Public Lecture-Space: The Hunt for Hidden Dimensions

- Lecture Date: Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Extra dimensions of space may be present in our universe. Their discovery would dramatically change our view of the cosmos and would prompt many questions. How do they hide? What is their shape? How many are there? How big are they? Do particles and forces feel their presence?
This lecture will explain the concept of dimensions and show that current theoretical models predict the existence of extra spatial dimensions which could be in the discovery reach of present and near-term experiments. The manner by which these additional dimensions reveal their existence will be described. Searches for modifications of the gravitational force, astrophysical effects, and collider signatures already constrain the size of extra dimensions and will be summarized. Once new dimensions are discovered, the technology by which the above questions can be answered will be discussed. Lecturer: JoAnne Hewett, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

isn't time 3 dimensional, past present and future?
Actually, just after my previous post ... because time is on one line then it is only ONE dimensional, the limit for us is that we only experience a point at a time.

Actually time would be considered 2 dimensional because the present is a point on the line going from past to future. You could have past as -y, present at 0 and future +y.
Isn't the "string", actually a string-shaped disturbance in the Higgs field that vibrates, not like an object at all?
But its only ever now. The past no longer exists and the future doesn't either...I'm confused... :\
+craigyb check23 It gets worse - there is absolutely no room between either for a now to exist in - unless there is a time quantum of Plank duration - about 10 to the negative 34 or approximately ten billion trillionths of a second! So ...just where the hell are we and how do we imagine we are any where???
@sean mauer .. How in the blue hell is time 2 dimentional. Going from left to right,down to up or past and future is still one dimention man.if I jump horizontally tats 1 dimention. But if I jump at n angle that would 2 dimention cuz its both upwards an 2 left.

what if it's only the past? the future never stays future and the present never stays present...it's all in the past eventually
Cave persons were wondering if there were extra dimensions to their cave! The also wondered what they would eat tomorrow and if that Neanderthal up the track is going to try to steal his woman.
To say that God created the Universe is like saying I created my fingernails. If you look for a beginning, you will never find one. My conception could not have occurred without the possibility of conception. Nor could have the theoretical big bang. In the infinitesimal world there are beings in my body, deep within the quarks and leptons, who perceive me as a Universe, aghast at the idea that there may be something beyond. To some of them, I am God. But others constantly frustrate themselves with pointless discussions trying to prove or disprove my existence. Nevertheless, I enjoy working in my garden, oblivious to why seeds exist. This is Cosmic Consciousness.
