Love this series, Oliver, I'm excited you've released another episode. I've begun working towards being able to paint all the lights in a single big wet-in-wet wash, but just as you said, it's challenging and even stressful, especially if there are a lot of hue changes and lights to preserve. I love that you're offering a less stressful way to work up to that goal as skills gradually develop. And I've heard no other instructors teach your "single edge" key principle, and it's briliiant. Thank you!

It’s great to see your process in stages. For my own paintings, I must admit to being impatient and I don’t like to see unresolved issues. This is perhaps the greatest lesson that I need to learn! I am painting along, by the way and will add the next wash tomorrow.
As always some revelations and aha moments in there for me. I didn't really understand Peter Cronin's approach to washes and now I get it. I really appreciate your clear, concise explanations. Thank you!

This is great Ollie! I, too, have been trying to get all the lights done in one large wash and it can be so very stressful/mistake ridden. This approach shows me that I can achieve the same fresh result in a more relaxed way.

Keep. in mind that this isn't a paint-along series. It aims to give an insight into how to manage edges and plan washes across any painting, although there is no harm in replicating the scene here to practice some of these skills.

A very timely lesson as I just received a river photo from a friend which I plan to render in watercolor. Have you ever incorporated liquid ink into a watercolor painting?
The painting is gradually unfolding. My drawing is not being helpful to lightly painting the right hand side, but I have decided to press on until I get to the end, then do another painting of this photo with many more “skills” I my fingers.
Thx Paul - I'll take a look. I find the aquafine synthetics get the job done perfectly for this, although I don't do much lifting out if I can help it.
Is it ultramarine or French ultramarine?? I just came to know last week tht one is green shade and other is red shade. Does it really make difference??? I hv ultramarine

Nice video. Rosemary and Co make something called 'the eradicator brush' - its perfect for pulling out paint, worth taking a look.

I use French Ultramarine, which is Daler Rowney's product - it makes very little difference. One is slightly warmer than the other.
