The color red was used in the argentine civil war by the “Federales” that’s why the sun is red in the confederation flag. There was another design that’s currently used by Uruguay as an alternate flag and by a province of Argentina “Entre Ríos” that’s called “flag of Artigas” it has a red diagonal on top of the white and blue.
Argentina's independence happened on July 9th, 1816. Saying the may revolution of 1810 was when independence was proclaimed is a pretty common and big misconception. What happened in 1810 was that we formed the first national government. Prior to this we were governed by a viceroy who responded directly to Spanish crown. The reason this was not us claiming independence despite kicking out the viceroy and forming our own government was that this one too was loyal to the Spanish crown. Mainly out of fear that a full fledged independence would trigger a Spanish invasion. The importance of this event relies on the fact that it marked the first step towards full independence. Also to my knowledge Phrygian hats represent The People more so than freedom, since they were commonly used by the lower class French citizens during the time of revolution. Also those "sticks" are actually the thing you'd use to carry the head of someone decapitated by guillotine, also a symbol of the French Revolution. Finally the Confederation's flag changes were due to the two sides during the civil war that was going on at the time. The "federales" or federals used a red colour, while the "unitarios" (idk what would be the translation for that" used blue, hence the red and blue colour changes from the original flag.
The Argentine independence was declared in 1816, but Argentina was already independent when that formality took place. Argentina fulfilled every criteria to be considered a sovereign state since the May Revolution, given that the Spanish authorities were no longer recognized since May 25th, 1810 and an independent government was established. In international law, the acts of rebels or insurgents are attributable to a state from the moment they take over the effective government of the state or establish a new state, in this case Argentina. The loyalty to the Spanish king was a distraction to avoid any immediate armed response, it was not real and it was not effective, because it detonated the Argentina War of Independence. Most historians agree that Argentina was birthed by the May Revolution.

Good video. The theory of the Bourbon colors in the flag has a lot of weight. Because the independence of Argentina begun when Napoleon overthrew the Spanish King (of the house of Bourbon) and put his brother (Joseph Bonaparte) as puppet king of Spain. On May 25th 1810, the people in Buenos Aires, Argentina demanded an "open cabildo" ("open town hall") to discuss whether Argentina would recognize this king or the previous one. Then they demanded the Spanish viceroy to step down and instead appointed their own viceroy. So since this event known as the May Revolution, Argentina was in fact an independent nation, but the leaders of independence still claimed to rule on behalf of the overthrown Bourbon King Ferdinand VII, imprisoned in Spain. Only in 1816, the Argentine provinces met and agreed to full independence from Spain. Also there is some dispute on whether the sun in the flag represents the Inca god Inti (Argentina has little ties to the Incas, but Belgrano was a fan of them and wanted to put an Inca descendant of the royal line as king of a united South America, it would have helped to garner support in places like Bolivia and Peru which were the central regions of the old Inca Empire), but on the other hand the "sun with a face" symbol is common in French revolutionary flags and may have been inspired by those.
2:00 I correct something minimal, in 1810, Argentina managed to have an autonomous government led by the first government board, however we were still in some way, a country dependent on Spain, it was not until 1816, when independence was declared. Today is known on May 25, 1810 as the day of the First National Government, while on July 9, 1816, as the independence day. Many are confused with that and it is normal, but it is good to know.
The painting of the mapuche warrior is a CHILEAN one, and the arauco war is something that only was incumbent to chile, the warrior showing in the painting is Lautaro, a way know character here in Chile.
Argentinian independence was actually declared in 1816, the revolution of 1810 gave us our first national government (formed by locals), but we were not independent until the Congress of Tucumán declared it. I would like another video on the whole history.
During the 19th century there were two factions in Argentinian politics, one of which used the light blue color (celeste) in their flags and one which used the darker variant (azul). This was also true of Uruguay, where local factions allied to the opposing Argentinian groups used the same kind of blue as their allies (eventually, the Uruguayan flag ended up with the darker blue but, in a compromise, they used a variant of the Sun of May that was typically found in the light blue flags). It's likely that both the blue and the white were inspired by the name 'Río de la Plata' (literally "River of Silver"), white standing for silver and blue for the river. During the independence revolution, there was another government called Liga Federal (Federal League) that controlled part of northern Argentina and used a red, blue and white flag (the colors being inspired by those of revolutionary France). Many Argentinian provinces use variants of the Liga Federal. Also, I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned that there is a variant of the flag that does not have the sun.
