's intentional that you stroke through the -very- . If you where going for italic, that's "_" instead of "-"
I yelled out "Dude?! DUDE!!" to myself.

SHIT, DUDE
The real Plok starts here.
out of the frying pan and into the fire with this one, hoo boy
Speaking as a souls fan, I apologize in advance for the inevitable backseating.
the moment this evening i saw that raocow is playing demons souls, is the best thing i have ever seen i think. its proof that life is good, the human race is after all a justified thing. im slightly drunk. raocow is Good. the world would be darker without raocow.
It pays to poke around in the menu here; this is a complex game, and even if it could explain itself better, you can learn a lot there. Also, it's a fairly modern game - you don't have to be stuck with some settings. Change the camera to suit you, you don't have to accept it the "wrong" way for you!
OH SH!T!
The real La Mulana starts here!
From what I've heard, Demon's Souls is apparently the best place to start getting into the Souls games. As much as I loved the King's Field games, they play very differently from the later Souls games, and thus aren't a very good starting point.
9:18 - Oh, hi Melina. I've only ever played King's Field, the first Armored Core, and Elden Ring, so I didn't realize this voice had been in the series for so long.
I mean clearly the best FromSoft game for getting into Soulslikes is Metal Wolf Chaos.
huh
i used to joke that if i ever got a patapon pick i would choose a souls game but i was always like "he'd never pick THAT"
Raocow _AND_ Dark Souls?
Wonderful, just wonderful
Oh boy, time for raocow's impressive 3D navigation skills --
But this was, apparently, long planned. I am strapped in for a Ride.
It's interesting because there's very little active verticality in Souls right up until like... 3? The most we have here is drops straight down, so I doubt that problem will actually come up. The stats and obtuse weirdness are more likely to be sticking points.
@@HolyDeviant1 I think it's more that Mr. Cow is generally programmed for sidescrolling jump-em-ups, whereas in this - well, you already saw, a staircase in a circular room gave him a problem. There wasn't a lot of verticality in Halo 3 either and I remember that involving an awful lot of completely clearing the entirely wrong end of the map and only realizing something was even off when the script didn't progress.
And while I think these games are easy enough when you are used to the camera directions and have the buttons straight, they are rather unforgiving of errors. So I think it's gonna be interesting.
oh boy Oh boy OH boy OH Boy OH BOy *OH BOY*
Since I can't really not backseat when somebody is playing one of my all time favorites I will probably not say much in the comments of this series but just be assured, I am _in love_ . This will be so good.
See - I already want to comment on like 8 things, but I will not. I'm doing a restraint and just going to enjoy the process. Only thing I will point out, because I think it's somewhat obtuse: There is an option to invert camera controls. As somebody who likes to play these games in a way that the character is the point the camera moves around I need it for every single souls game. If it feels like you say that "the camera moves opposite of what you'd want." you can totally change that.
Zae died and is now bound to the nexus while the camera is the biggest foe, yet!
I can't believe Zae is fucking dead.
i'm actually shook right now, it's finally happening
The sound in the game is very echoey and ethereal. Its not a glitch or anything though emulating the game is notorious for sound issues. I think yours is set up fine from the looks of it
there is a future where rao plays ds2 and i'm not quite sure how to feel about that
demon's souls, to me, has a sort of "arcade-y" feel/structure compared to the rest of the souls games, and I think that'll ultimately resonate more with raocow in an odd way
Oh. Oh dear.
Well, let's see where this road goes.
This is the last thing I expected to see and now I really need to dig out my ps3 to reply and finish this properly. Beyond excited to see your experience with this, Rao
As someone who saw your commander Keen videos as a kid and got into RUclips by watching you daily... This is a combo that I never expected to see!
I'm both excited beyond words and terrified for your sanity as I consider this the hardest souls game out there solely for it's unique world mechanic... (The eye next to your bars)
Good luck, sir!
