Moments from an Early June Garden

  • First memories, early summer sun, garden wildlife, June flowers and our dogs Max & Remi enjoying life in the jungle garden. A short video filmed and put together over the (rare!) sunny evenings so far in June, hopefully there are more to come! The garden is really filling out with the blend of rain and mild temperatures as the Gunnera, Musa basjoo banana plants and tree ferns create a lush green display and the Mediterranean garden area looking splendid in the evening sun. The foxgloves, Alliums and flowering Cordyline australis are providing colour, scent and plenty of nectar for the bees and other pollinators as the garden is coming alive for another summer. More informative / inspirational content coming soon but I wanted to share what we've been enjoying recently too.
    I'm currently saving up for a few items of filmmaking kit to improve my videos so if you enjoy watching them and would like to show your support, then please head over to my Ko-fi here, any kind donations would be appreciated: ko-fi.com/geor...
    Thanks and happy growing,
    George

    Precious moments. Time truly flies when measured by the next generation's journey along life's road. Great work George

      I agree completely, I always say I had no measure of time before having children. They make you realise how fast time moves.

      Thank you very much and wise words from you both @vincenzecalzone8666 and @leewatson6959 . Time has always gone by quickly but I think you're bang on it terms of how it's measured when you're celebrating developmental milestones on a monthly basis and with every year bringing new celebrations, challenges and responsibilities.

      Thank you so much, that's very kind of you to say and I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Yes, I wanted to share a little more than just the practical creation of the garden and logical reasons behind the planting - sometimes it's the atmosphere, light and experiences that really make a place magical.

    What a lovely video! You will love rewatching videos like these as time goes by. My girls are 10 and 7 (nearly 8) and it seems like only yesterday that they were ages with your daughter. Cherish these moments! I also have to say that your video skills are excellent. I especially love the slow-mo bits with the bees entering and exiting the foxgloves (which I especially liove watching in my garden) as well as the bird song and your daughters laughter.

      Thanks for your kind words Gary and it's good to know the blend of clips and footage is appreciated. Yes, I suspect you're right and this will seem like just yesterday when Harriet is more grown up in no time at all! Right now she loves running up and down and giggling like I'm sure yours did so it's great to be able to catch some of that on here to rewatch.

    Stunning videography skills there George! 👍You really have a talent and a creative eye. Ever thought about doing wedding videos and christenings on the side? Think of all the plants you could buy! Keep up the fantastic vids and looking fwd to seeing your fire pit complete this year unless your little girl demands a princess castle in its entirety which obvs would take priority numero uno 😂
    Ps. Had the central heating on here in Cheshire every day so far in June. Flipping freezing and more like hot cocoa and woolly mittens weather 😳 not tropical 🌴 yet

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  2 месяца назад

      Ahh thanks Gina, that's kind of you! I actually photographed weddings on the side for a while during / after uni and my brother and his partner are wedding photographers. In all honesty, it wasn't for me at that time, I didn't enjoy the stress and people management side of it which you absolutely need to be on top of to enjoy the creative side. I wouldn't have the time to do anything on the side now but I appreciate the thought / compliment! Thanks.
      I'll get another day on the firepit next month which will then open up lots of smaller jobs I can do in the evenings but completion won't be any time soon - it gives me time to save up for cladding the walls etc. so no rush here even if I could. Hopefully done a while before the princess castle becomes a demand though haha! I hope you're enjoying the actual warmth this week!

    I'm in south Louisiana, USA. Have tried for years to find Gunnera plants, but to no avail. How do you English gardeners get your plants and how do you propagate them? Yours are so big and lush.

    • @groundedgarden1461
      @groundedgarden1461 2 месяца назад +1

      Same question, I know I'll never find it!

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  2 месяца назад

      Hi @anthonymartin6927 and @groundedgarden1461 - these plants are (/were) quite widely available over here through 'normal' garden centres, exotic plant specialists and aquatic plant suppliers but unfortunately most were actually the smaller and known invasive G. tinctoria. Finding the real deal, the bigger 'manicata' or as it's now most likely ' x cryptica' was tricky and my plant is actually a division of a huge plant at a very old garden so I suspect genes are a big part of the picture. They don't grow especially well from seed unless it's very fresh. The reason mine has grown so well this year is due to the mild temperatures and huge amount of rain we've had over the last 12 months, it's suited them down to the ground. I hope you can track one down soon!

    Is your gunnera planted directly in the ground ? If so, how do you keep them moist and prevent them from drying out ?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi, they are indeed. I water them during hot and dry spells but I suspect the shade from the overhanging cherry tree really helps shield them from wilting too much in the summer sun.

    Can you please update on your aloe Hercules?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  2 месяца назад

      Hi, I can indeed! It was overwintered in an unheated shed and came through just fine but took a long time to harden off and got badly sunburnt. It'll recover but overall it's not grown especially well for me - certainly not what I was expecting given the pedigree and hype around the plant. It is in a pot and last summer was especially cool though.