You can make a video about the Independence process! You can then correct the date of the actual independence, the intresting part of it is that 1810 was not actually the independence day, but the emancipation in name of the King that was prisoner at that time (the Juntas)...
Is really funny the history of why in centre america many flags looks like the Argentina. In 1816 when Independence was declared the new government send a battleship with naval patent of corso for 2 years called "La Argentina" and at command Hipólito Bouchard, french of birth but one of the founding father of the nation. He make a stop in Hawaii and the king Kamehameha I, was the first head of state who recognise the Argentina as nation. Later he make some stops in centre america helping people to riot from Spain and he make some copies of the flag for this people. Fun fact, he make a stop in California, actuall USA and for 6 full days that city have the flag of Argentina... He manage to make a full round trip for all the world fighting pirates, liberating slaves, taking ships and giving the flag to other nations. great guy!
Some late corrections. The name of Argentina comes from Argentum, not argentinium, silver in Latin. It was named after the Rio de la Plata as Terra Argentea, Land of Silver. And then, by 1601, it was already established as common use the Argentina derivative from Argentea. The sun of May is the official War Flag and for protocol. But the sunless flag is official and can be used for general purposes.
I may not agree, there is no longer a war flag or a civil flag, in 1985 it was decreed by law that the official flag has the sun and can be used both in government acts and by civilians.
Actually, since the decade of 1880 the sun represented that the country was in a state of war. In case the country wasn't fighting a war the flag was only blue and white, without the sun. This remained that way until 1985 when the government sanctioned a law that based that the flag must contain the sun in all of its versions.
Hi, thanks for the video, I found it really informative. As an Argentinian myself I find some of your facts a little... off. I don't want to sound too critic but you should check your sources, since even some facts can be found well documented and referenced in wikipedia. For example: - Dating argentinian symbols back to pre-spanish settlements is wrong since spanish colonization was made posible via extermination of said aborigines. - 1810 is not the year of independance from spain. To be even more correct, the "Primera Junta" (05/25/1810) vowed for the real king of spain Ferdinand VII (currently prissioner of the french) and the crown of Asturias (From the house of bourbons, with the white and blue colours). Thats why French and Berutti, two nobles that participated on the "Cabilido"(form of goberment of the nobles) started giving this cockades ("escarapelas"). But the apparition of the "escarapela" can be dated even further before, at the time of the English Invations to the Rio de la Plata (1806-1807) when the militia and the "Regimiento de Patricios" used this emblem to firstly represent the spanish king against the English forces. - Belgrano first used the white and light blue flag in 1812 in Rosario and during his campaign to Peru, without knowing that the "Triunvirato"(curret form of goverment at 1812) decided against it, since could be seen as a new symbol completly against current and former kings of spain. - Belgrano's flag was approved by the "Asamblea del año XIII" in 1813 to be used in the campaign of Gral. San Martin. - The goverment of Rosas and the flags that came from those times are due to the Civil War that was in place between "Federales" and "Unitarios" And I would like to point out something that is somewhat related to history but more to narrative: Don't name the territories as if they were part of the current nation. It's not right to say "Uruguay was part of Argentina", you should say "Uruguay was part of the Provincias Unidas del Rio de la Plata from its formation until 1828" Thanks again for the video, hope you have a nice day
The red on the rosas' flag comes from the divisa punzó, a simbol rozas used to identify those who followed him, he put it in the flag because he "United" the country under the Argentinian confederation, that itself comes from argentum, the Latin name for plata (silver)
The red in the flag means "federalismo" in oposition to the "unitarismo". Basically the idea of a federal goverment oposed to a centralized nation based around buenos aires.