And don't worry, that boss is where most people die. Beating him would've gained you a few extra goodies, a glimpse at a future boss and a scripted death by said boss.
plok 2 looks great
oh jeez
considering how hamfisted you approach certain things this has the potential to be a hilarious unmitigated disaster.
Yeah, I expect a lot of "smashing face into a brick wall until the wall falls" type progress until he learns stamina management. I expect he'll get rolling down pretty quick, he likes fighting games so taking advantage of i-frames is not a new concept to him.
no spoilers but i will say, this game isn't at unforgiving hard as people say. it's tough, but it's not unrelenting.
...except that one boss that i won't name.
Definitely a lot more RPG than action-RPG compared to how these games start to get after DS2.
Not gonna lie i didn't expect this, but I am glad you're starting with the true first one, demon souls. It's probably the hardest one, which i guess makes sense, and I would be worried, but you play hard games all the time it should be fine, and you have patience, so it should work out. I'm excited
I did NOT see this coming. what a throwback to my Demo's Souls level in ASMBXT
guess it's finally time to see what all the fuss is about.
W H A T
As someone who likes to see Raocow enjoying himself and not getting angry at a game, I'm not looking forward to this.
Raocow starts acquiring some souls, oh joyous day!
I never thought I would see the day when raocow actually played a FromSoft game but let's fucking gooooooooo
the real demon souls starts here
Couple of notes everyone should go into the game with:
If you want to face all bosses, you have to emulate system clock or set it to December, otherwise you won't face the final boss's Yuletide Form. Unfortunately the true Peace on Earth Ending is not canon.
You can use a microphone to lure nearby enemies using voice input. If you don't plug in a microphone at all, you will have peak Enemy Intrigue by default. You want to plug a mic in and leave it alone or you will encounter a game breaking amount of Silencers. The Silencer Beast is immune to everything but Phosphorous Damage, which is possessed by a handful of items and one consumable which is limited to three (3) pickups before New Game+.
Two character creation related notes: 1 you already locked yourself out of both the Large / Small Chest uniques in character creation by not maxing the boob slider out to either side. They're cool weapons but they're not necessary. It doesn't matter if you're male or female.
2 If you do not customize the face in detail (you didn't) the ending will be slightly different and you are know as the Gormless Creature. It is unknown whether that makes the default characters the canonical survivors of Demon's Souls, but you want to stay through the credits since you're already doing a Gormless run.
Havok physics engine my beloved.
15:04 Ragdolls will never stop being funny XD
wait what?
Alright I'm locked in for this one. Can't wait for the OG flamelurker fight
as soon as i saw the thumbnail i said, out loud, 'oh no.'
i love this game but it is a rough experience
Oh, that's definitely not a game I would play myself. This time I'll just sit back and enjoy the show :D
Raocow has had enough of kaizo platforming, and decided to change it up with an entirely different genre of hellish difficulty. This is going to be *interesting*.
Who is Zae and why is Raocow trying to recreate her? Heh, I can't remember the last time we saw our cow playing around with a character creator like this.
Zae was from "Monster of the Week", a TTRPG raocow played around 2021ish. She was a fire and ice sorceress type. You can see her on raocow's channel in the video "Fire and Ice (A2XT 外伝 2 dec 23 extension)", which was based on the TV show that occurred inside the campaign called "Monsters Are Involved".
@@BobisOnlyBob Oh cool lore, thanks!
Going all the way back to demon souls for the first eh? Well good luck Raocow! Also, if you ever want to go further into the past of these games there is Evergrace, which is tangentially related.
This game is definitely good enough where is should have an inverse camera option in the options menu
Raocow playing through my favorite game ever AWESOME
Oh boy here we go.
Ah man, I still haven't played this one myself and I don't wanna spoil it so I'll probably be coming back to this playthrough later! Hope you enjoy your first taste of Souls games!!
The Island of Melanat sure looks different in HD
This game is the Dark Souls of games that predate Dark Souls.
