I'm an old guy and have built many marionettes but my hat's off to you for this one as I can really appreciate the time that went into this and the intricate work that looks like a fairly high end Vent doll shrunken to half the usual size. Only sell cast duplicates, I don't have my originals except for a few and now that I'm a retired guy I miss my characters. Putting on shows is fun, entertains, gets you working at almost every art form: writing, music, drawing, painting, sculpture as well as lighting, rigging and can even lead into film. In other words it feeds your soul while entertaining others, what more can a guy ask for. I like your torso design as well, a bead really helps the hips move which is the most important part in getting a natural walk. I don't know what you are using as carving wood, but my favorite is western yellow cedar. I'm no longer on the west coast so it's not so easy to come by. I've seen other articulated eyes and mouths but most were much larger and even then they didn't look so good. Keep it up I hope you get a kick out of your next characters!

Thanks! The wood I use is Linden or Basswood though I will sometimes use maple for hands and feet. I like the way Basswood carves. It’s just a little denser than Cedar. I’ll also use Poplar due to the price. It’s often pretty inexpensive.
This puppet is 1:3 scale, which is larger than I normally build. The head was cabaret style, so proportionally larger than the body. I’m glad. I never could have packed all those functions into a smaller head (though I expect I’ll be tempted to try eventually)
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. If you have a youtube channel, feel free to drop a link!

An absolute masterpiece that will inspire many future puppeteers and marionette makers. Being a multidisciplinary artist is a rich but challenging position. I understand your struggles, but this kind of beauty largely surpasses the mediocrity we’re often confronted with.

That puppet is absolutely insane. When it's standing in the grass, next to the much taller man, it's such an odd sight. I love it!

Yes, for sure! This is why I’m usually hidden behind a backdrop!
In one play, years ago, we used this to our advantage. The Ice King, Utheric, threatened his bride, The Snow Queen, Noella, that he would send for his Frost Giant, Jorg. This happened in the first act. Then we carefully did what we could to distract the audience for two more acts until they would have forgotten the scale of the puppets (bought into the illusion) and had forgotten about the threat. Then in act four, we had a stage hand, dressed as a Frost Giant, reach through a window and grab her suddenly. The audience screamed. It’s amazing how easy it is for audiences to suspend disbelief.

The1stNightSky I’m currently building a new workspace. There will be more puppet making videos coming soon.
I do build puppets on commission but I already have four to build this summer.

It's so lifelike. Brilliant achievement. I am working with full body hand puppets right now (new puppeteer) and my biggest problem, besides the 3 finger hand, is the ability to open the mouth without pushing the head up. Just push the bottom of the mouth down so to emulate a real person talking. Just like in a marionette. I am experimenting with springs to keep the bottom of the mouth in the closed position and use a device on the bottom of the device to move bottom only. Still in the experimental stages but I have hope to change the style of full body puppets in the future. Although I love marionettes I never liked the strings attached, so I'm trying to control the puppet internally so it really looks like a person. Wish me luck. Thinking of calling mine the Jespuppet.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful creation...

Let me know how it goes!
I’m a big fan of push-pull cables for that kind of thing. You can accomplish a lot, internally, right at the joints with a few well-considered cables attached to a hidden lever. They can be quite small too! I bought some 1/16th ETFE tubing from McMaster-Carr and ran .38mm 19-strand stainless bead cord through it. Super tiny and powerful!

What type of scroll saw did you use?
I am a 2 year carver and looking to expand my possibilities
Inspirational Great work on so many different levels.

My scroll saw is a Delta and uses non-pinned blades. The scroll saw itself doesn’t matter much as long as it doesn’t require pinned-blades because the blade is the important part. I like Olson PGT double-reverse tooth. 10.5TPI. Product no. 49702
