Robin Hood is a 1973 American animated musical adventure comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. Produced and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it is based on the English folktale "Robin Hood". Taking place in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, the story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John, and Robin Hood wins the hand of Maid Marian.

It's films like this that really remind me that, a movie doesn't have to be breathtaking all the time, just good. Movies like Robin Hood, The Aristocats, The Rescuers, etc. They were no Little Mermaids or Beauty and the Beasts, but they still had heart, they were still good despite not being quite so...large scale, they didn't need to be. And that's what I deeply appreciate about these older Disney films.
Btw, another good Disney film suggestion, Sleeping Beauty. One that pioneered some of the great story elements of modern fairy tales.
I totally agree with you on that! You don't always need super clean and "fancy" visiuals to make a good film, especially when you have characters who are super charming and really make the film wonderful.
omg I LOOOOVE Sleeping Beauty! It was one of my fav Disney films when I was a kid and I adore it so much! 😻 I can still react to it tho if you don't mind it not being a "first time" reaction
@@TheCatPrideCinema Robin Hood, Aladdin, Return of Jafar yea i said Return of Jafar, and Sword in the stone i dont care any bit what people say these 4 films just 4 are tied for the #1 spot best of all Disney films. This one it has humor each character is funny / interesting and cool and the story was really different unique which i heard saved Disney same as i think.. Sword in the stone. Musicals and visuals means little to me. Or has to have Robin Williams in it to be great. This adds humor, Sword in stone adds medieval and just a basic plot but great characters and humor mixed and adds also making the main character smarter and better due to Merlin tho also the Sugar and Spoon is best character tho same as Arthur and Merlin, and Return of Jafar i saw more of my Iagoo and with Aladdin tied cant have one without other. But return added Jafar to really showcase his genius evil plot and that, so all 4 is my fav with the original Aladdin then Sleeping beauty / Aladdin and the King of Thieves 2nd. In that Fauna is my favorite character the green fairy and one of the top A tier greatest Disney characters of all time. And so all know LIon King is a D that is all and Alice in Wonderland is the lowest of D so 2nd to last. Of the original Disney. The new only Toy STory 1 and 2 and cars 1 ad Monsters Inc, Shriek 1 is just above Allice in WOnderland and Lion KIng otherwise every other is below it especially after 2000s BUt Emperors new groove.
Emperor's New Groove, Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatias... Oh, and the Black Cauldron! This one it's saddly underrated but I think it deserves a chance
I've seen them all exept for the Black Cauldron but ut's on the list 😋😋😋
Some football teams need to hire Lady Cluck as Offensive Coordinator man. Always loved that part.
haha omg they really do 😹
The voice of the sheriff is also the voice of Chief on The Fox and the Hound.
yes! haha love that XD
@@TheCatPrideCinema I've seen that actor in a couple of live action roles, it's surreal hearing that voice come out of a real person.🤣
@@TheCatPrideCinema He was also in "Back to the Future Part III" as one of the barflies in the saloon.
The sketchy line style animation is the result of the “dark ages” of Disney where the budgets were lower for animation because disney started experimenting with more kid friendly live action films
So they animated like this to cut costs and they sometimes had to reuse animation and characters or designs from past films, which is why you might recognize so many. They even have the same voice actors.
Turned out well in the end because they have their own charm and people love them so much now but these movies for the most part, werent always hits back then. But the character acting, the movement and shapes are so gorgeous. They don’t make em like they used to that’s for sure. An entire generation of incredibly talented and dedicated artists.
you mean to tell me this was a lower-budget film?? 🙀 oh dang! I mean I'm impressed they did so well with a lower budget haha
I agree, they don't make them like they used to which is sad... especially the characters in general were just more interesting in my opinion than some of the more modern Disney films
this one and 'the sword in the stone' were two of my favourites as a kid
omg that's another film I want to react to for the channel 😻😻😻
Where my love for redheads began
Ditto
The opening song had a come back a while back, just speed it up and raise the pitch and you have The Hamster Dance.
omg... I know The Hamster Dance! It's based on the opening song of Robin Hood?? wooow hahaha that's awesome 😹
He was called Robin Hood because robin is an old English word for red. Like how the bird is called a robin after its red chest and belly. So Robin Hood means "red hood", which was a popular accessory for male attire in the period, for an outlaw figure - who would try and blend in whenever possible - it created a distinct, challenging appearance. Whether Robin Hood as described in the folklore really existed is up for debate, there are a few people who'd fit as the basis for the stories.
