  • I'm repotting this collected Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) that I got from Connor for the first time. I was hoping to make this tree a root over rock planting?

100% correct choice of pot. It suits the tree exactly. A lovely tree Nigel.

Two weeks ago i repotted my crepe myrtles. I realized i have fully developed the "if it dies it dies" mentality for young trees when it comes to root pruning. I attribute this to watching your videos. It makes root pruning more approachable. Lucky for me crepe myrtles cant truly be killed lol.

I completely relate to your comment! I even hear his voice when making a hard decision about cutting something or not. As soon as I say, "and here I go", it happens 😂 there's no turning back.
I also say the mantra, "Nigel does it and his trees do great. Nigel does it and his trees do great." *Chop*

@Myhyperfixation when you start you think trees are so fragile. Probably doesn't help that the normal person things trees will die if you mess with the roots. I called a dude about grinding some cypress knees down in my lawn. He flat out told me grinding a knee down so I don't hit it with my mower will kill the tree and he wouldn't do it. His advice to me was don't mow near them. I have about 15 cypress on my property if I didn't mow around knees I would never mow at all lol.

I m watching every video you post, Nigel! Thanks! 🙏
Looking forward to seeing the baobabs being root pruned and repotted. I have 20 of them grown from seeds and I m too scared to root prune them, so I will wait for the master to do it first 😎🙏

Nice transformation. The new pot suits it. I’m giving a few of my trees a try in pond baskets this spring at repotting. A Hinoki Cypress , a jack pine, and a Japanese black pine. I’m really excited to see the results in the future. Thanks, keep growing

Good root system on the Thuja. Maybe the pond basket helped a bit?
I think you made the right choice with the pot. Looks great!

I think root over rock might still be possible for this tree. I could imagine a partial-root over rock planting: some of the outer roots draped over rocks, and the whole planting elevated with high soil.
Basically building a cliff rock formation around it and letting the tree grow over the edges.
It looks very nice in its current pot but I think the Rattlesnake Point vision is worth sticking with!

Maybe in the future it wil be an option. Smaller rocks can also be nested inbetween roots to give ilusion that there is more rock underneath.

V nice tree and an excellent choice of pot. Do you ever plant on slate or tile to promote root spread? And, is there a relationship between your approach to roots and your approach to your hair? (Just a bald guy asking.)

Planting on top of something flat not always gives good results.

Interesting that you purposely remove features that could be turned into jin which would (imo) make the tree more interesting. Any comment on that?

Nigel is not a big fan of jin.
