Derrick is an excellent bass player and The Bangles sounded great with him. But.... It's never been the same without Michael since she was great on bass, and sang lead and adding that 4th harmony, and of course she's pretty as well.
The amateur footage (audience) in no way spoils the enjoyment. Great to see this, I was a fan from '84 (when they first became 'known' here in the UK I suppose) but must admit that even without Michael on bass, it's great to see them as they are now, far more experienced and not under the same record label pressure. Thanks for posting this! GJ
+Joseph Rivett The difference between singing (Sue) and interpreting (Micki). I would like to hear how Vicki does it. Just curious. At least her voice isn't so babyish. And it's closer to Micki's.
Many, Many, thanks for posting this video. It is always great to listen to live gigs from such wonderful bands and mostly these gigs are not available on DVD, so sadly many of these gigs are lost so it's just great to find some of these undiscovered gems on You Tube posted by devoted fans. Over the years I can remember so many gigs that I would have loved to hear again sadly these gigs were apparently never recorded by the artists concerned or clips of the gigs taken by fans so sadly I just have the memories wonderful though they are. But it's extra nice to see that people capture gigs like this and share in the love that we all feel for the Bangles. Great video! Tony.
I love this band so much, been a long time fan and I wish them nothing but love and success, but, it's just not the same without Michael there. No one sings like she does or plays bass like she does. I respect her decision to leave the group and their decision to continue on, but it's just not quite the same. The Bangles hold a special place in my heart and always will. Perhaps someday they will all four play again. (hey they parted ways once and reunited, who's to say it couldn't happen a second time?) As the great Debbie Harrys says, "Dreaming is free".
paintedbird after Micki left, I always hoped that Annette Zilinskas would rejoin them to fill the void permanently. I don't know what she's up to these days. Hopefully she's still alive.
nice to see the bangles playing, without Michael its not the same. September Gurls, only Michael can sing that. Susan; needs to stop singing that song, she sounds horrible singing it. Miss you Michael
I can understand Suzanna singing September Gurls without Michael there, but it was interesting to see that Vicki sang He's Got a Secret instead of Suzanna. I know she wrote it, but Suzanna sang it on the album and live for years.
Annette left to join her significant other's band "Blood On The Saddle. If you heard any of their albums or even the Electric Children's albums, you would know she was a decent singer. They need Annette to bring back the harder edge garage rock they had in the beginning. They got way too poppy & lost their edge after they got famous.
You go where the money is. If they stayed "edgy", they would've never attain the level of success they did. Annette was still playing in dive bars and clubs, but the Bangles became millionaires.
The garage sound is not the bassist's business. There's more musicians in the band if you have not noticed. It is more a matter of mixing. Live, they always sounded like a garage, but with Micki the rhythmic base was more solid and defined, without leting be rock.
On one hand, I was astounded with some of the grounding noise, set list snafus, pitchy vocals and Sue stopping to re-start (you NEVER restart playing live), they have played so many flawless gigs for so long. But then, it just felt intimate, like hanging out in their garage watching them rehearse. Loved it. Thanks for posting.
The intimacy generated is what makes this so endearing. The small venue, the little mistakes...it enhances rather than detracts. I wasn't there....but I wish I had been. It makes it better. A garage feel, yeah...in a totally cool, good way..
I’m sorry but when you’ve had the best female bass player of all time, Michael Steele in your band, all else are just substitutes! No one else has matched her voice, swagger, or abilities❣️I know they are doing the best they can without her. I still love the Bangles❣️
This particular gig was booked as a Paisley Underground show featuring bands of the genre from Los Angeles area. The Bangles started out as The Bangs as part of that genre and later became more of a pop band. This show was focusing on the early material exclusively.
cricket34 that hit was the beginning of the end, they released that as a lark, not thinking people would gravitate to it. They wanted to come up with a dance craze like the twist or the hustle. Debbie only whistles and jangles a tambourine. Nobody drums, it's a machine that does it, not very '60s for a group that reveres that epoch.
Sam Bradley: Good call, they have done exactly that. Annette Z. is OK on bass, but she does not sing so Michael S. Is still badly missed on vocals-- both lead and harmonies Problem is, all the members have other stuff going on, they are moms and have families, etc etc. and they only play a few shows every year so they can't really offer a prospective member a full time gig. Aimee Mann has played guest gigs with the Bangles and would be a logical addition, if they wanted to be a "fully functioning" band and play regularly. But she has a substantial catalog of her own songs and probably wouldn't want to join the Bangles as a 1/4 member. Although it would be very very cool to hear the Bangles version of "Voices Carry."