Also fun fact: the real reason why Prince John upped the taxation so much wasn't for personal greed. His brother Richard was taken hostage by the Austrian Habsburg family while returning from the Crusade, and Prince John was raising the money to free his brother. This also indirectly led to England losing Normandy as an offshore territory, which earned him the nickname John the Landless.
Fun fact 2:What you dubbed Prince John's PJs are actually his undergarments :D
ohhh wow! that's so interesting! Thank you so much for the fun facts! 😻 Learned a lot today 😋😋😋😋
(also, "undergarments" was my third guess in my head but I thought it was something more specific haha so thank you 😹)
@@balintkovacs4089 It’s curious how Disney can take certain figures of history, and make them far more villainous than they actually were. Don’t get me wrong, the upping of taxes was still a butthole thing to do to the citizens, but he at least had comparatively sympathetic reasons for doing so.
@@domidium Sympathetic from whos perspective? Do remember that at this time, the common populace of England was still very much Saxon and Norse in majority. The Norman ruling class were foreign invaders to them. Robin Hood was as much a mythified figure for the Saxon-Norman opposition as King Arthur was for the Celtic-Saxon opposition a few centuries prior. (King Arthur being the side of the Celts)
@@TheCatPrideCinema I mean, until the recent past shirts too very considered part of a man's underwear, hence why it was looked down on by the middle and upper class if a man, even at home, was only in his shirt from the waist up.
@domidium the Robin Hood myths existed long before Disney and Prince John had been demonized in them as well
he's not a parent yet. he's safe in disney films :D
hahahaha
Jungle Book came first, and while yes, they reused a ton of material when making Robin Hood, this is still in my top 3 Disney animated movies. The voice acting and casting are, PERFECT!!!, the music is phenomenal, with Love sung by Nancy Adams stealing the show, and just in general it's a really fun film.
Noice 🤘 yeah this film is really good! and I agree the chasting is perfect! 😻
I’m surprised no one has commented about the alternate ending where Robin Hood didn’t make it without injury after the fire and was taken to the church to recover with maid Marian praying for him and then prince John shows up with a knife to kill Robin Hood and then he is stopped by king Richard who came back and forced him to give the crown back.
That’s a real alternative ending that never made it to the finale cut of the film. But there is a animatic for it out there that Disney made and released for the anniversary dvd of the film. Just a little fun fact.
omg I just watched Nostalgic Crtic's video of the this movie and he mentioned that alt ending! 🙀
that's cool that there is a release of that version! Even if it is just for the DVD but that's still cool!
Peter Ustinov played in a number of movies as the detective Hercule Poirot
Yes, Pat Buttram (the sheriff) was indeed Napoleon. But also Chief in Fox and the Hound and Luke, the swamp mouse with self-made liquor from The Rescuers.
I haven't seen The Rescures haha but yeah that's cool he also played Chief in Fox and the Hound
@@TheCatPrideCinema I´m sure you eventually react to it. And me mentioning it people will rave over doing the sequel as well. ^^
Also I love Lady Cluck, Little John, Prince John and Hiss 😂
Just the absolute mockery of Prince John!
hahaha yeah the characters are fabulous! 😻
If you want a couple of underrated Disney Animation gems:
- The Great Mouse Detective (1986) : A musical adaptation of a children's book series based on Sherlock Holmes
- Oliver & Company (1988) : A musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist"
They were the last two movies released before the official "Disney Renaissance" in 1989 with The Little Mermaid
So they are always overlooked, but still definitely worth it because all of the elements of the Renaissance are clearly starting to form
The Great Mouse Detective is on my list and I plan on watching it soon for the channel 😋
omg Oliver & Company is soooo good! I cry at least twice every time I watch it haha I ADORE it! 😻
I do agree that at least Oliver & Company is super underrated and definitely needs more hype 😻
@@TheCatPrideCinema I won't spoil anything, but Great Mouse Detective has my favorite Disney villain performance in legendary horror actor, Vincent Price
You can definitely see how Jeremy Irons took a few notes from him a few years later to play Scar in The Lion King, with how he manages to flamboyantly chew the scenery with his voice acting
Great mouse detective is a great movie. As a classically trained 2D animator I still frame ramen frames and just marvel how each drawing is marvelously designed to lead your eye to the action. If you know you know. It’s great yet forgotten movie.
