  • Dave Farina highlights the distinct benefits of the StarSense Explorer Dobsonian as a great beginner telescope along with some exclusive tips and tricks while observing. The StarSense Explorer telescope line is the first telescope that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and calculate its position in real time. The Dobsonian telescope’s large-aperture Celestron StarSense Explorer is ideal for serious beginners, thanks to the app's user-friendly StarSense Explorer Powered by SkySafari™ app interface and detailed tutorials. The large aperture will ensure that you won’t outgrow the telescope as you continue on in your astronomical adventures. Celestron.com/SSETelescopes

    I have the 4-inch refractor Starsense and the app is incredible. It takes seconds to find anything you want (that your telescope is capable of seeing) and the menus and lists of objects are so easy to use. So much easier and better than trying to find dim nebula in my light-polluted city skies.

      Hey Texas Rangers! This is Dave Farina from Cosmos Safari, the maker of the video. I couldn't agree more. It's a joy to use. I honestly felt like the technology just faded into the background. It's the closest I have felt to the night sky in my 15 year career teaching astronomy!

    I've got about 20k in astronomy and astrophotography gear. My Starsense Explorer 8" dob has all but taken over as my go to selection when I just want to do some relaxed visual astronomy. I've started taking it to public outreach events to demonstrate the technology and how wonderful it is for people new to the hobby.

    Great job of summing up what I would call as a 30 year amateur astronomer the greatest leap in searching objects for a dob I have seen. One awesome thing is I have even seen others take the module off and use it on their existing larger dobs with great success.

      I got a Starsense 80 and 3D printed an adapter that allows me to mount the Starsense dock on any scope with a standard finder dovetail and can swap it between all of my scopes. I also have a spare old iphone set up entirely as a dedicated Starsense computer. I've been in the hobby as long as you have and I have always hated digital setting circles and goto scopes because they felt like a bureaucratic obstacle between me and the night sky. I preferred to star-hop with manual dobs and atlases.
      This changed all that. It's the first device assisted pointing that felt like a pointing aid to me rather than an encumbrance.

    I've been using manual dobsonians and star-hopping with a Telrad for thirty years and have always hated computerized telescopes. The alignment routines and obtuse proprietary keypads feel like a bureaucratic obstacle between me and the sky.
    Starsense explorer changed that for me. It's the perfect digital setting circle system for me. It's helping me POWER through extensive observing lists of Herschel objects, even from Bortle 6 skies.

    I’ve had my dad’s C8 for many years. I do astrophotography with my 72mm APO… but I recently got a 10” StarSense dob… and holy cow! It’s my new favorite visual telescope. It’s as jaw-dropping a technology as the starsense alignment camera for the SCTs was a few years ago.

    Is it possible to put a sun filter on this telescope?

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you can buy Thousand Oaks Sun filter sheets and tape onto those 1/4" foam core poster boards with a hole cut-out for your scope then tape the shield onto the poster board. But do not point your phone at the sun, use the shadow of the Sun and when it is smallest it should be in the eyepiece.

    I purchased this one as I had quite a bit of $$ in Zon gift cards. Overall though it seems the Apertrura AD8 (not avail on Amazon) has better value sans the cell phone adapter/app. Better eyepieces (1 additional), fan, moon filter, focuser, and laser collimator. Actually after typing this, I feel robbed. Cmon Celestron, you can do better.

      The 8inch doesn’t even have collimation knobs for the primary mirror. You have to use a screwdriver.

    The Celestron Dobsonians are way better than the "ordinary" Skywatcher Dobsonians, I suppose. Are they really have (much) better quality picture than the Skywatcher Dobs? In other words, does a 10inch Celestron Dob provide me a much better quality and better resolutioned picture than an "avarage" SkyWatcher 10inch Dobsonian? Please answer, I am really curious!

    The key fact here is that StarSense is best in "clear dark skies"
    The camera/ app does not identify in slightly cloudy or slightly light polluted skies