The Bangs were the original group's name; Bangles came about for legal reasons. Michael Steele did join the reformed group around 2000, but left in '05 to start a family. Marriage and motherhood have done nothing to keep them from doing great music, and they do look quite nice.
No, Micki did not leave to start a family. She actually wanted to tour more, but the girls have kids and couldn't tour as much as Micki wanted. That was one of the main reasons why she left.
@@frankmccormick1175 I answered you, elsewhere. I've done some... snoopin'...and haven't found that. Wouldn't matter to me, anyway, other than, you know, the usual male disappointment, ha, ha! Plus...none of us are gettin' any younger....except Susanna Hoffs, apparently.
HaHa...not a random bassist. A very nice guy and a friend...Derrick Anderson...he used to sing for The Andersons with Robbie Rist (who played cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch) on guitar (worth checking out!)
@@rodsgod4x they didn't get rid of her she left on her own terms I'm not sure why but it was her decision they would accept her back if she wanted to come back
+Michael Diehl Despite how talented Michael was, she didn't stand up to the label, either (just like the other 3) and their music became, for the most part, corporate factory pap.. I'll take the Bangs music over the Bangles.
I beg to differ. Micki FOUGHT David Kahne to get "Following" on Different Light. And at the end, it was Michael whom the execs first offered a solo deal. Turns out it was a ploy (and a lie) to be the final step in breaking up the band and get Susanna to go solo (and she took the backwards step into "manufactured pop" by using Kahne again). To say Michael "didn't stand up to the label" isn't exactly accurate or fair. A BAND is (should be) a democracy....they all had a voice in the direction they took. They took the first step to improve their image starting with "Hazy Shade", they made an effort to at least co-write all songs on Everything. They changed producer for Everything and they changed management thereafter, While still "commercial" I wouldn't say songs like "Make a Play For her Now", "Bell Jar" or "Glitter Years" is "corporate factory pap". No, you shouldn't blame the Bangles, collectively or individually for their fate. It was a combination of lopsided press (beginning with the Prince/Susanna thing), a producer who took them away from their sound and the typical turmoil of fame and performing that affects nearly any band. And to say "I like the Bangs over the Bangles" is to completely dismiss Michael's contribution altogether - the chemistry she was responsible for in the band for seven years, the solid musicianship (she was/is arguably the best musician), the deeper vocals in the balance of their harmonies and "darker", counterpoint songs like "Between the Two" and "Complicated Girl" (which serve to compliment the "lighter" Hoffs stuff). Finally, remember, during Doll Revolution, it was Michael who wanted to tour, write, rock and further the group. It was the others who considered it more of a "part-time" gig competing with their kids and families and were content to keep it a 80s-novelity. That's a big part why Micki left - she didn't want to be trivial.
+Thatmaninrio Adding to what +Michael Diehl said, Susanna herself admitted that the reason her solo album failed was because David Khane didn't know what to do with the songs "without Vicki and Micki fighting for pop". So you know WHO fought with the producers for the sound of the band. The sad thing is that now that Michael is not, they boast of being "the founders" of the band, but they didn't do it in front the producers in the '80s. Micki did it, without being founder. Also during the return in 2000, one of her conditions was to make new music and not be a band to remember, so they immediately entered the studio (Doll Revolution 2003), but the others canceled the concerts and she became discouraged. She left in 2004 and since then the others have only released one more album (Sweetheart of the Sun 2011). Without Michael's pressure to do new things, it took them 7 years for a new album and it's been 7 years longer since then. This shows that their real intention was always to live from their hits of the '80s.
Great songs... I just love these gals.
Derrick is an excellent bass player and The Bangles sounded great with him. But.... It's never been the same without Michael since she was great on bass, and sang lead and adding that 4th harmony, and of course she's pretty as well.

pretty cool, vicki saying "just for tonight we're the bangs" and then doing 'i want you'! she was always my fave bangle, i mean bang.
Eddie Van Halen may be the best guitarist today, but Vicki Peterson is the HOTTEST !!!!!
Love her BIG time.
If you really want to see her looking hot go to September Gurls on Letterman video!
rod beauchamp sorry I mean doing If She Knew What She Wants. Vicki is slinky and Micki is skanky!(in a good way)

Not taking anything away from Sue, but no one sings "September Girls" like Micki....

Great show! Although I was expecting Dover Beach and Michael to come in on September Gurls.
Terrific band - great sound, reminiscent of a female early Byrds.
Vicki with great guitar playing

I think Annette should rejoin & fill the void. That was real rock, before the pop polish.
I was a member of The"Bangles & Mash" fan club back in the '80s.
They replaced Annette Zalinkas because she could'nt sing. Why would they bring her back?
How I miss Michael Steele!
This was an awesome show. I saw the one the night before, at the Fillmore in SF.
