Modular synths are a logistical nightmare. I'm glad he isn't going to the unnecessary trouble. That said I don't care about playing anything that isn't modular.
Thanks for the video! Saw Radiohead last night and saw a photo of Johnny's setup and had lots of questions...like "why no oscillators?" And "what's the ring mod there for?" Thanks for answering all my questions!
The ring mod is used to make a hit hat when doing drum sounds with a synth. Think on the run for example, the hi hat sound is made with the CV of the sequencer as well as the noise going to a ring mod. THat's how you get a hi hat with a modular...
for this he use an rs800 so this but in another shape if you have exactly that it should sound the same as the studio or live one with the same module and same sound and settings and pattern change (because this guy found them and various other version is the same) so its kinda cool
even another guy did that exactly with the rs8000 and so it sound exactly the same idem for other ways and idem for all the other songs with various other instruments collegamenti and tech or trick with same settings and instruments so its the same
I don't own a Modular Synth, but I was wonder what each colored cord does. I noticed each one has different colors. I imagine its for each different synth installed on there. Could you possibly explain what they do?
Hello! The cords are simple 1/8" cables - essentially mono versions of the "aux" cables used with MP3 players. They're all identical, so I use the different colors to help visualize each distinct sound. For example, I used yellow cables to connect all of the synth modules that I used for the snare drum, but I could just have easily used red cables for the snare. Each module can have a variety of functions: some output sounds, others process sounds, and some simply send voltages to control other modules. Hope that this helps!
It is called a "eurorack" modular synthesizer. It is not really "DIY", because you can buy the modules from manufacturers and simply screw them into the case.
I would like to know if the wooden support was made by yourself. I want to start buying the basic modules (the same ones from this video) Do you recommend the Intellijel instead of Analog Systems? Thanks Dave for sharing. Rodrigo from Chile.
hi rodrigo! i'm sorry for the late reply. the wooden case is made by monorocket, but they are no longer available. there are many good module makers. currently i mostly use modules from Manhattan Analog, NonLinearCircuits, Frequency Central, etc. what is best depends on your goals... message me on instagram if you'd like to discuss!
Never used vcv, but just looking at the modules available you should have no trouble making something like this. All the sounds sources are made with simple modules: ADSRs, LFOs, VCFs, VCAs, and a noise source.
D K oh thanks man. Yes i mean looks pretty simple to make, but i don’t really know how to control the virtual synth through a real world thing, any ideas :(??? Thanks again, without this video i probably couldn’t figure out all of this stuff. Cheers :DD
it's just combining building blocks. if you learn the building blocks, you can make similar sounds with any modular or semi-modular synth. doepfer, korg ms20, vcv rack, etc. but i can't really support behringer, as their ceo uses his platform to promote antisemitism
Hello! So i am very new to modular synthesis. I use “VCV” and I am absolutely lost. I was wondering if there is any way you could make a tutorial on VCV? I have been trying to get this video, and attempt this on VCV,however I am LOST. Or you could make a patch on VCV and post a download link as a reply? Thank you SO MUCH!
Hello. I have the modules, but what are the knob settings for the sequencer? I have the sounds, hat, snare, and kick, but you didn't mention knob settings for the sequencer. I also don't understand how to trigger the beeps. Please help haha
cool custm mod, my buddy has been customizing and building up his too, and when we jam with his mod while i drum or play guitar over it it just adds that extra warmness to it, and has a kraut vibe...however, i think your explanations were dull and babbling, and this isnt really idioteque since all you did was just show the basic drum kick and hi hat with an added high pitch sound that doesnt even sound "exactly" like idioteque so it's kinda false advertising---and yes, the knob settings are crucial...either way, best to just make your own music, and you need to also understand that when radiohead do this stuff they loop it, and isolate things, and go backwards to do it piecemeal with added production, filters, programming etc, and when they play live all this modular stuff is run through optimizers and effects and other trickery-do's....radiohead's sound wont and cant be mimicked via tutorial...go play music and experiment and understand different processes cuz sound outputs, guitar tabs, drum notations, gear, and synth demos wont really give ppl the realistic picture of what goes into making and combining these sounds together through various stages of processes and experimentation
Rest assured, this is not my primary musical project. I just do these from time to time for fun. It seems like you guys make cool music, but I was sad not to see any on your channel. The patch that I'm copying here is more or less identical to the patch Jonny plays live (including knob positions), which is very different from the studio version. Jonny's live sound is also much thinner than the recording as it lacks distortion and other studio effects. ruclips.net/video/0RMdkEC4CKA/видео.html 66.media.tumblr.com/5ce7587408bdfba92d904a221028c58f/tumblr_inline_mlzab9DmuS1qa1wxx.png I thought beginners to modular synthesis would benefit from replicating a song that they know, learning how to create basic drum sounds along the way. no no i just come across as terse and id rather u exist and do what u do, i was just being a dick and attempting to clarify that there is no "way" or whatever that can be taught and learned to do what radiohead does, it's not like teaching tabs or doing a cover of redemption song...i was more so rgging on anyone who actually appraoches music that way or perceives radiohead as crystalized in this example as somewht naive yet on your end of things i have no qualms..and i dont have youtube channel for posting videos of me doing music because it seems trite and egocentric and childish, especially when i dont view myself as a musical authority to teach others through demo and sound bite and leave out multiple explanations as though i am some authority on whatever video demo i would be doing....i just play music for sake of playing music, i dont create facebook or twiiter or youtube or sound cloud pages in some sad attempt to get attention from strangers...i just play with friends and low key events and jams, and make beats and folk stuff with others, but mostly do psych and early electronnica style music so i dont really see how having a youtube channel is a measure of ability or catalogue or depth of understanding lol...but i digress
This guys philosophy would destroy everything good about youtube, lol. Let's all be thankful that kind people take time to share whatever they want for whatever reason, even if they actually believe they are an authority or superior or something. I would put 20 bucks on a bet that this poster has uncomfortable moments in his life from critical self judgement and is actually a good talented dude that has a good sense of humor.

I find this weird that Greenwood does this for Idioteque when on other songs he uses sample loops right from his laptop
What other songs tho?

Do you have a list of all the modules you're using in this video?
I've added a list to the description.
Surely this is all unnecessarily complicated - why don't they just use a drum machine?!
JoseWhon The hands-on nature of both sequencing and patching the sounds themselves in a Eurorack is unmatched.
