Thanks for including us in the bracket! The Hurache-X Kevlar does play better with weight and players say the 14mm version is even better for singles!
I just ordered the Hurache before I saw this review. It makes me want to return it and get the Thrive. But maybe with some lead tape it will be okay, I hope?
On the contrary I’ve had my Joola for 2-3 weeks using it 3-4 days a week and not had any of these issues I’ve been seeing others online have. I think this is a small community of ppl who have faced this issue which is unfortunate but rare. I’ve been very happy with the performance of my gen 3 so far and it’s seemed to get increasingly better as games go on.
This is Natalia. It was great meeting you John! Thank you for the shout out, it made my day 😊 Congrats on the gold, you guys played great! I also got gold in 4.5 mixed doubles. Keep up the great work!
I also have a tennis background and am loving the control of my 14mm DBD. I wanted to ask if you weighted your paddle up, or do you play it stock? I only added an overgrip, but I’m consider a bit lead tape for stability.
I didn't add any lead tape since the paddle felt great from the beginning. However, in many occasions when I tried resetting an aggresive dink from the air, I end up hitting the ball straight to the net. I think more stability will help with that. So I think I will give lead tape a try!
Congrats on the gold! And thanks for chatting with me at the tournament
@johnkewpickleball can we get some more tool drum covers?
Great pod as usual! 🥊
I really like using CRBN lead tape, which is covered with a plastic coating. They are 1” inch 3 gram strips which I find very effective at 4 & 8 o’clock. So it increases twist weight/sweet spot without adding very much swing weight. Plus, you have the benefit of the lead not being exposed. Thank you, John and keep the great reviews coming!
Great Idea and process guys. Presents some great info for folks looking to buy. Appreciate the time you invest to this!
Doing a paddle bracket by points is so cool! And I'm glad you played each matchup twice so that you both use the paddles to remove player bias! Such a cool idea! And it was really fascinating to see the results; as a Honolulu Pickleball paddle user I was excited to see the J2K score so high! Nice work
Thanks for the feedback! The J2K did great! Couple of points here and there, and it could have taken gold...
Fast becoming my favorite Pod!
Great Pod fellas!
Love that format for ranking paddles! You two are so innovative! Glad you mentioned Braydon’s latest podcast and his brothers charity the AJU foundation, that podcast got me 😢
I stopped by Method road last Thursday evening and couldn't find a place to park, so I went on to Flaherty...
Pickleball studio pointed out that the new Joola's are already crunching like core crushed paddles when pressed after just a few days. Does this crunching really mean these paddles are broken or is this normal because of the foam they are using? Would love to see one cut open to see if its just the foam and what that looks like
They can't possibly be broken probably just the foam loosening up and still doing its job
There might be some crunching unrelated to a broken core, but you can definitely tell when the core is broken by the way it plays (together with the crunching)
@@ShawnBachor-hl3nd Except with the foam loosening up, it makes them illegal once the velocity test becomes a thing in a few weeks. The issue happening is the PP cells touching the foam are losing structural integrity as that foam does its job. It's sad when an engineering flaw is advertised as a feature.
Another Nice video John. Can you do a comparison on Kevlar paddles specifically the Ruby vs Honolulu J2K paddles? Tks
Hey, as always, great podcast! I was just wondering if you could link the website to the hand speed index. Thank you! ✌️
I agree with making this a biannual event! If you start making the list now, you have the Ronbus FX series and the new Paddleteks already.
I’ve played 3 times with my J2K. I really enjoy it. The texture however is so rough that I have to clean it after every game. The amount it chews the ball up is excessive 😂. I need to find an effective cleaning tool that won’t help wear down the grit. Any thoughts on cleaning the Kevlar?
I have the Joola gen 3 Perseus have used it 3 times it is already unusable I suggest everyone makes a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Joola is ripping people off they are hyping up paddles and they are literally breaking immediately. This happened with the GEN two and delamination.
Overpriced and a rip off for sure. Wow it’s awesome for a month max! What a joke
I've had the pro drive since January. Nice to see it getting noticed
I was Counting the hours for this podcast
The final countdown
Awesome 80s movie by the way!
Great podcast. Just ordered the Azul with your code to go along with my Ruby.
