I tried this recipe today, EXACTLY as described by M. Laura Vitale. My opinion? It WAS as delicious as Laura says it is. Adding 1/2 cup of red wine makes all the difference: this is what gives it that superb taste. My thanks to Laura for sharing her excellent recipe with us.
I grew up in the Chicago suburbs. Italian beef and sausage were the norm. Never seen them cooked like this. Going to give it a try, they look fabulous!
I cook my sausages, sweet and mild, on the grill first, while softening the onions & green & red peppers at the same time. Once they are both almost finished, I throw them together with a little marinara & saute for a few minutes to finish cooking. Don't usually put cheese on them at all. Like she said in the beginning of the video, this is how her family does it and my NJ Italian family did it differently. (my method except they fried the sausage instead of grilling it) Grill it. you will love it.
This is AMAZING! I used cranberry juice instead of red wine because it was all I had on hand. My favorite touch is the basil at the end. OMG! I make this all the time now. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible meal.
I love watching this girl cook! That sandwich looked amazing! Grew up near am Italian neighborhood and love the memories of great food. Gotta try this sandwich.
Just cook good food at home and avoid fast (junk) food at all cost, and you'll like your waistline much better. Laura, thanks for the inspiration that you give in your many recipes!
Just tried this recipe last evening for my wife and I. It was outstanding. We used a mix of sweet and hot sausage. The sausage came out so crispy, and the red wine added a nice sweetness to the peppers and onions. The one additional thing I did was toasted the Italian bread. Yummy !!
Laura, You are so cute I could adopt you as an honorary granddaughter! You remind me of a favorite cousin, with your cooking like her mother. But what's better, after nearly 60 years of cooking sausage and peppers, your method grabbed me for the cutting the sausages in half before frying them. I figured out why, and what you meant by crispiness, which doesn't stay crisp during the rest of the process, but is critical to the final flavor. It's the increase in umami, or faun, that adds more flavor than what you would normally get with keeping them whole. Also I like the shorter cook time involved because of the way it leaves the veggies still a tad crunchy. But two things I like half green pepper, one because it's the flag color which is tradition, just like serving it with bread, or noodles or potatoes are the white. Anyway I cooked it your way sans the red wine (I used a bit of water and the juices from the vegies after I added garlic and put the sausage back and only gave everything 20 minutes more cooking with a lid on it. It blew me away but I did add marinara to the sandwich with the peppers and onions . Thanks for the video.
I made this but without the italian seasoning, I was always taught by my italian friends that if you use any oregano at all to throw it in when the dish is done cooking otherwise the oregano gives off a bitter taste if coooked. Its great without the italian seasoning, I did do the basil, can't wait until tonight to eat it! YUMMERS.
I've done this recipe several times now. It is the second best sandwich I've ever had. I really, really like Ruebens-- which I'll bet you have an OUTSTANDING recipe for-- don't hold out on us, girl! ^_^
Wowzers! I made this tonight and what a difference the wine makes on these sausage and peppers. I used green pepper cause that's what I had in hand. My go to recipe for now on!
delicioso! I usually just pop mine right in the oven super simple style but my nonna used to make it like this somethings and also similar to your way! one of my favorite sandwich
I can almost smell this recipe! The Italian side of my family made it the same way, except for the wine. Love your mom's addition! Also, like your use or the turkey sausage.
I have to tell you i made this a few minutes ago, and my husband doesnt eat onions or pepper and HE EAT the wholeeeee thing, he loves it!!!!! So I do. Thank you Laura!!!!
FUN FACT: A clip of this episode appeared in the Jan 25 2011 episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central - You can find it at their website it appears about 2:25 into the show!
Have you ever thought about putting butter on the buns and throwing them on a skillet/grill to brown them and rubbing the rolls with a fresh piece of garlic ? I bet that would kick it up another notch but that looks soooooooo good as it is.
Yum!!!!!! You are awesome at making cooking videos!!!! I come back to this video when I make these. They come out as the tastiest thing that I ever ate 😀
This looks like such a delicious recipe, Laura. I will definitely be making this one - never thought of using wine - yum! My dad's family is from a little village in Abruzzo. Can't wait to visit!
That dish looked awesome Laura...making it today! If I may also add with all due respect, you have the cutest voice, I think I watch you're videos as much for you're accent as I do the great recipes.
Oh, that is OUTSTANDING! The only problem I had is the sausage really curled up on me. The links were already kinda curved, so that might be why. But it made it kinda hard to get the pieces on the roll evenly.
I love how you say your name at the begining of your vids, "Hi i'm Laura Vitale" I just love that part, I don't know why (i'm not a stalker I promise) LOL & I always make sure I check out every video posted. Even if I don't cook it. Glad I found your channel.
I literally just finished my sandwich. I used pork sweet Italian and kept everything else the same. I also used a sweet red wine and I tell you that was the key to everything. I've never had a sandwich so good.
Making it now but using green and red pepper, yellow onion, 3 cloves garlic, red potatoes the small ones, sweet sausage. Dry parsley and oregano as well as pepper and salt.
Ohh yeah !! I had 2 sausages left over uncooked and i plan to cook those tonight and throw it on a french roll with bell pepper, onion, tomato sauce and some fresh parm -=) I can't wait
I literally just made this and it is incredible. Because of cutting them in half the onions and peppers got more flavors from the sausage. I wish I could post a picture but I used red, yellow and green pepper in mine for a better rounder taste. Nice job......Hope I dont get called racist or whatever in this PC world, but are you Italian? Your mother, grandmother? If inappropriate then ignore.
hey alina im a muslima as well and i have the same problem with her recipes .. so for red wine use beef stock and for white wine use chicken stock.. hope that helps!!! :)

Laura is the best. I’ve made this, if great.
luv Italian food
easy and delicious
Very fast and very good recipe
I made this but put it over spaghetti instead of rolls, and it was awesome.
I cook the pork sausage on the grill with hickory chips, and the peppers and onions don't meet till on the bread.
I like this alot thanks for this & am gonna try it. Two thumbs up.
I’m drooling!
Looks delicious, can’t wait to try! Thanks. 😍❤️💥👍🏼😋
It's an awesome recipe. Just a tip: DON'T use metal tongs in a nonstick pan unless you want to buy new pans every few years.
THE WINE MADE THIS SOO GOOD
I literally just finished my sandwich. I used pork sweet Italian and kept everything else the same. I also used a sweet red wine and I tell you that was the key to everything. I've never had a sandwich so good.

I have to try this!
So many people don't cook the vegies enough. This looks good.
Thanks mama, I'm going to try this while camping in my cast iron skillet!
Why would it be racist to ask someone if they are Italian?
Of course she's Italian. Her features and mannerisms plus she always mentions how her family members cook italian dishes. about
Deplorable Snowcloud Because liberals have posioned all human interactions with their persecution of thought crimes.
Green peppers? No dude.
Take your politics elsewhere Trumpy.
