- We rescued Sammy when he was 5 weeks old, after he fell out of a tree. We tried to release him back outside twice but he didn't want to go. This is very unusual for a squirrel, most will wild up, start biting and chew on everything. We never expected to have a squirrel decide our house was his home. Keeping a squirrel healthy with diet, exercise and special lighting is much more complicated than we could imagine. We do not recommend squirrels as pets. They are illegal to have in most US states. Sammy is one in a million.
I would love to make friends with a squirrel like this. Our squirrels just look in the window at me wanting food.
He's sooooo cute. I never thought that squirrels could be that sweet, until a brown squirrel got hit by two different cars. I saw her laying on the ground,thinking she died, but she didn't. so I took her in,in a box to let her pass , but the next day she looked @ me. so I fed her crushed peanut on peanut butter, she started to get better, and after 6 wks. set her free, now I miss her so much... thank you for sharring ps I CALLED HER LIT'L MAUMMA, SHE HAD BABIES

That's just about the cutest thing EVER, it made me tear up. Sammy is so very adorable, he reminds me of my dog. If I ever get to kiss a squirrel on the head, i could die happy.

Sammy is a sweetheart, and you're so good to him...no wonder he wants to stay!I do wildlife rehab and have the perfect property to release them in, so they're close by. Many are like him, affectionate and always wanting attention. It's tough getting yardwork done, but fun!! I have lots of squirrely help. Most still want to come in the house to see what's new every day.

I just discovered Sammy. How he loves you. How he loves the caress of your hand. How he loves the tummy rubs. It's so sad watching these videos knowing he is no longer with you. How you must miss him. Just seeing how sweet he is, I feel like crying. He had a short but blissful life with you and thanks to you. He did not want to be a wild squirrel. He wanted to be your baby. Given his personality, he would not have survived two days in the wild.

@@dommidavros2211 I hope you're right and that Sammy is still enjoying a vigorous life. Since the video was posted about 16 years ago and there are no recent postings, I assumed . . . . I would be delighted if my assumption was wrong.

I love squirrels and I ain't been feeding them in the backyard for years. The closest they have come to me was when one took a peanut out of my hand. Wild squirrels will not allow you to pet them, at least as far as my experience has shown. If you want a squirrel like Sammy, I think you need to raise them from the time they're just born or shortly after. I've heard pros and cons about keeping squirrels as pets. You certainly need to have enough space to let them run around in your house and you best clear out all the delicate items.
I'm jealous of watching all these RUclips videos where people get to pet them and the squirrels are so cuddly.I swear that one thing on my bucket list is to raise a baby squirrel until he's big enough
to be set free. And if he keep coming back and I feel he cannot survive in the wild, then I guess I have a little friend for the long-term.

I'm guessing that each squirrel has a significantly different personality, and different behavior. I mentioned that because i watched a video of an animal rehabber who'd raised an orphaned squirrel, and her video was advising people not to keep squirrels as pets. Her squirrel acted as if it had eaten a bunch of caffeine pills! It would NOT sit still, and it was constantly jumping and running around, as she was doing the video and holding the squirrel in her arms.
May I ask what became of Sammy squirrel?

It's funny how on the one hand people treat these little creatures as if they have there own little feelings and personalities but on the other side of the fence someone else has no issues drowning Squirrel Nutkin in the water tank because he stole a bit of loft insulation!