Wondering when the review for the new Vatic Oni gonna be released!
Yeah Method is always crazy. If you are willing to drive a little further out towards Chapel Hill there are nice courts at both Ephesus Park and Piney Woods. Slightly less packed.
Interesting about the 14mm DBD and have the same experience as your other viewer. I've got it DBD in 14 and 16mm plus the Ruby and get more spin and control out of the 14mm than the others. Also, with almost two weeks using the Perseus Gen3 feel I can control it now. Getting so much topspin.... really like it! No signs of core crushing but keeping an eye on it. Great videos, enjoy listening to you both.
I am the other viewer! When I got the DBD, I got it in 14mm and 16mm. I would randomly pick one paddle from my bag, play for a few games, and then play with the other paddle. By the 3rd session, I knew the 16mm wasn't for me, I couldn't confidently dink. Good luck with the gen3 perseus!
Wouldn’t the Ruby in 14mm be insane!!!
@@adimperialwhere’d you get it? You ready to sell?
@@adimperial I wonder what’s their next release? You think what you ordered has anything to do with it?
@@adimperial I don’t know anything about out that one. Can you compare it to a SixZero paddle?
I see that Babolat WZRD on your wall, I'm really curious on how that hits. I haven't seen one on the court yet.
Hope to play with that one soon, along with the other 2 in the Babolat line up.
Do you have a link to the maneuverability calculator? I can't seem to find it online.
How about investing in advancements if the sweet spot???
This podcast is absolutely one of the best🥳🥳🥳
Can you explain the generations of paddles? I still don’t understand what makes a Gen 1.5 vs 2 vs 3 and don’t see any good blogs explaining Gen 3. I just get ads for Joola when I search.
Hey John! Didn’t realize you were in CO. I’m in Littleton. Do you go to the Dry Creek Lifetime? Also my Ruby was great at first but lost almost all of its spin. I just ordered the Spartus Apollo. Have you had a chance to check that out yet? Keep up the awesome work!
I'm up in Lafayette, so I play around north Denver and Boulder. Too bad about the grit on your Ruby. I have the Spartus but haven't hit it yet
Was the paddle bracket chart removed? Just got the J2K last week and really enjoying it.
I hope you do more testing of the Hurache X Control Kevlar with some lead to see if it improves the performance.
Also, for a Control player, would the Thrive be too poppy?
Question? Is it primarily the 16mm Joola Gen 3 that are failing?
What about the Azul over the ruby if you were to start with a new paddle?
I'm not sure what the handle interiors are made from, but would it work to screw a large screw into the end of the handle to change the balance point?
The screw would likely come loose. Most handles are polypropylene honeycomb on the inside, and some are even hollow. Your best bet would be to remove the stock grip, add lead or tungsten tape at the bottom of the handle, and replace the grip.
Good stuff as always 👋
I’m not sure the crackling around the edges is a crushed core. Crushed cores crackle continuously. These crackle for a moment, and then you work through it, and it’s gone. Which makes me feel like it’s the foam loosening up.
I enjoyed the podcast and great information. I really enjoyed the paddle playoffs between you and Eddie. Cannot wait to hear next week’s podcast on the PPA. I heard that the PPA has a no paddle challenge ruling for players, similar to the one in the APP. Can you confirm this? Have you heard about the PPA’s paddle exit velocity testing that they are proposing and how it will affect the player’s paddles in future tournaments? Will the exit velocity testing results be made available to the public to make informed decisions on whether to purchase from a paddle manufacturer?
What's the word on the street for how long Proton's nano-tac holds up versus peel-ply RCF grit? The Proton's aren't cheap.
Great podcast!! Can you do a review on Spartus Apollo ? The paddle shape is exactly the same as Volair M2F but the paddle face is made of Kevlar.
I have the paddle on my shelf ready to be tested
@@johnkewpickleball great! Can’t wait to see your results because many quality issues have been discussed in Reddit and Spartus customer service is actively participating in Reddit community!!
Why is the Thrive Azul #1 isnt it basically a Mark Kinetic or J2K pro?
What was the SW of your and Eddie’s Azul?
A new gearbox Pro Elongated that I was testing suffered core crush after 1 week of play. Core crush occurred along the sides and top of the paddle. About 1” from the edge.