Gender slider in 2009 is unbelievably based
Pretty cool to see how excited everyone is. Demons' is by far my favorite and the best of the four souls games. So much so I knew the trailer for the remake was the remake after the first music note.
Good luck cow. May the Firekeeper bless you. So the world might be mended.
holy shit playing original DeS. raocow just made my day.
Well now this is unexpected. I...barely remember anything from this game so I'm just going to enjoy the ride for the most part
Heck yeah!! The souls series are some of my favorite games of all time! Demon's Souls being sort of the odd cousin of the family, but loved nonetheless.
I think of it as the Diablo 1, or Age of Empires 1, or Borderlands 1. It's the first game of the series. Not yet fully refined but still an important step towards the arguably best or at least definitive version of it.
Not just Demon's Souls, but PS3 Demon's Souls!!!! Wowie!!!!
If you block, and you walk, you do the block-walk! Cool!
HOLY MOLY OLY.
While I was watching Ato I was thinking, "Man, Raocow might really enjoy the rhythm of Sekiro if he can get over the whole souls game thing"
Guess he's gonna get over the souls game thing.
"I didn't want _that_ to be my first death."
To be fair? It was kind of intended for that to be a first timer's first death. It _is_ possible to defeat that guy, but not to survive for long after.
Comment section's gonna suck balls for this one
The average souls guy's just gotta learn to let people learn, it's the truth. Maybe one day they will realize how antithetical backseating is to how these games are designed and do this. Maybe.
Oh boy. This game is fun, but very rough. Good luck!
Oh god the backseating is gonna be rough this time.
Don’t let anyone tell you you’re making a mistake, there’s like twenty ways to do everything in these games :)
Wow I was not expecting to see that game title!
Demon's Souls. let's hope this won't invite tragedy(mostly of the commenters and their back-seating).
Because of course it's going to invite a regular amount of tragedy(dying and dying).
Yoooooooo. Cow doing Souls is truly a thing! 2025 cow is best cow. What a evolution. Now please for the love of God, Raocow, please check your Ego and take advice. These games don't mess around.
Boy howdy.
It's been a very long time since I've played this, but you should be able to change camera control direction in the options menu if you prefer something other than the default.
On the one hand, I remember trying this game and absolutely failing to grasp it (despite being pretty good at games by then).
On the _other_ hand, I also remember beating King's Field 1 (the precursor to the Souls series) deathless "first try" with an image guide (when I say "first try" I'm not counting while I was getting used to the controls)... though it was _incredibly_ stressful doing so, and my repeat playthrough (RetroAchievements FOREVER!!!) was NOT deathless.
Edit: I should clarify, when I say "King's Field 1", I mean by the JP numbering. The US didn't originally _get_ that game, meaning the second was incorrectly called the first over here, and the third incorrectly called the second. Don't know if the fourth and final one was called the third though.
Hey someone else already said this but I'm saying again for emphasis, go into the menu, you can have camera controls that suit you
holy what
oh my
This feels oddly of a piece with La-Mulana, which is also punishingly hard and drip-feeds you lore.
I feel like the biggest thing you need to get used to off the bat is target-locking in combat instead of just swinging wildly.
Shame you can’t play online, I think it’s a big part of the experience, especially the first time. I’m glad you’re playing the PS3 version at least. I may be in the minority but I hate the PS5 remake for many of the art direction changes.
Was wondering if I should sit this one out since I'm generally not tuned in to Fromsoft games (have played a number of titles inspired by them, most recently Pseudoregalia, but not the OGs except for the very start of this one.) But now it's mandatory viewing for the new Zae lore.
YEAH BABY LET'S GOOOO
the sound is about half the emulator, but also about half the game. even back in the day this game was super jank
Well, this is unexpected... I love the Souls series, but I never actually played Demon's Souls. I started with Dark Souls. Though I was a fan of King's Field before that, so I've been a FromSoft fan for a long time. This is not at all the type of game I'd expect raocow to play, though. I haven't started the video yet, but I expect a lot of angrycow, at least until raocow gets used to the combat.
