    About us: We're Jon & Emilie, a husband and wife living in West-Wales with our dog Maggie. It's always been our goal to live within our means and be mortgage free, so we’ve just sold our house on Instagram and used all of our life savings to buy a 3 acre abandoned caravan park, so we can self build a tiny home.
    In todays video we share our first update in 2 months! We talk about what life's been like surviving winter in our tiny caravan on our land and get to work breaking down another abandoned caravan, ready to start our tiny house build.
    Special thanks to EcoFlow, who kindly *Gifted us the new RIVER 2, Portable Power Station, which we used in this video.
    The EcoFlow RIVER 2 is the best portable power station under 1kwh. It is a perfect solution for outdoor, travel or having as a basic assurance for home back up, click the link below to shop the new RIVER 2:

    Just a piece of advice. Don't wait so long to make a video. Let people know what your doing even if it's a small video. That way you don't lose your subscribers. Use that styrofoam to put around your tub and then cut some more boards to put around that to look better. Will help hold in that heat. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks Phyllis, we've been busy spending our time trying to make money, online sales on the platforms we sell on we're down 70% across the board and our usual money we make over the xmas period was almost non existent online, this meant us physically going to christmas markets all over the place to try and sell our goods in person which was more time consuming. We will be posting more regularly now as we actually have updates worth sharing, didn't feel the need to make a video to say we were busy working but i understand your logic in regards to losing subscribers. We're mainly doing youtube as a means to document what we are doing so we can look back on it in years to come see what we've achieved, if people enjoy it and want to subscribe and stick around that's great but that's not our main focus. Thanks for your comment 😀 PS: Great idea with the insulation.

    I actually prefer these kind of realistic projects where people have to earn money to finance their dream without all the hype and pressure you see with some you tubers 'having' to produce a video. Thanks, we just know if we smashed everything down or set fire to it like some people suggest it would probably be even more work in the longterm trying to sort out the different materials. As we are taking the materials to our local council recycling centre they require all the different waste separated so it saves us time sorting it in the first place 😀

    As a Park Home caravan resident here in the Cotswolds on the banks of the River Avon, I can fully appreciate what it's like with frozen water.
    It was five days last month with no water, no showers, etc because or -9 to -10 !!
    Buying litres and litres of still water from the supermarket to keep going.
    Even with proper double external lagging, pipes still froze, only other option is trace heating which for the limited times this happens, it's not really worth installing.
    Thankfully the gas central heating inside kept me warm along with a ceramic fan heater.
    Roll on the spring !! 👍

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  2 года назад

      Thanks for the reply Richard, i've looked into trace wiring as something for the future caravan build, i've seen the youtube couple "Van Wives" using it on their pluming for the winter in their cabin in Novascotia, I've been thinking about also building a tube/box from 100mm + pir insulation like celotex or kingspan to go from the water in the ground from about a foot underground all the way up to the bottom of the caravan floor and filling with more insulation. Our water pipe currently is only about two foot an i've also double lagged it and made a sleeve to go over the top of it from reflectics/foil bubble wrap and even with that the tap froze rock solid. Glad to hear you've managed to keep warm, any idea how much you've spent on gas per month to keep warm?

    • @richardthomson203
      @richardthomson203 2 года назад

      Two 47kg LPG bottles are what we use, sited in a metal container with an automatic valve to switch over from one to the other. In the cold months of Dec, Jan, Feb, I would say at least one bottle a month costing £74 delivered, that also included the gas cooker, hot water and central heating.
      It's balanced by the warm months were one bottle can last 2-3 months.

    Until you have broken a caravan down you don't appreciate the effort involved never mind all the waste you get and maybe upgrade the grinder to a 9" more power and can cut deeper and easier.

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  2 года назад

      My dad (Jon here) has just given me an old black and decker grinder made in italy from the 90's to use that was my great uncles, going to give that a go, feel alot heavier and more sturdy. I've looked at the 9 inch grinders and like that they have much more powerful motors so shouldn't get bogged down so much, do you think they also work alright with smaller disks? Just for future jobs i've got quite a few flap disks and grinding disks and wondered do they work on the bigger tools.

    • @danielsmith-lattimore8500
      @danielsmith-lattimore8500 2 года назад

      @@CampOutWest Personally I use both on the 9" depending what discs I have at the time but I also remove the guard which people won't like it just means you can get into smaller spaces and can use a little more of the disc but again that is down to personal preference like I say plenty of people will say to leave the guard on

Please please don’t let Maggie have branches/sticks or any wooden items, my dad lost a German shepherd as he chewed the branch, a tiny piece got wedged in his throat, he didn’t eat for a couple of days, a trip to the vets etc revealed a nasty infection that had spread just that short time too which sadly took his life 😢😢

    Great to catch up on what you have been doing and what you plan to do. I know what it’s like to caravan in winter but caravans 20 years ago weren’t the warmest - I don’t envy that part of your journey. Great progress made over the few days back - Emily you rock with the hazmat suit lol. 😂. Hope john’s back recovers. It’s great to see how much care you both put into recycling all the materials from the old caravans and not just arranging for them to be taken away and dumped. You are both blessed with Maggie, 🐕 she is adorable. You’ll soon be away from the “destruction” and into the “construction” of your new home. What a wonderful spot you have chosen. You can look forward to seeing the sunsets from the warmth of your new home. Good luck. Dave Birmingham. 👍

    Perhaps a scrap metal man could come to you. Might not get much for it but would save you cutting it up so small and you wouldn’t have to take it away yourself.. probably be better if you waited until you had all metal waste ready instead of one chassis at a time. Nice vid. Thanks for sharing.

    After you've cut the scrub and trees down to the ground , paint straight glyphosate onto the exposed ends and it'll kill them off .
    If you have a lot of stumps you can put some food colouring into the glyphosate so you can see where you've been.
    Using glyphosate this way is best way as it's used directly and not used indiscriminately.
    Get a Makita grinder it's not worth buying cheap one's, use the scrap money for one.

    Good evening from New Zealand.
    I was suggested your video that you did 9 days ago
    by YT as it came up in my suggested viewing.
    I watched that, and thought this is the type of new
    channel to my repertoire that am sub'd to that I may
    enjoy. So this evening I have gone back to the beginning
    am now am binge watching all your videos to date, with the
    mind to catch up to where you are at today.
    I wasn't going to actually comment until I reached the end that
    I hadn't seen.
    However, as I'm watching this one, and you describe how it
    is very loud in the caravan in a hail storm or heavy rainfall.
    I thought to make a suggestion, I hope that you don't mind.
    > With all those excess building materials that you have,
    aluminum siding, 4x2's and the like.
    My suggestion to you would be to make a Carport type
    cover over your caravan. This would not only reduce the noise
    of the heavy rain on your caravan roof, but it would also
    give a level of some insulation both in Winter and Summer.
    No Ice on the roof in winter - lowing the heating/gas/diesel
    requirements over the cooler months, and likewise will
    reduce the direct heat from the hot summer sun on the
    roof over the warmer months. You could also even,
    add your shower under that roof, near the rear of the caravan
    and closer to the home you're currently living in within your
    caravan until you have built your tiny home.
    This is just something I know from experience when in the past
    living in a caravan myself as temporary digs.
    It proved to be quite a good idea.
    I hope that idea may help you going forward.
    You have yourselves a new subscriber.
    I like what you are doing, have done similar myself with a
    rough piece of land and developing it in my younger yrs.
    Living as you are is a lifestyle many would enjoy.
    All the best going forward, I'll watch with intrigue as you
    develop your land. Cheers from NZ 🇳🇿 😎 Mike.
