I rode the C&T the week before on the last week of passenger operations. Man if I'd known this was running .... but would already be back in the UK. Cant beat this route and was happy with the recordings that I managed
Hello Thomas, A beautiful video of a photo freight train on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. I love this railroad with its great steam locomotives. Thank you for the fantastic video and have a nice first Advent.✨ Best wishes from Germany. Wolfgang
The last freight was actually towards the end of 1968. There is a nice article in TRAINS about it. That last year the Railroad had only sent round trip 5 trains over the pass between snow melt off and September of that year. They weren t even plowing it through the winter at that point anymore.
What were they hauling? 2 refers for what? Where did they pick up the passenger cars with people in them? And why so many empty gondolas? What were they going to pick-up? Plus, where do they get their coal? I know that they converted their 🚂 locomotives to oil but they would still use coal to heat their stoves in the shop and caboose!! I would like to have a more detailed show, please!!!
On October 24, 2024, Pete Lerro Photography held a photo charter on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. On this day, 489, painted in D&RGW livery, leads a freight out of Chama, New Mexico, bound for Osier, Colorado. www.lerrophotography.com/ www.cumbrestoltec.com
Once or twice a year they run what you could call a "rail fan's special" where it's just a back and forth with empty freight cars for photographers. They aren't hauling anything with them. They asre a museum after all, and part of the job of museum is to showcase what actual operations would have looked like.
@@vinnyheaphy1372 Yea, but it's tourist railroad and an operating museum, not a commercial carrier. there's nothing to pick up. There's no customers on the line, whatsoever, and hasn't been since the 1960's. It's just an opportunity for railfanners to see what a actual train would have looked like in operation (as many of the tourist passenger cars are from from historical) while also being useful in getting some of the freight cars some spin time on the bearings to keep them from seizing up. They do also do some offseason training and certifications for their operators on these, also. So it all serves a purpose, just not a financial one. And from what the OP said about this particular run, it was a charter railfan/photo run. So that answers where the passengers came from.
My advice to all shooters : AVOID LERRO PHOTOSHOOTS . Too pricey , too many period fake actors and zero planning on his team . Did the East Broad Top charter last fall and it was a total joke . Who is in charge of this circus ?!
@@YardLimit You are welcome , as I said the price charged did not reflect the worth of the experience . WAY too much time was wasted cutting grass and weeds on the day of the trip . Hours wasted on headlight repair and do not even get me started on the period actors and their poses.... Great vid , BTW !!

Glad you got to ride it and visit the US.
Crazy amount of slippage near Lobato! Awesome to see that long reefer in a consist as well, it's such a unique car for the narrow gauge.
Early morning and the rails were wet. That reefer is cool. It was recently restored by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec.
Szép videó!👍😀
Thank you!
Magnificent and scenic video!! Like 102, new sub from Spain 👀👀
Thank you very much!

Thank you, Wolfgang! I never get tired of this railroad!
Wow!! So beautiful! The lucky folks riding in those rear three passengers cars ... on my 'to-do" bucket list. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you! I hope you get to do it next year!
!Good video, like!
Thank you very much!
Awesome. That was amazing to see.
Thanks, Dom. This was a fun one to make!
Good morning Thomas. Another right video of #489. I guess #489 got fixed on the fuel oil. Thanks again, I’ll be watching for next year’s videos. 👍👍👍
489 has been doing the bulk of the work recently. Seems that there are no problems.
@
Thanks 🙏
I love steam locomotives! ❤❤Great video that I thoroughly enjoyed!!! Thank you ❤
Glad you enjoyed!
Rode it from Charma to the end with my daughter back in 1987
Sounds kind of like Soo Line 1003 there!
I wonder what was the last COMMERCIAL freight load was in those reefers and to who and where?
Not sure about the reefers, But I think the last freight was in 1970.

It costs way too much and is hardly worth the $ . Lerro Charters are a bust , trust me on this. Details if needed , just drop me a line.