There's a rumor that Mel Blanc auditioned for the role as Prince John, but he either didn't get the part or he turned it down because people would've recognize his voices from Looney Tunes.
The actor who voiced the Sheriff was, Pat Buttram. He voiced other Disney characters and he was in Back To The Future Part III as one the prospectors and he was even a guest star on The Munsters in 1965. Unfortunately he passed away in the late 90s
oh really? haha that's interesting 😹
aww that's ashame that he passed away... his voice is so iconic!
I love to think Skippy is the one going to take on Robin's mantle now that him and Maid Marian are going to be parents. And that he's sort of an "avatar" for the public to do the same: we can do better for us and the others. We might not be perfect, just like Robin (which still is a th1ef and an outl4w), but just like him we can do the best we can to improve things. Even better, if we can do it with a smile on our face.
My absolute favorite part of the movie is when he's gushing over for Marian, and talking about his doubts about rekindling a relationship with her: they are in love with each other, but he wants to be responsible. And as long as he has taken this risky and questionable path, he wouldn't like to take her down with him. To be honest, they still are my favorite fictional couple 😊😊; and they still are expecially since their relationship is realistic and well-grounded.
haha yeah that was cute that Skippy went with them
I liek your take on the film! and I agree as well, all we can do is our best.
I also agree that they're a pretty solid couple. I liked that they had history and they knew eachother when they were kids. Obviously as we age, we tend to grow and sometimes grow apart but I like that they come back together. It's refreshing to see in a classic Disney film haha
I love how it gone kinda in an old west direction with the voice acting-- Pat Buttram (the sherrif) was Mr Haney in Green Acres, George Lindsey (trigger) was Goober on Andy Griffin, Ken Curtis (Nutsy) was Cletus on Gun Smoke, Andy Devine was Roy Rogers' sidekick in a lot of his westerns.
From what i understand, the original intention was to adapt some of the Reynard the Fox tales but stuff happened like it often does.
yeah I agree I love the western vibes they went for haha I think it added more charm and just made it funnier as well haha
Ironically the real life King John cared very little for his mother Eleanor and his brother Richard couldn't care less about England nor how John ran it.
oh dang 😹 well we know Disney likes to take certain "artistic liberties" 😹
Yep Richard was King of England for 10 years and during his reign he spent a total of 6 months in England, and often said he'd "Sell London if I could find a buyer".
Fun fact: even as a kid i wonderred "What's pulling the chariot in the last shot?" Nobody's riding horses in the cartoon, as that'd raise a lot of sentient animal questions haha.
haha yeah that's a good point 😹
This movie is probably one of the more notorious of Disney Films to re-use animation. Some animation shots, as you noticed, were direct re-uses from the film in a different background. The others were taking existing animation from elsewhere (jungle book, aristocats, snow white) and basically using them like rotoscoping an animating other characters on top of them. It was supposed to save time in planning out the motion of dances and such, but it didn't end up being as labor-saving as they had hoped, so the technique was abandoned.
yeah! I saw afterwards that they took some scenes from Jungle Book haha
I mean that totally makes sense that they would reuse scenes to save time but I didn't know it was as effective as it should've been 😅 that must've been frustrating
Disney's Robin Hood, Jungle Book, and The Fox and the Hound... add in all the Bluth animated films and you have my childhood
Love it 🤘 All of these films are fabulous 😻😻😻
Lady Cluck dodging the Rhino Linebackers was great, adored Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, etc. Prince John and hilariously pathetic, I use 'Mother always did like Richard best...' at times when see things to give a random quote that only those that seen it would know. Love it when he sucks his thumb too.
The Sheriff is hilarious too but just awful ain't he? Lol, I mean, steals from a cripple and a birthbay boy let alone from the church itself later.
