A true hero. She makes me look at American cities with new eyes, and I ask myself why these cities are so ugly in so many ways.

Because of Jacobs' action, Lower Manhattan is still full of renovated old 4 story buildings full of wealthy people instead of high rises full of regular folks. The romantic view of neighborhoods was ultimately a bunch of nonsense.

Robert Moses must be constructing highways and bridges in hell for eternity.

put a cap on RR park ave line - bronx, 132 st -190 st.
    use land for affordable housing.
build on the long island sound " A florida keys style
overseas highway " . this will relieve the CBE

It's the law of unintended consequences. The Projects are a perfect example. There is one in Pittsburgh, my hometown. It was called Bedford Dwellings. It was the first Project in the entire nation. It failed miserably. They rebuilt it not long ago. Beautiful tree lined streets, two story dwellings. It's failing again already.Trash littered streets, drugs, crime. You can change what something looks like, but you can't change the people who live there, who are of the same low or no income diaspora that were there before. Jacobs is right. Even though the Bedford Project was first built 80 years ago, they repeated their mistake. The old saying that if it ain't broke, don't fix it still applies. Social engineering doesn't work. It never has and never will

NO ONE LIKES THE HARSH REALITIES !
DRACONIAN METHODS WILL CURE OR ELIMINATE ANY WHOM REFUSE TO CONFORM !
I CAN TAKE THE THEORY RIGHT OR LEFT.
I HAVE A DREAM " EFFICIENCY IN GOVERNMENT" ,WANT SOME OF WHAT I AM DRINKING ??

@@abcdef-kx2qt not really. Don't get why you're shouting either. I won't bite on the Kool Aide analogy either. Too many died with Jim Jones there. I don't get where you're coming from on Draconian either. Unless you mean the video. I agree as stated with the liberal projects or with developers like the GOP Moses in the video, who both destroy for the sake of a vision. Hitler had an efficient government before he started world war 2 by invading Poland. Yes efficiency of this kind is a dream. But to make it a reality is a nightmare that doesn't closely resemble it when people decide they know what's best for the many.

The insanity of our overcrowded freeways in every major city. People driving madly, faster, faster, more and more aggressive.
In many cities the predominance of very large vehicles... the most aggressive drivers use them to intimidate people in normal size cars.
Brute strength throwing its weight around.

A good docu spoiled by that weirdly reverential reading of Jacobs' own words.
