I watched this with my friend and we bursted in laughter at the same time when we saw the scene at 1:17, the first episode was crazy and the drop in animation quality in the second episode was noticeable from the start. I just hope the last two episodes won't be like this.
I feel like they fucked up by making the first episode so insanely animated. Anime productions don't need that much of FPS, which allows them to give more detail to the caracters and give more budget to the most important scenes. Watch any anime and you will find how some momments have little to no animation (Evangelion has entire scenes that are just stillshots, and battles that are very well animated). We dont need to get an incedible top tier animation for kirie just...Walking. However, we can split the money used in that to make some decent animation in the less important parts and keep the best animation for the disturbing moments. Even Junji Ito does it. He uses a more simple, clean artstyle in the less tense moments, and he reserves the best of his work for the horrific moments
The main reason why the rest of the show looked horrible as opposed to episode 1 is because the original studio and director were fired and replaced with a crappy hentai studio. Plus the budget cuts.
Those animes usually have animation that’s stretched over at least 12 episodes… sometimes more if there are multiple seasons. This was only 4. It wasn’t supposed to be like ‘just any anime’. The manga are awesome on their own, but if you want to see Junji Ito’s work in that way, it’s readily available already. The adaptation was meant to go above and beyond. So even people who’d already seen all of his work could be wowed again. Now it’s just really depressing.
In mi opinions, the producers realized that the first episode was too expensive so they cut the budget for the rest but didn't change the air date. The artists had to work with what they had to release it on time. Still it's weird how such a miscalculation could have happened, they blew most of the budget on episode one. Aren't these things discussed before starting the production?
So the rest of the series is done in the same poor quality as episode 2?? We waited 5 freaking years for this. Oh the bitter taste of disappointment...at least we had one beautiful episode.
@@Sikanda. the pacing isn't a disaster if you compare it to the manga It's an anthology and stacking the stories is the only way to really do it, unless you want 3-4 stories back to back that don't really connect. Stacking the stories by location, such as combining Shuichi's mom's death with the pregnant women, is a smart way to do it Plus, Junji Ito's stories are rather fast paced. They don't pull punches and a lot happens on every page basically. If they went slow (as most horror media goes), it wouldn't feel like the manga and would kinda betray the rapid fire of horror that Uzumaki is Just because something is fast paced and densely packed doesn't make it paced badly. There's enough time for the stories to unfold without dragging
@@juannaym8488 I respectfully disagree, I read Uzumaki and It's not as fast paced as you imply. The sense of dread is not only in the imagery but the way Ito builds up tension over time. Last episode rushed too many plotlines all at once, It felt like a marathon. The short format of 4 episodes is a disservice to the book, they needed at least 8 to properly scale the story and make the selected plot points breeze. Good take. As someone who've read the manga, I see absolutely no point in watching the anime when I knew they just *basically* animated the manga but with less details and bad lighting. I can understand why they went with B&W because perhaps they wanted it to stay true to the manga. But not this way, it did not "translate" the atmosphere very well. It looks cheap and lazy. And now with the weird characters movements as well. It's just... well, horrible. I know I wouldn't enjoy it in the slightest and I'm not even interested in the first episode either. They truly did Junji Ito dirty. You can tell it's all just business without a real passion underneath.
I've heard, that creator said, that he realized, they don't have enough money to animate whole manga with same style as episode 1 so they decided to release all episodes, even if they have bad animation rather than releasing only one episode
@@asandax6Exactly, a film with this style of animation would have been much better than a 4-episode series with a decline in quality in the 2nd episode.

