It saddens me that I was never told this growing up in Kentucky. This is important to learn. Thank you for this.

thank you. not enough people know about this and it needs to be shared around. if you have find and watch the Trouble Behind documentary. there's also a whole chapter on Corbin in the book Buried in the Bitter Waters.

@@Maynard-il1yj you definitely dont see blatant racism on the streets in corbin but its still full of ignorant people who think the same about african americans

Still today they still want to keep people from talking about it Sadly there are a lot of small towns that were considered Sundown Towns. Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia just for starters. By keeping it hidden they allow history to be repeated and we are hearing some of the same talking points now. Our history is not pretty but we must learn from it

and people will argue up and down that corbin isn't and never was a sundown town. baloney

This is true. And, to make it worse, there are editors at Wikipedia who delete or minimize descriptions of these events.

@@marifromky I grew up in Corbin. My neighbors were black, my teacher was Hawaiian and my friends mom was Asian. Most people who live there now have absolutely no problem with minorities living there. It has a troubled past but it's mostly moved passed it and is a completely different place.

Hey can you please tell me if there are any blacks or Latinos because I wanted to take my husband down there and he's Latino to show him where my parents grew up and go visit the graveyard for my family are varied and stuff but I was scared because I've heard horror stories about blacks going down there or Latinos going down there and getting pulled over if they were with Caucasian women and stuff, so any input from you I'd really like to know just before we plan a trip down there lol

@@ClaudiaGarcia-wx5cb I live in Corbin and have for most of my life. I have black and latino friends with white partners who have also grown up here and though they've spoken to me about their experiences with racism in Corbin a fair number of times they've not mentioned any recent instances of forwardly blatant racism or of cops harassing them just because of their white partners. I believe your husband would be safe. There's certainly still a lot of racist attitudes here but people are generally more covert in expressing it and outwardly ignorant in understanding their internalized racist sentiments. A lot of people here do not believe they're racist while still harboring a lot of racism. Understanding history for that reason is incredibly important and I wish more of my Corbin peers would see this and like videos and make better efforts to acknowledge African American history.

If Sunup Corbin can gather more community support, it can join Glendale, CA, Goshen, IN, La Crosse, WI, and other former sundown towns who now stand proudly on the side of racial justice. See my website, sundown.tougaloo.edu/sundowntowns.php . Go Corbin!
