Bernard Butler never does anything particularly fancy, but every note he plays is unmistakably brilliant. He was one of a kind. Brett's pretty good too.
Oakes is a very good guitarist but Butler is out of this world, just a totally different level. Can't think of many British indie guitarists who've reached it.
Its the technical stuff that sets him apart as well. For example his Gibson 355 was a Stereo model designed to be split into two amps but he rigged up a special cable to run it in mono into a single Vox ac30 amp because it “sounded better “. It’s the unseen stuff like that which separates the true musical greats.
I was at the Tower Ballroom gig as well, my hubby went to the bar and on his way back he bumped into Matt an Brett, quite literally, coming through the swing doors on the back stairs. It was an awesome gig... one I will never forget. Brett read the lyrics to the talkover off three sheets of paper and chucked them into the crowd when he was done. Bernard threw his guitar on the floor at the end of this track and just walked off and left it whining. Fantastic stuff!
bloomin marvellous, Bernard Butler is my favourite guitarist of them all - I mean it - you just listen to these 8 minutes plus to understand why... he always wrote the melodies in my head. I love this so much - would be great to see him playing his guitar again...thanks for posting this
@@jimmysquire6242 Its just called Performance, I can't find any links online to buy the CD unfortunately. I think it's been erased. But there's a full video on youtube: ruclips.net/video/Pjam-FS_yoA/видео.html
IIthink this was taken from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Feb '94. I was there. Losing Myself (performed in the same show) became New Generation. Much preferred Losing Myself to New Generation.
omg! what an amazing version! thanks so much for posting this- great quality too- the extended ending is amazing- the lyrics, the vocals and the guitar work are all just brilliant- must have been a great gig to be at! Now its roll-on march for the Suede reunion! cant wait! yay! :)
Incredibly great! I know that without butler this wont be the same but I would die to hear this at Coachella... the last time I saw the boys was in SF in 1996 - its been too too long!
Performance is a brilliant bootleg in terms of package, sound, tracklist and lucky me, I got a copy. The question remains though... What are the COMPLETE lyrics during the solo? "...16 tears for every year..." are the only lines I can catch...
OMG! Yes! This is indeed from "Performance". If Im not gravely mistaken, its the 11th or 12th song on the album. I loved this bootleg but lost the copy while moving house! Thanks for putting this up! I found a part of me again!!
Come to my house tonight We can be together in the nuclear sky And we will dance in the poison rain And we can stay a while in Heaven today Let's stay together Let's stay, these days are ours Let's die together? Two hearts under the skyscrapers Come to my arms tonight Just you and me together under electric light And she will dance in the poison air And we can stay together Two hearts under the skyscrapers There's a time bomb in the high rise There's a blue suburban dream Will I see you up in Paradise Or have you come to catch me? Come to my arms I'm lost Just you and me together in the year of the horse Single file in the nuclear night And we could feel a little closer As we tumble through the sky Let's stay together, let's stay these days are ours Let's stay together Two hearts under a skyscraper Let's stay together, let's stay in this broken down love Let's stay together, two hearts under the skyscrapers
@AshtonArcher I'd imagine from the exemplary sound quality and the place of origin of the user who uploaded the video, that this is a recording from a show in Japan, but I could be wrong . . .
As heavy and dramatic as the hair rockers of three years before this. But with the twist only British music subculture could give it. Is it a 90s indie band doing sleaze or the other way round? why care.
This version should be remastered and put on the official suede channel
Butler was the man for suede
Oakes is good, but when you listen to this stuff you realize that Butler is perfect. Brett and Bernard were perfect together.
Agreed..
Oakes got better
Oakes has Autofiction , night thoughts and coming up to his name now.
Bernard Butler never does anything particularly fancy, but every note he plays is unmistakably brilliant. He was one of a kind. Brett's pretty good too.

John Squire is one of the few
Oakes got better on recent albums. Check out his playing on I don’t know how to reach you and flytipping just fantastic
This is how Suede should be remembered, the guitar is absolutely flawless...

Sadie Rose Bermingham: I used to have a very good quality recording of that show, audio only. If only I could get another.
This is one of the best songs ever written

Amen, brother
holy shit, that rapping at the end of Stay Together is fucking fantastic! Anyone know what he's saying?

I'd love to hear an isolated version of Bernard's solo on the long version of this (Brett's rant gets in the way)
Love Anderson aggressive rapping here
Come to my house tonight
We can be together in the nuclear sky
And we will dance in the poison rain

Just you and me together in the year of the horse

Let's stay together
Two hearts under a skyscraper
Let's stay together, let's stay in this broken down love
Let's stay together, two hearts under the skyscrapers
Suede would be nothing without Butler... Brett's sexy and dark lyrics only fit perfectly with the guitar riffs by Butler. I love Coming up though

Is this Blackpool 94 version? The song is great, but the live version rips the single to shreads.
wow :)
Also This Hollywood Life is called "Trashy"...
Wish I could find the lyrics for the rap in the middle, anyone?
bernard exorcising ghosts

What does Brett say from minute 4.20?
guitars on this and guitars on asphalt world? tough decision.
is it meant to be black originally? just wondering..