Warners brothers at it again. Seriously, animation in the 2020s is struggling since none of these company bigwigs give a damn. We all know how HBO screwed Cartoon Network over and axed a lot of their ongoing programs. The same thing happened here-Warner brothers didn’t like how expensive the first episode was and nuked the budget. The same team that decided to never show the completed roadrunner movie ruined this anime.
This is exactly the reason i don't watch anime anymore. It all always looks so cheap and cheeks it's not worth my time. Just read the manga. I cant believe they conned us like this though, i started getting suspicious because they only showed long haired Kirie in all the promotional material and trailers when she spends most of the story with short hair. I didn't think it could be this bad though...
Adult Swim are mastering the art of the "we spent 90% of the budget and time in the 1st episode, we'll make something with the 10% remaining for the rest of the season". Ninja Kamui already did the same thing, the Rick and Morty anime was just bad from the beginning tho
Definitely explains why the majority of the trailer was using shots from episode 1 But man I can’t get over how wonderfully animated that first episode is
Y'know, where I watched it, when the 2nd ep ended it loops back to the 1st ep because the 3rd one wasn't out yet, and shi✝️ I almost cried due to heartbreak. Heck if they made a 200mil dollar movie correctly I bet they'll get their money back, and more
Omg!! I had so much hope in this anime/adaptation... How can they do such disaster when we have been waiting for YEARS for it! It looks even worse than a Yamishibai episode... and those are 3 minutes long animatic, paper puppet style in some cases!!
I find it weird that they are only FOUR EPISODES, like they don't have budget to make the four episodes with the animation quality of the 1st one? Since Junji Ito's work is very popular, and if they were 12 episodes it would be more reasonable, but only 4 episodes...
Nah. Just impatient execs who demand quality in such a short amount of time. Whoever's decision it was to fire Production IG and get other studios should be ashamed.
I don’t know if you’re reading this and if you’re gonna make a video on episode three because who knows how the animation will look in that one this is information on why episode two looks like this so apparently the the director for the first episode was kicked off the project and they got a different director who was blacklisted. Go to arikendo he has a video covering why episode two looks this way
I'm waiting till all the episodes are coming out before I binge watch. I was waiting so long for this to come out, but delay after delay I stopped getting less hyped. Can't wait for there to be a behind the scenes documentary about the making of this show.
I think a big take away from this scenario should be that this sorta shit happens super often behind the scenes, this is just one of the few times we actually got to see it be released. There's probably untold amounts of amazing lost media that are "one or two good episodes" or "a third of a good movie" that just puttered out for whatever reason before it got fully realized.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who noticed the animation changes. I thought at first I was just crazy but no, it really did feel like a downgrade. I think episode 3 was SLIGHTLY better but still episode 1 seems to be the better one animation wise
I loved the first episode so much. The second episode couldve veen so much better but theres still some hope left in the next episodes! Lets just pray thats where most of the tiem went into
"take with a grain of salt" The budget was cut after the first episode due to it being too expensive to produce. They used rotoscope for the entire episode and then cleaned it up with new animation. It took too much time, cost too much money. Apparently even during the first episode, it had to be outsourced to get it finished. Not unusual for that to happen during production, but in this case, it was way too time consuming. They could not continue doing the same thing with the rest of the episodes.
Which was a dick move by warner bros. The studio was given both the budget and as much as time as they want. So of course the studio took their time, trying to perfect the episode. I don't wanna pint fingers....but fuck David.

@@momsaccount4033 it's been 5 years though when tf did the budget cut happen, they really couldn't make anything better?

It looks like it was done with AI 😭
This anime is going in a downward spiral
Junji Ito deserve better adaptation.
this cannot be happening
HOW IS IT IN BLACK AND WHITE YET STILL TRASH
Also the coloring is off, in ep 1 you can clearly identify black and white on ep 2 it feels more black and white with a slightly grey filter on top
I've heard that making animation in black and white is actually more difficult that making it in color
@@pablocasas5906Depands really , 3D animation , yea! 2D animation? No , mostly
@@pablocasas5906 Have you seen the original Disney cartoons? Mostly all of them are black and white, and has more quality than this slop.
Hum those are 3D models bro. If you didn't notice
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who noticed this, the first episode looked immaculate and the second one looked like trash
Maybe the real horror was the drop in animation
I was hyped about this. I haven’t been looking at anything uzumaki related so i could watch and form my own opinion…. Then I start to see articles about whats going on and im so crushed. Not only for my own entertainment but for the original team who worked so hard on the first episode. Biggest miss of 2024😢
I watched this with my friend and we bursted in laughter at the same time when we saw the scene at 1:17, the first episode was crazy and the drop in animation quality in the second episode was noticeable from the start.
Don't tell me you're actually defending the obvious beancounting by the MAX execs who wanted to kill this
The main reason why the rest of the show looked horrible as opposed to episode 1 is because the original studio and director were fired and replaced with a crappy hentai studio.
Now it’s just really depressing.
well evangelion is unanimated gibberish about muh feelings and is carried by nostalgic 30 year old neckbeards who think its "deep".
THAT DUDE AT 0:22 DIDN'T EVEN PUNCH HIM BRO WTF- 💀💀💀💀

