Welcome to Big Corn Island, a tiny Nicaraguan island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. I loved my time here and I would strongly recommend visiting this island paradise if you get the chance! Let me know what you think of Big Corn Island, Nicaragua down below 👇 🇳🇮
Suggest you go on a vacation for a couple of months 1st as this was a holiday promotion RUclips video. Down side is the rainy weather as it rains 2/3 of the year with many hurricanes.
I love how much you appreciate the simple things and the sheer beauty of the island and get to know the locals, the food and their customs instead of looking to be entertained as so many do!
i came here and to little corn island specifically about 10 yrs ago bypassing the mainland . Im glad to see things have remained the same. what paradise indeed!!
Nicaragua is famous for a lot of lakes and volcanoes. The two largest fresh water lakes in Central America, Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua, are located there.
Wow, the Corn Islands are crazy gorgeous. I've been to Bluefields several times to visit relatives, but never had the chance to visit the islands (surprisingly). I'm definitely going on my next trip!
Explored the whole island for 2 days on a scooter after 4 days on Little Corn. Had an early dinner from the same wonderful lady that told you her story; best meal of my life! Lobster sautéed with vegetables, potatoes and rice... Wish I’d had another day there

I grew up in Corn Island in the 90's, some of my best memories are in that place. Especially when we would climb mount- pleasant, which is the highest point on the island and climb up the light tower. In the month of October migratory birds would come down from the north and the island would be adorned with a lot of beautiful bird species.
I’m Nicaraguan but grew up in Florida I would love to visit corn island 🏝️ my mother’s best friend family come from those islands and she always invited us. I can’t wait to go
Crazy that I'm from Nicaragua, but I have never been to the Atlantic side of Nicaragua. Only the pacific since I was born in Managua. Thanks for the video. Subscribed
The abandoned building seems to be the restaurant/hotel Dona Lola's. She was a well known chef who moved to Big Corn Island from Detroit. Part of the name Dona Lola is visible. Last I heard she moved from BCI to Ecuador. Dona Lola was a special person with the most brilliant smile and warm personality
We're are planning a trip there for our anniversary. I'm from Jamaica and rundown is a popular dish here. Interesting to see Jamaican cultural influences in other places.
Hi Matt! My husband and I are planning a trip to Nicaragua in the beginning of July. After seeing your video, Big Corn Island is a must. Can you please advise on the best way to get to the Island from the mainland, where to rent a motorbike for two, do we need our own snorkeling equipment, etc. Thank you!!!
I'm happy to hear that you will go to the Corn Islands! The easiest way is to fly from Managua, otherwise I think you can take a boat from Bluefields. There are places to rent snorkel gear on the island, but it's always nice to have your own as there are so many places to snorkel. There are a few places to rent motorbikes on the island, so I would ask your accommodation when you arrive.
Thank you Matt for such an awesome video. I appreciate all the detailed step by step explanation of your adventure in Corn Island. I've been wanting to visit the island but I haven't had the opportunity to do it. How are people dealing with Covid there? Is it safe to drink the local water there? I remember that I got sick in Cancun just by eating a fresh salad there. I was told not to eat anything that is touch by their local water unless is bottled water. Thank you again for showing us a video of this wonderful place. I'm hoping to start traveling as soon as it's safe to travel to other countries (when Covid is under control). Btw, did you notice a difference in the cost of food when you paid with US dollars vs. Córdoba? Is US dollar accepted by everyone in the island?
Thanks so much! From what I was told, it’s not recommended to drink the tap water. Most places accept US dollar, though the Cordoba is more widely used, and i didn’t notice a price difference between the two currencies. I hope you get the chance to visit one day!
We drink well water and some (mostly the expats... except me... drink bottled water). I never got sick of the fresh natural well water, without fluoride.
Thanks for the video I would visit Nicaragua 🇳🇮 this mid year I’ll try to viste Corn island I already did my research you take a connection or charter fly for around $100 dollars it all depends if it’s high season like Easter and Christmas etc
Hello Matt. Beautiful Big Corn Island I haven't heard of. I have questions: how much does the flight cost and how long does it take? How much is the accommodation? How much did you pay for the "Rundow" dish, it looks delicious? Is fuel expensive and what is the cost of renting a scooter? And the last question :) Why don't you wear a helmet? Sorry, it might be worth going there, but what are the prices? You don't say much about it in this vlog. Greetings .
Hello. You can take a flight from Managua on La Costena Airlines which costs ~$150 USD roundtrip or you can take busses to Bluefields Nicaragua and then a boat, which would be cheaper. Accommodation ranges from ~$15-$100+USD per night depending on where you stay. I cannot remember the cost of fuel and I had a friend who let me rent a scooter. The rundown dish was ~$8 USD. I wish I had a helmet but i unfortunately couldn't find one on the island. It's definitely worth the trip to the Corn Islands!
@@MattKramerTravels Thanks, very interesting, pop in my head now:) This is what I'm looking for on your vlog. I also put on my to-do list. Corn islands why not?
Great video - I can't believe I never got there from Managua.. Now, mate, minute 1:22, why would you use a footage from HongKong? This city is Hong Kong central.. I lived there. Corn Island is not a bustle metropolis.. please, be careful :)
I visited in July and it was quite hot, I assume it will be similar. There may be a little more rain in September but usually it just rains for a short while and then you have clear skies, at least from my experience.
Did you say you saw a swordfish in the reef? I’ve been a lot of places in the Caribbean and to the Pacific side of Costa Rica and have never been to Nicaragua. I’ve didn’t realize that swordfish could be found in water that shallow, but that’s really cool!
I’ve heard about this place. Just some questions… is there a link you could send with regard to accommodations and what method of payments do they use? Are there ATM machines?
It’s a really beautiful place! For accommodation I would recommend looking online, booking.com should have some options! I believe there is one atm on big corn island but I’d recommend bringing enough cash for your stay. Most places on the island take the Nicaraguan cordoba and the US dollar, but most places won’t accept credit card from my experience.
The cost of living can vary. You can live quite affordably with your basic necessities but because it's an island and many items have to be imported, some items can be quite expensive. Hey Matt, I am currently staying on the Yucatan Penninsula but will be headed for Nicaragua shortly.. Although you showed a couple of food prices in your vid, I am curious as to what the "Rundown" cost you and what was the name (and cost) of your accommodation on Big Corn Island.?
The abandoned place was in the process of becoming a hotel I believe called Lola's. I don't think they ever got all the permits in order so it was halted. The kitchen there was operational for a while. I think it was 7 years ago our first trip and we had a rondon soup there.
Just curious if there are any snakes or scorpions that you should look out for on the island like on the mainland. Did they get separated or do they hitch rides on the barges/airplanes.