This alongside a certain other movie and Down Under my favs. Think Beauty & the Beast prob fav out of princess ones, but Little Mermaid and Aladdin great too alongside Mulan.
hahaha yeah Lady Cluck is the MVP! 🤘 haha love that you quote the movie
The Sheriff is.... special.... awful "person" but a very well made character so Iget what you mean lol
Down Under was a good one that's for sure! It'll be up on the channel soon 😋
I LOOOOVE Mulan! I rewatch it every now and again haha
@@TheCatPrideCinema Looking forward to it, partially why subscribed! Shame didn't get a 3rd rescuers, I get why we didn't since Bianca's VA died not long after Down Under came out, but still... Imagine their next mission coming in during their wedding or most likely them having to spend their honeymoon helping some other poor kid.
It's funny you mentionned that Sir Hiss looks like Kaa because in France, they're voiced by the same guy 😂
This guy is considered as the boss of the french Disney voice acting (60 years of career). RIP Roger Carel
In the movies you saw on your channel, he's the french voice of Roquefort and Lafayette in " The Aristocats " too, and the woodpecker in " The Fox and the Hound " but count by himself a lot of Disney characters of my childhood (born in 1993).
Still speaking about the voices in french :
Little John has the same voice actor than Baloo in " The Jungle Book " and Thomas O'Malley in " The Aristocats "
the King Richard has the same one than Shere Khan the tiger and the Colonel Hathi (The Jungle Book)
The voice actresses of Skippy's sisters are sisters in real life
omg really? haha love that in France Kaa and Sir Hiss were voiced by the same guy 😹
and in general how there are many characters with the same voice actors in French
@TheCatPrideCinema trust me, Roger Carel is behind so much characters that I can't named all (the list is very long)
As a 70s kid, I saw this when I came out. It's safe to say that some of us had a crush on a fox and were very confused.
hahaha love it 😹 tbf I can totally see why! She's a cutie 😻
The narrator rooster was voiced by Roger Miller, a country singer. He was also the narrator for Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey, one of the many stop-motion Christmas specials that Rankin-Bass made like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. It's a pretty good special I'd recommend reacting to at Christmas time if you have the time to do so since you said you already have a long list of films you want to watch.
Oh, that's pretty cool! Thank you for the info 😋
I don't usually watch Christmas-themed films (not really my thing haha) but thank you for the recommendations! I'll consider them 😋 (I think I also know some of the songs or something from pop culture references and things like that haha)
Honestly, one of my absolute favorite films (Disney and non-Disney) for its charm, comedy, and music. It has such a place in my heart having grown up watching it so much that my parents avoided watching it themselves for a while (kinda obsessed with it growing up along with the Three Caballeros, Peter Pan, and Aladdin).
It really is a great film! Love that it's your favourite movie 😋😋😋
that's hilarious your parents avoided it for a bit 😹
@@TheCatPrideCinema Mom still won't watch Three Caballeros, admittedly 🤣🤣 But she's warmed up to the others.
My favorite Disney movies growing up were Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, and Oliver and Company
Disney's better times. When movies were watchable for fun and not the political/social message.
Agreeeeeeeed!! I miss these types of films 😿
One of my iconic cartoon movies growing up
I can see why! It's so fun :D
I first Saw Disney's Robin Hood (1973) as a rerelease to theaters in 1982. It was apart of Disney's Dark-Age. Phil Harris The voice of Little John, and Baloo from The Jungle Book (1967) his name is Robin Hood because his name is Robert. Although it is common to think it's because he's robbing the rich. Hubcaps are covers, The wheel falling off was for comedy, John in his Long John's, Pat Buttram is The Sherriff, he was Napoleon in The Aristocats (1970) He was in Back To the Future III as one of the old timers, and he died in 1994, the same year as John Candy. Robin Hood is Zootopia in the past. First Robin Hood, then Nick Wilde took over. Zootopia and Robin Hood are a shared universe, case in point, King Richard the Lion Hearted is a Lion, And then there's Mayor Lionheart of Zootopia. and ten there's the scale of the animals in both films. 16:29 Friar Tuck must be a Franciscan Friar, he's got the appetite of a Franciscan. Chutney is a Condiment, like Cranberry Sauce, People eat it with lamb, like Mint Jelly. 22:56 Classic Disney Proposing in the middle of a battle just like Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. 24:32 Yes Sam scene as 15:46 just different lighting. Kaa came first.
Oooo that must've been so awesome to see this film in theaters!
and thank you for sharing all of this information! 🙏😻
@@TheCatPrideCinema Yeah especially when I was 6 years old, I saw Bambi in 1981, That was awesome.
this is proper childhood
"Wait a minute, there's a law against robbing Royalty."