Im genuinely sad. i was so excited for this anime from the day i saw that teaser 😢
It took years to animate, just to release this quality??? Man...
We should be harsher towards these companies who keep failing us.
I might be wrong, but apparently the studio who animated ep 2 mainly animates hentai, which if true is telling to say the least😂😅
$50 on queen bee
Yeah, you are wrong.
What's queen bee?
@@Qwuxa a cultured anime studio
Makes sense, 2 minutes scenes of a dude 2 frame trusting with the camera going about not hiding the hideous anatomy
I would be so happy if the studio and director who did episode 1 remade this 2nd episode, it would look gorgeous
Oh the bitter taste of disappointment...at least we had one beautiful episode.
episode 3 released and it looks really good
@@juannaym8488 It looks better than 2 but It's still far from the first one's quality. Plus the pacing is a complete disaster.
@@Sikanda. the pacing isn't a disaster if you compare it to the manga
It's an anthology and stacking the stories is the only way to really do it, unless you want 3-4 stories back to back that don't really connect. Stacking the stories by location, such as combining Shuichi's mom's death with the pregnant women, is a smart way to do it
Plus, Junji Ito's stories are rather fast paced. They don't pull punches and a lot happens on every page basically. If they went slow (as most horror media goes), it wouldn't feel like the manga and would kinda betray the rapid fire of horror that Uzumaki is
Just because something is fast paced and densely packed doesn't make it paced badly.
I can't imagine how confusing It must be for those unfamiliar with the manga. Good for you If you enjoyed It. I won't bother watching the 4th one. Just too much wasted potential.
@@Sikanda. I think 8 episodes would've been better. Even better would've been 4 one hour episodes, I think that would fit the approach of the series better
At this point if adult swim is making an anime, the animation is gonna be good for like 1-3 episodes and it will go down hill fast
@@jmoneyplayz8395 now I'm worried about that new anime directed by Cowboy Bebop's creator, which is going to premiere on [adult swim] in the near future
Then they should have turned this into a movie. It would have netted them profits on the first screening especially with how good episode 1 was.
@@asandax6Exactly, a film with this style of animation would have been much better than a 4-episode series with a decline in quality in the 2nd episode.
I was really looking forward to the show, and the creator seemed super invested in this series.
It’s such a shame it ended up like this
I heard this anime got delayed like 5 or 7 years, if that's the case then we can't be surprised when quality takes a hit (huge hit in this case).
I mean, just imagine the amount of missmanagement that has to happen to have such delays, meaning, in other words, that the management on the product most likely got hit too

@@JustUser402 one of the animators made a tweet about it. I don't know the exact reasons, but funding was pulled and given to other shows instead.
0:40 That reminds me of a time when you can determine if a particular episode of a classic G1 Transformers/BTAS episode is animated by a Japanese or a South Korean studio. Some things will never change regardless of changes in technology...
This turns into Collection so quickly
Apparently it was because they were screwed over which is sad
The 🇮🇱’s did this
Bruh i swear i thought it was supposed to look like this even tho i was constantly asking myself what happened to the animation but i just thought maybe it was an artistic choice coz from the first trailer i thought it a passion project, then i opened internet and got to know that we all got scammed 🤣🤣
How do you know Warner Bros was involved? I couldn't find that info.
@@bluerosemaiden5945 Cartoon Network and by extension toonami and adult swim is owned by Warner brothers.

