Hugh was and still is a legend. Baz is great btw but Hugh was simply irreplaceable in my opinion. They are still The Stranglers but just different without Hugh. He had a violence and a snear in his voice that opitomized the hard core street sound. I miss him but what great great songs he wrote.

  • @Doubrelle

Hugh thought he was going to be the next Paul Weller, but it never really worked out for him - his resentment of the Stranglers longevity sees no signs of abating - Stranglers have a very tight stage set, Cornwells is rough and ready which suits some but he struggles to do justice to numbers like Golden brown

Who did JJ eventually marry? All I can find is, he was married to someone called Corinne and they had a son and daughter, but I can't find any articles or pictures of the wedding, family or anything. It was probably before the Net, but there are loads of articles which have been put on afterwards. Their kids must be grown up by now and he got divorced, but still no pictures or info about this area of his life. Can anyone shed any info on this?

@@treasurehunteruk9718 JJ seems like a private person, and I feel like Stranglers' members are quite private. I searched for their personal relationships and it came across to me like they don't live or get relationship like colorfully busy rock n roller. Dave's marriage life and his relationship with wife look so beautiful. And I read somewhere that JJ somehow had a regret getting married to french woman and then he got new girlfriend(I believe that interview was done in 2012, maybe?), and in these days maybe he is now single or got a new relationship, with children from previous marriage. And I am honestly surprised that he was married..I don't imagine him settled down so..

I don't think Paul Roberts was the best fit for the Stranglers, but I will say he's kinda fascinating to watch, much like Henry Rollins when he came into Black Flag.

Great post - first band I ever saw when I was 15 in 1978 - on a school night too - pis*ed on 2 cans of Breakers! . They seem to have been written out of punk 'lore too. Loads of stuff about the Clash & the Pistols but not much about the Guilford 'glers. Anyone wants to dip into their back catalogue should go for - ''Rattus'', ''Black & White '', ''the Raven'' - now there's a classic tryptych for you to rival any band ! Fantastic musicians too...

Bloody true! I love the old Stranglers, met JJ a few times,he say`s it was like losing a brother, and that he tried to call him a few times! ? Hugh, who I`ve met quite a bit doesn`t have JJ`swarmth, and indeed does seem quite bitter about the old band........