There's a law against robbing EVERYONE lol
😹😹😹
I was blown away when I realised Sir Hiss was voiced by Terry-Thomas. His performance in this is completely different from his usual fair.
For some of Terry-Thomas's best comedy performances I'd recommend watching Those Magnificent Men in There Flying Machine (1965) and its sequel Monte Carlo or Bust (know in the USA as Those Daring Young Men in There Jaunty Jalopies).
I see that the guy has been in a lot of films 😸
Thank you for the recommendations 🤘 I'll add them to the list 😋😋😋
And Prince John is voiced by Peter Ustinov, mostly known as playing Hercule Poirot from the late 1970's to the mid 1980's
10:31 "Isn't that the chief?"
Close! He's voiced by Pat Buttram who played Chief in The Fox and the Hound.
King Richard was the older brother of Prince John, he went to fight in the crusades
that's cool they added that detail into the film
This is my favourite Disney film of all time 🥰 and I admittedly have an unhealthy obsession with Prince John 😅 he’s so silly 😂
Love that! 😋
hahaha I can see why you like Prince John 😹
I think this will always be my favorite movie since a little kid. Still have my og vcr tape
love that! I wish I had my VHS tapes... I kept my DVD's so I'm holding on to those ones haha
I always liked the unexplained mixture of British and American accents, particularly Texan and New York accents in this very British story.
hahaha yeah it makes no sense but it's great nonetheless 😹
32:36 funnily enough i would have screamed like that john did, considering Eleanor of Aquitaine's castle in England that she spent most of her time at and supposedly helped developed the domestic buildings would be Windsor Castle
13:17 Skippy shoots the arrow
It soars through the air
It hits Maid Marion
Movie ends
*Rolls Credits*
18:31 "what are you doing Hiss?"
He's making the best of "hiss"elf
I'll leave now.....
hahahaha love it 😹😹😹 that made me laugh so thank you for that 😹
8:34 this was a crazy era of Disney movies when they went from hand inked cells to xerox cells directly from the drawings. O agree as an animator that it looks amazing to see the craft put in by the artists. Sword in the Stone, jungle book, this movie, 101 Dalmatians and onward until their CAPS system in the late 80’s….. ( yes I’m an animation nerd , professional and amateur Disney historian 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣) these xeroxed cell films show process and craft and I love the roughness
Yeah I really enjoy this style of animation, I think it looks so good!
haha we love the nerds 😋🤘 also love the Disney historian addition 😹
That whistle theme is a earworm. In sort of a good way
Edit: though robin hood is fine in the end. Though the original idea is robin hood gets captured and in prison to be kicked off by the prince but king Richard returns to stop the prince and free robin hood. The source is nostalgia critics review
Technically, the original storyboards showcased Robin being injured and being brought to the church where Marion would tend to him. Prince John will follow and try to kill him but King Richard would return right then to confront Prince John and take back his kingdom.
I have watched the alt ending from Nostalgic Critic as well haha It's an interesting ending and I think would've been pretty powerful
@@TheCatPrideCinema I agree, it's important to have a powerful ending even if it's dark
4:40 that voice is the voice of Baloo from Disney's The Jungle Book. Same with Sir Hiss.
omg yes!! I thought it was him while I was editing the vidoe haha 😹 thank you for the confirmation! 😋
But I had nooo idea he also voiced Sir Hiss!!! that's awesome!
@@TheCatPrideCinema lol sorry my post wasn't clear. he didn't voice both, i meant to say that both actors came back for Robin Hood
Jungle book, aristocats, Robin Hood were done by the same animation team
Oohh I see! That explains a lot haha
@@TheCatPrideCinema Maid Marian's dance part is from " Snow-White and the seven dwarfs "
The art style is Xerox animation. It started in the early 60s and was used for quite a while for cost cutting. Instead of tracing drawings onto animation cels by hand, the drawings were scanned directly onto to them. That’s why the lines look so scratchy.
101 Dalmatians, Sword in the Stone, Jungle Book, and the Aristocats are many along with this film that used this style until we reached digital hand animation techniques in the late 80s and early 90s.
omg that's genius! I love that! Thank you for the info 😋😋😋
7:00 depends on which movie was made first 😂
Apparently Jungle Book was released first 😹
The Cat Pride Cinema This was one of my favorite movies as a child, it was also one my dad's favorites, he always whistled the main theme.