Dude not even low budget studios animate like this
Just when we thought itos work will finally get proper anime. How unfortunate.
They better not EVER let this studio touch this project EVER AGAIN.
I think Adult Swim or whoever oversaw them did not allow them more time to complete the project or something.
October is a fever dream of disappointment. First Joker 2, now Uzumaki.
Not to mention Chain Saw man and it's goretuber fest.
if you actually had expectations for joker 2, that's exclusively on you
This is exactly the reason i don't watch anime anymore.
Those monsters lied to me where was the animation quality from the trailer :(
In episode 1
If this happened to my work, I'll probably sue.
All they really needed to do was animate it in the old 80s/90s style with muted, more realistic colors, and a slower pace.
Adult Swim are mastering the art of the "we spent 90% of the budget and time in the 1st episode, we'll make something with the 10% remaining for the rest of the season". Ninja Kamui already did the same thing, the Rick and Morty anime was just bad from the beginning tho
Definitely explains why the majority of the trailer was using shots from episode 1
But man I can’t get over how wonderfully animated that first episode is
I have never in my 18 years of existence seen a fumble this bad holy shit
This is berserk 2016 all over again
Group projects be like:
Y'know, where I watched it, when the 2nd ep ended it loops back to the 1st ep because the 3rd one wasn't out yet, and shi✝️ I almost cried due to heartbreak.
Heck if they made a 200mil dollar movie correctly I bet they'll get their money back, and more
Very obvious that a different studio animated the second episode, and that studio did not give a fuck lol. Reminds me of the berserk animation.
>"Uzumaki animation sucks"
>look inside
>it's perfectly fine
Gonna get the Berserk treatment

Omg!! I had so much hope in this anime/adaptation...
How can they do such disaster when we have been waiting for YEARS for it!
It looks even worse than a Yamishibai episode... and those are 3 minutes long animatic, paper puppet style in some cases!!
When the budget is low lmao
All the budget are so much overblowed for the first episode that the second is just the leftover of the budget
5 years but only less than 1 year for ep 1. I wonder what happened there.
Apparently all of their budget got confiscated by Warner Bros
I don’t know if you’re reading this and if you’re gonna make a video on episode three because who knows how the animation will look in that one this is information on why episode two looks like this so apparently the the director for the first episode was kicked off the project and they got a different director who was blacklisted. Go to arikendo he has a video covering why episode two looks this way
I can't believe we waited 5 years for one good episode...
I can’t decide what hurt more, watch the second episode or that sound effect of the guy punching the laptop. RIP ears.
they really blew all the funds for one episode 😭😭
I'm waiting till all the episodes are coming out before I binge watch. I was waiting so long for this to come out, but delay after delay I stopped getting less hyped.
Can't wait for there to be a behind the scenes documentary about the making of this show.
We just got "Berserked" again

Aw man I got hyped for nothing?
At least you still have ep 1 lmao💀
I THOUGHT I WAS TRIPPING BRO THANKS FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO 😅
They keep massacring our boy junji ito work bruh💔😭
I think a big take away from this scenario should be that this sorta shit happens super often behind the scenes, this is just one of the few times we actually got to see it be released. There's probably untold amounts of amazing lost media that are "one or two good episodes" or "a third of a good movie" that just puttered out for whatever reason before it got fully realized.
I genuinely confused why this shit can happen after 5 years delay man lol
There should be a law prohibiting studios from trying to animate Junji Ito's works.
Ok let’s hope ep 3 will brings it back.
Lets just pray thats where most of the tiem went into
"take with a grain of salt"
The budget was cut after the first episode due to it being too expensive to produce.
They spent their whole budget on episode one
I don’t mind waiting longer if they can get the people who made the first episode back; those people knew what was up
1:16 When they run I imagine the Ballin-Roody Rich song in the background (the Animan Studios song) XD
Also just to talk about Ito Junji himself, I would love to see him do a take on The Adams Family.
It’s giving berserk 2016 😭🙏
The Uzumaki anime was such a big let down. Can’t believe I was actually excited for it. Literal slop right after the first episode.