These faction were taking power in each of the provinces and working together to take over argentina. The unitarios had the goal to get buenos aires back during this time, wich meant to control de port and the economy of the rest of the provinces. This civil war lasted for about 40 years and was really involved with all if uruguayian civil wars and independence.
Indeed. Both the Argentine and Uruguayan flag were coined by masonic leaders. Is not just the Inca sun god Inti but the Zoroastrian sun of the masonic lodges, which themeselves have their roots, among other places in ancient Alexandria, which was founded by Macedonians whose flag was blue with a sun in the middle that blue is the ispiration for the blue in the Greek flag.
I do think the red sun in the Argentine represent the Federalists (Juan Manuel de Rosas was one, and they used the red colour to identify against the unitarians, which used the classic light blue colour)
People actually used a different version of the flag until 1985. It was called "Bandera civil" (Civil flag), and it was just the current flag but without the Sol de Mayo in the center. To be honest, I like it more than the current design. It looks more simple and stylish in my opinion.
As Argentinian i should clear out a common mistake about the sun in the historical flags. After the end of the second civil war, the republic was established with the light blue colors, but without the sun. The light-blue sun flag represented the state o war with another nation (it was our war flag) but commonly we only used the only blue-white-blue flag (without the sun) as national badge. During the civilian-militar governament, in 1982 the south atlantic war began betwen Argentina and the United Kingdom because of territorial conflicts, moment were the war flag was rised again. After the conflict, with the reinstatement of democracy, we barely used the real national flag because the successives presidents wanted the south atlantic islands back, so they used the war flag all the time. Finally in 2010 under a socialist regime, the state declared that the war flag will be now renamed as "national flag". So, until 2010 the use and name of the sun were for war, and were officialy put in the flag in that year.
including the fact From the white on the flag being silver it makes more sense if you see that the argentine name comes from argentum, which is silver in latin
The reason why they change the sun to red, was because in that time Argentina was divided between 2 parties, the Unionist and the federales, the federales ( wicht were the ones who ruled the federation ) use the red to identified themselves, so they put the sun red to symbolize the Federalism
This is a big misconception that needs to be clarified, the cross of burgundy was a military flag not the flag of the spanish empire, the "flag" that represented the empire and was on all its territories was the king coat of arms in a white background similar to other european powers
The design on the sun is a direct copy of the jesuit symbol, it is a very obscure thing that most people aren't aware of. Imagine the power of the catholic church at that time.
The original argentinian cockade was red but it was used by the people who could enter to the first open city hall (or Cabildo abierto as we know it here) in may 1810. It was a way of recognising easier the people who could go or not. So it could be disputed if that is the origin of the red for Argentina. Also red was the color for the Federal faction during 1820's till 1853 in oposition to the light blue used by the Centralists (need a better word for translating Unitarios) when Juan Manuel de Rosas was defeated (military) by Justo Jose de Urquiza. Ps: it might be a little confusing in how you narrate it. I think you should have said thar Rosas was not the president of Argentina (or the Argentine Confederation) if not he was the governor of the province of Buenos Aires. Ps2: during the Argentine confederation era, there was a variant of the flag which had the words : "MUERAN LOS SALVAGES UNITARIOS" or Death to the savage centralists. Note that SalvaGes was not a typo at that time. Today we would write SalvaJes. Ps3: keep up the good work man!
El sol Inca es porque Belgrano proponía que nos gobernase un cacique Inca. The Inca sun is because Belgrano (and others) proposed that an inti cacique governed the new country
Argentine civilians were not authorized to use the flag with the sun until the late 1980s. The official flag of institutions had the sun but you could not have one of those lawfully flown at home.
Im from Argentina and the argentine flag was inspired in the house of bourbon. Even the mayo sun, inri,(12 rays) was changed into the sun of masonry (32 rays).
Juan Manuel de Rosas pertenecio al Partido Federal. El color rojo punzó representa al federalismo rioplatense. La bandera de Rosas representa federalismo.
You forgot to mention the "Artigas Flag" of "Liga de los Pueblos libres", a sort of competing federal project that included Uruguay, and 4 argentine provinces. And it's "argentum", not "argentinum" greetings from Argentina!