I can see why! It's a fun film and the main theme is def catchy haha
to be clear, this is the standard all Robin Hood movies are judged against because this is the best one. every Disney film from this era should come with an emotional trigger warning somewhere. they were all classics but jesus, most of them tore your heart out and showed it to you for shits and giggles.
I can see why it's the best one tbf lol
yeah some of the things they had were pretty dark that's for sure (partially why I personally enjoy them a lot haha)
4:24 Jungle Book and Aristocats, there’s more, but I don’t remember
The tax collector took your birthday present? Here, have a deadly weapon.
This film is surprisingly red state.
hahahaha best birthday gift ever 😹
This is plain cr1minal recruiting happening under our eyes... and I just like this movie for it too: it forces you for the first time to deal with morally gray heroes too. It's just "blood and s**t" (as former Italian politician Salvatore Formica put it), and unfortunately life most often plays out like that and we must get to compromises.
in real history King Richard (the lion heart) had a brother Prince John (who was illegitimate )
Ohhh scandal 😹 I'll have to look into the history of it tbf
Not True! John was just as legitimate as his brothers, Richard, Henry and Geoffrey, Being the youngest John missed out on the dividing of his father's territory. Henry was to be King of England, Geoffrey was to be Duke of Normandy and Anjou and Richard was to be the Duke of Aquitaine (his mother's land). John was not awarded anything and gained the nickname "Lackland". Both Henry and Geoffrey died young so Richard became King and spent about 6 weeks of his 10 year reign in England, more interested in his crusade and then shoring up his lands in France where he died in 1199. Richard had no children, so John became king. Richard is considered a "Good" King because of the Crusade, yet he allowed (some say actively encouraged) a massacre of Jews in the city of York - but, as the history of England, at that time was chronicled by the Church he was lionized. John reigned from 1199 to 1216 and whilst not as black as he's often painted (the Church didn't like him because he raised taxes on them), he was a pretty rotten king; stubborn, vain, a useless soldier who lost most of the French territory his father and ancestors had ruled over, and unnecessarily cruel - he was no worse than his father, his brother and his son. Also note how the British voice actors are the only ones to pronounce Robin Hood correctly - the Americans say it as if it's all one word - "Robinhood".
Jungle Book, Robin Hood were my favorites as a kid.
The one almist impossible to find now is Song of the South.
But I got it on VHS.
Jungle Book was awesome! 😻
aww I miss my VHS's 😿 feel sad that I got rid of them once I got DVD haha at least I still have a lot of my DVDs 😹
Absolutely delightful 😊
12:40 " a fox and a rabbit" yeah uh you will see that again if you watch zootopia except the fight crime 😂
hahaha I love Zootopia 😹
The Jungle Book released in '67, this film released in '73.

Love that :D Thank you for the info 😋
Yeah, Robin hood took animations from both Jungle Book and The Aristocats since they weren't as big films Disney was putting all their bets on, but they're still great movies. Little John was voiced by Baloo's voice actor as well.
I do miss the hand-drawn animations of the past movies, I know it was grueling, tiring work compared to 3D animation nowadays that you can make a model of and go from there, but I just feel the moment Disney abandoned this kind of style is when they started to go down this road of their current bad reputation.
EVERYONE says they miss that scratchy drawn style... but unless people start paying for theatre tickets to go see them, like people COULD have with Frog or Pooh in the 2010's-11's, they won't spend money on it. OR even just start giving them high subscription numbers if they went straight to streaming. The frustrating part is it's like a THIRD that cost of CGI...
Ah my childhood…

I can see why you would think that haha
I miss 2D animation that’s isn’t perfect line art. You could still get that with digital 2D but when 2D went digital, they cleaned up all the lines.
I wanted to be an animator but decided against it. But I still hold animation as a medium for story telling and as an art in very high regard! While I like 3D films, I prefer 2D. I think both have a place. I’m not exactly the biggest fan of cell shading in the way it’s usually implemented. I like Into The Spider Verse and its use there. I think it also has a place, but I don’t really like that they are using it to do this sorta 2D esk animation to cost cut. It feels like an imposter.