Also, there's a tradition among Souls players of making their characters look as bizarre as possible by editing the details of the face. Things like protruding foreheads, long faces with jutting chins, sunken eyes, that sort of thing.
shout-out to Squirtle, The Junker, and Toucan Dan the Gun-Hating Toucan Man
plok souls
god its so weird to see the Havok logo nowdays
Cyclops's brother failed in game design, like he fails in everything
Huhabababwaa WAHAT
OKAY
MAJOR SPOILERS:
demon's souls was released in 2009, which was both after the era of games being p. consistent with including camera inversion settings for individual axes and prior the era of games deciding that being able to set the camera to Correct was blasphemy against their vision
personally speaking, i also have no idea how anyone actually sticks to fromsoft's default face button arrangement, but i don't exactly have an explanation on how i ended up with mine other than "i started with elden ring" which is sure to get any elden ring players scratching their heads if they ever look at my setup
also also:
*_what_*
in general, you should really figure out how to explore your start menu sooner rather than later, as not only will that let actually find the settings menu, but you will also get absolutely _no_ context for a great many parts of this game without consulting what it actually bothers to plainly tell you
these games are very much ones that expect you to investigate things on your own - it's not an exaggeration to say that one of the best ways to start one is by pressing start the moment you gain control of your character and taking inventory over your character's starting gear and status, as it lets you quickly acclimate to how the game presents information and how to navigate the interface of a game that never pauses
I think I can pretty safely not backseat this one, as I've never played a single game in the Souls series and have barely even seen footage of it. Will be curious to watch this, though whether or not I can keep up with in regularly in the moment will remain to be seen.
Blast from the past
OH MY GOD
As someone who actually had to, no refund, remove Dark Souls from my steam account for my own mental health...
My only hope is that you don't burn yourself out. Or are at least better at these games than I was, so you won't get as frustrated.
(Also curious if you'd like Lies of P the way I ended up doing, but I think that'd make more sense to try once you played through at least some of the Souls first.)
havent watched in a while, started demons souls a while ago, but i think my ps3 was buggin cause i got it from ps+ back in the day, and i dont have it anymore. turns out, it let me play it once, and i didnt feel like going through the headache of sorting that out, this is the sort of game id want to play myself before watching, cool to see you play it tho
gonna watch colors ds, every single sonic game post ats ive missed and had to catch up on
Who is Zae? Is that a raocow character from something else he's done, or just something entirely different?
She's from Monster of the Week, a tabletop game he played around 2021. She's in an Advent Christmas video platformer thing - "Fire and Ice (A2XT 外伝 2 dec 23 extension)"
Oh no.
this is exciting! hope you have a good time (◕‿◕)
WOAH
HUH
This was not on my bingo card
oh man
WHAT.
I know you asked for no spoilers, but I have to correct you: the possessive in the title is clearly singular, so it's not "the souls of demons," it's "the souls of *a* demon".
Oh, this is going to be a ride. You're mad for not playing the remake, but let's see how this goes. :D
The remake may have QoL improvements and higher fidelity, but it actively worsens a lot of the enemy design.
The remake is deeply and actively evil. Like I'm not gonna mince words about this, it's antithetical to Demon's Souls. Also emulating the ps3 is surely easier I would imagine, but that's besides the point.
@ While I'm not quite that far into making moral judgements about it, I think we would agree it diminishes the artistry of the original.
@ It just does so in such an over the top way. Like, I think all remasters that change all the graphics diminish the artistry since, yknow, they literally replace all of it with other stuff, but the thing about an infamously bad Bluepoint DeS redesign like the Fat Official or Satsuki isn't just that it's bad but that a human made the decision to do it specifically in that way. What was their thought process? I can't imagine one that isn't deeply awful to me.