Argentina is the best
The painting of the mapuche warrior is a CHILEAN one, and the arauco war is something that only was incumbent to chile, the warrior showing in the painting is Lautaro, a way know character here in Chile.
Sure I would like to see a video of the history of Argentina's independency !
Okay, so basically the indigenous people of Argentina were Belarussians confirmed
What? Explain this
@@yoelarcoiris7 Two years late to explain, but take a look to the design of the Belarussian flag and you'll see.
@@lucasgonzalezhrynkiewicz6016 as it is the only official flag in the military it is still the war Flag.
The Sun of May became part of the official flag decades ago
4:50 Fun fact, the first flag still being an official national flag, and the second is the flag of the Province of Tucumán
It's argentum, not argentinum 😉
Actually, since the decade of 1880 the sun represented that the country was in a state of war. In case the country wasn't fighting a war the flag was only blue and white, without the sun. This remained that way until 1985 when the government sanctioned a law that based that the flag must contain the sun in all of its versions.
Fair to mention Uruguay used to be a Argentinian province, which may explain the similarities in flags.
Extraño a nuestra Banda Oriental :'(
Hi, thanks for the video, I found it really informative. As an Argentinian myself I find some of your facts a little... off. I don't want to sound too critic but you should check your sources, since even some facts can be found well documented and referenced in wikipedia.
For example:
- Dating argentinian symbols back to pre-spanish settlements is wrong since spanish colonization was made posible via extermination of said aborigines.
San Martin.
- The goverment of Rosas and the flags that came from those times are due to the Civil War that was in place between "Federales" and "Unitarios"
And I would like to point out something that is somewhat related to history but more to narrative: Don't name the territories as if they were part of the current nation. It's not right to say "Uruguay was part of Argentina", you should say "Uruguay was part of the Provincias Unidas del Rio de la Plata from its formation until 1828"
Thanks again for the video, hope you have a nice day
9:32 Looks like a Austria flag with a sun =D
I like the darker shade of Blue at 5:53.
Also, I noticed that the flag of Uruguay is very similar to that of Greece.
Your vedios are amazing
( thanks for the video ).😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍
People actually used a different version of the flag until 1985. It was called "Bandera civil" (Civil flag), and it was just the current flag but without the Sol de Mayo in the center. To be honest, I like it more than the current design. It looks more simple and stylish in my opinion.
6:45 the red hats were used by the federal soldiers during Arg civil wars. Henceforth they represent federalism
I wasn't sure I wanted to watch these at first since Barby already does videos about flags, but they turned out to be interesting.
0:24 Argentina smiley face
The red sin at the minutes 7:02 is because the counrty turns intro a federal unión whos president was Urquiza
Urquiza fue un traidor a la patria y a la causa federal. Urquiza fue asesinado por sus ex-combatientes en 1870.
Thanks for the video. Love the way is has images when describing the history.
Régimen socialista? Eduardo, fuiste a la Facultad? O leíste al menos El Capital?
Qué dice este salame
VAMOS ARGENTINA 🤘
including the fact From the white on the flag being silver it makes more sense if you see that the argentine name comes from argentum, which is silver in latin
Imagine the power of the catholic church at that time.
muy buen video, tambien hay otra version que dice que los colores celeste y blanco son por la virgen maria
The cockade was original y red color, and it was used to identified the revolutionary's guys just not for killed them in them.
Great vids you are doing.
Would love to see you do Bulgaria - a fascinating history for a very old country

9:32 i'm not sure that one flag has to do with argentina, i think it has to do with other stuff but i can't quite remember what
The origin it's debated, whoever at least one of the flas was created by San Martin who helped liberate Peru and whom was also Argentine so...
Nice! Have you done Martinique by the way?
Please do Serbia next!
Interesting
the real independence of Argentina it's 1816, no 1810

Those red hats were used in ancient Rome and they were used by slaves that gained freedom. And they were red because one of Rome's colors was red
the flag made by manuel de rosas represents unitarism, hes political party
Juan Manuel de Rosas pertenecio al Partido Federal.
El color rojo punzó representa al federalismo rioplatense. La bandera de Rosas representa federalismo.
