because when you listen to music it pierces your soul and invibrates every fiber of your being...unlike most people where music is just a mear back drop to thier overwhelming lives...

Originally a B side to the Runaround single. The lyrics are in the form of a letter written to the devil regarding Steven, a childhood friend of Popper who lived a tragic life of depression and death in the family. When BT took off Popper left the misery of his friend but would wonder what ever happened to Steven, and the song was born. In context this song is so deeply touching.

John Popper: the Man, the Myth, the only guy ever to consistently procure and maintain multitudes of bags and variously sized containers, full of nothing but Brand New shiny harmonicas. ... I would like to communicate a humble and sincere thanks to John and Gina; as well as everyone else who helped along the way to MAKE Blues Traveller what it was and is and will continue to be, i believe forever; whether outside of time, or within, somehow. ... and kindly and causually in a respecting manner, thank that mASSIVe group of persons and pets and wildlife who had a part in the Blues Traveler experience; that group of contributors DOES indeed include, Brendan Hill, on the "drums". I love that jazzy rhythm at the foundation of Blues Trav's sound which you alone provide, one heartfelt beat at a time. Got to truly extend a mellow and warm, big old easy-going "thank you Sir" (with a genuine smile) ; for keeping the beat all these years. I LOVE your guys' music and you are superbly fantastic to see live -whether under the circus tent, or out in cold rain... Blues Trav, you all are truly appreciated in a rather deep and sincere, yet lofty and unbridled sort of way. ... Thx. -be Blessed everbody. : ) P.S. Be blessed especially, brother John, and all who you care for in this "life." ... Your biggest fan, potsmoker Doug Palmquist : ) P.S.S.: Be blessed brother :- ) and ALL who you love :- )

It is one of my favorite Blues Traveler songs. I have this cd from 1997 (I was 17) and always skipped this song. So immature to see its beauty. I loved Hook, Runaround, and Just Wait. A few years ago I "discovered" it and fell in love.

John Popper is an amazing musician. All around, he is a virtouso in the truist sense of the word. They have been my favorite band for about 20 years now. I play harmonica, inspired by John, I started about 17 years ago, i can match him about 80 % on all of his songs. I have the intros note for note, however, his solos still escape me, like i said, his solos i only have them about 80%, he is insane...the songs are pretty much all of them that i can play, this one, hook, run around, mountains.

Been a while since anyone posted about this song... Ill have my go. Excuse me if I ramble, half a bottle of rum will do that to ya.
This is an anniversary of sorts. Im 33 years old, and I had a friend throughout most of my childhood, Ill call him Jeff. Jef and I were inseparable... He liked wrestling, I liked wrestling, He was in boy scouts, I was in boy scouts, He liked metal, I liked metal... We grew up meeting our loves and passing it between us... Then it came to drugs. He liked drugs... I started drugs... I followed him down some nasty rabbit holes. Until I saw what it could do to me. I stopped... He didnt. I tried to pull him out, but I could never save him. He got worse, I moved on...
Cut a few years forward, I got a job and im working on building myself up, I get a call in the middle of the night. Its Jeff... Man was living in a halfway house... He had to fight to keep his mind straight all the time. He was a total burn out... He couldnt remember his own mothers number, but, he knew mine... He calls me and tells me hes ok, and that he misses me, and that when I can, I need to see him. I got him his moms number, told him to call her too... He never did.
That was the last call I got from him. This is the tenth year of that call....
He passed away shortly after, couldnt stand the pain of life anymore...
This song is to Jeff, This song is to the grief I feel that I couldnt save my friend... This is to the hope that one of these lives he'll break free.
    I miss you brother.

Look, It was over a year ago, I was young and naive and scared of the world! In the meantime I've been to rehab for posting cliched comments on RUclips. I'm a recovering addict and I'm still sensitive about the issue. It started with posting on a Rolling Stones video about how music was better back then...and I just lost control. I'm ashamed of my behavior and accept the guilt that must follow me the rest of my life. Thank you 69 for reminding me of how far I've come in recovery! God Bless