I think it’s one thing if it’s a creative choice vs using doing it to save money.
My favorite Disney films that aren’t from the classic era are Tarzan, Atlantis, Treasure Planet and Hunchback of Notre Dame. If you haven’t seen them, I highly recommend them. People really slept on Atlantis and Treasure Planet. Now that people have actually seen them, they have a cult following. They didn’t do very well in theaters because they were more older kid oriented films and they didn’t know how to properly market them, since Disney’s main demographic is young kids and marketing to them to get their parents to take them to see the movie and buy the toys.
Best soundtrack is Tarzan.
I also suggest Inside Out, Elemental and both Frozen films if you haven’t seen them.
Just checked, you did treasure planet!
Also new subscriber 🎃
yeah I miss the scratchy 2D line art in these films, I'm glad I was able to watch some of these classics for the first time and really enjoy the line art 😻
That's so cool you wanted to be an animater! That's so cool! What made you decide against it?
Oooo yesss! I've seen all of them! 😻 (excluding Elemental which I really want to watch for this channel 😋 and I haven't seen the newest Inside Out yet haha)
Tarzan is a MASTERPIECE and Atlantis and Treasure Planet are soooo underrated! 😻
omg thank you for the sub! Welcome aboard! 😻
@@TheCatPrideCinema I’m so glad you’ve seen and enjoyed them!
I decided against being an animator because I used drawing as a coping mechanism to get through school. Most people are bullied by their peers but that wasn’t my experience. For me it was my teachers and the administration my entire school career. I was quiet and non disruptive but being a student with needs makes extra work for teachers and they hate it and would let me know so. It got bad enough that my family had to call a state advocate. I was a learning center student so there’s specific laws they have to follow that they weren’t necessarily not including saying horrible things to me, like telling me to quit school. The advocate is a big deal because if the school doesn’t improve, they can lose accreditation and funding. For me, drawing was almost like a diary but it also helped me focus in class. I was particular on who I’d let see it, mainly friends but also teachers and other students because I had too since much of it was for art class. But at home, I’d show no one. It wasn’t anything bad or anything, but because I had been judged so much by my family and they were always putting down my dreams, I didn’t want them involved in something that was helping me cope and that I thought of doing as a job. Further, I’m extremely shy and a perfectionist. It sounds dumb but I think most people understand this, I couldn’t stand it when people would say my work was good! I’d respond with a “thanks” or something but internally that’s not really how I felt. Maybe it was just due to the circumstances of which I was drawing under. But mainly it was because I can see every mistake I made and couldn’t figure out how to fix it or realized it too late. I also struggle to draw something more than once. My main thing was anime as the character designs are more involved. I was also right to keep my family out of it because later they said exactly what I thought they would.
I decided upon reflection that turning hobby used as a coping mechanism is probably a bad idea for a job. And given the nature of my perfectionism, it’s also probably a bad idea. Being a perfectionist is a good thing because it allows you to see the things you need to work on, but it’s possible to take that perfectionist mindset too far. It can make you very self toxic and over critical of yourself to the point of frustration.
I actually haven’t drawn much in about a decade. I can still do it, but I’ve lost a lot of technique and some visual and muscle memory. Things still turn out alright, but would have been better 15 yrs ago. I still have my old sketch books and a new Wacom tablet, but I can’t bring myself to draw as much as I use to.
But when I’m watching an animated film, especially Disney Pixar, I’m always impressed by the textures they are able to add to clothing and skin now. Or in Frozen 2 and upcoming Moana 2, the quality and lifelikeness of water and the sand. And in anime, the backgrounds and the amount of detail they’ve taken from real life areas of cities. I find animated films make me more emotional than real life films. No better example than Grave of the Fireflies.
Even with the ugly sonic for the initial real life film ad, I knew people who were dunking on it and while it DEFINITELY deserved the criticism, I also felt bad for the animators because I know they spent countless hours on designing and animating that. The development of fury animals in 3D is painstaking. Luckily the internet also had their back, and did their own designs to help them out.
But yeah, this is the general reason. It’s also really difficult to become a Disney animator, which is where I would have wanted to be. And I guess, there’s also the side that is not wanting to be told what to make but creating your own thing. It’s totally possible but extraordinarily beyond difficult!