I've always felt the same way with 14mm paddles and control.
Thanks again for the great pod!! Very good paddles! It will be tough to decide which to get! But definitely not Joola at this point!
On another note, one of the ladies at my club mentioned that people are using hairspray on their paddles. I’d never heard of this. It’s obviously illegal! I assume it makes the paddle sticky and imparts more spin. Have you ever heard of this? Engineering wise, if they ever were to perfect a legal spray on texture it would be a lot cheaper and probably easier than the face sheets that are being used now. Many hurdles to get something legal but maybe someone will come up with something like this.
Thanks again!!
Would the ONI be tech as you describe?
Came to the exact same conclusion when I looked at the Joolas. Hard plastic is not meant to flex the way Joola intends, and the core crushing appears to be only apparent in the top half of the paddles where the extra foam is. Coincidence? Nah.
Hi Rafa - I just watched your video. Well done! Love your take on this. Can you reach out to me at johnkewpickleball@gmail.com so we can talk shop?
I am returning the new Joola gen 3 paddle I just purchased based on your new information. I think Joola should do a gen 3 paddle recall so they do not loose their customer base.
YAY!!!
Are you using the Volair Mach2 Forza 14mm or 16mm?
16mm
I mean honestly..... who the hell put any of the 6.0 infinity paddles above the regular Double Black Diamond or Ruby?
For some it is a paddle more suited for them. I finally tried the BD and it was better than the DBD for ME. And then with the review from this channel on the BDI, I tried it and it was the most solid SixZero Paddle I’ve hit. However, I weight all my paddles the same, and the weighting makes all the paddles I have play better than off the shelf.
What SW is your Azul? I went w/a 116 and really liking it. 👍🏻
Mine's a 116 stock weighted up to 118
Pickleball companies are coming up with new technologies for paddles, what about for the pickeball ball? Should companies come up with new balls that is durable and yet does not damage the pickleball paddle in a long term? Perhaps adding a rubber or dampener coating around the ball should help?
Eddie, any update on how your Kineon plus is working? Good results? Thanks!
Just started using it this week. Probably not long enough to see full results, but it's promising. Seems to be working well on my tennis elbow and shoulder. Less so on my achilles area. Will keep at it for the duration of the 30 day trial period, but it needs to be pretty solid to justify the price tag! Do you have one??
@@EddieK-PB Thanks for your response! I don’t have one but am thinking of getting one. Lots of chronic knee issues and dealing right now with sprained ankle and plantar fasciitis. So if it helps I’ll pull the trigger for at least the 30 day trial. Price is hefty though.
So glad I decided against a Joola. Now I'm leaning more towards the Mach 2 Forza or R2 Pulsar FX.
And they don't stand behind their product. Zero customer support/service.
Love my Mach 2 Forza. An apotheosis of perfection.
Look at the Spartus Apollo. Wide body Kevlar paddle. 108-109 swing weight (super light) with a whopping 7.55 twist weight (higher means more stable. One of highest on entire market). Lightning fast and the sweet spot is the entire face, almost no mishits. Plus it’s only $117 with a code - STSPICKLEBALL
@@robedwards6926 Interestingly, I've had about half a dozen exchanges with Joola support about the Gen 3s. Sometimes takes 48 hours but most of the time, in 24 hours. So there's variances of support experiences.
Thrive Azul!!
Do a budget paddle bracket!?
It's on the list! What's your idea of 'budget'? Under $100?
@@EddieK-PB I think that makes sense. If there are not enough paddles in that range maybe bump to $120?
Hey guys is the shape shifter the Kevlar version?
No, it's the RCF Shapeshifter
Is there a such thing as an all carbon fiber pickleball paddle whose core is also carbon fiber? if so who makes them?
Gearbox basically. PPE power and PPC control
Hoping the Proton's get a couple alternative (less busy) face designs... 😵💫 Yes, Series 3 too...
Paying $200+ for a paddle that looks like it comes in a 4 pack is not high on the list, regardless of how good it is.
Shout out to method!
Given the issues with Joola Gen 3 you covered in the beginning of the podcast, Joola should’ve definitely been excluded from the competition. As of now, anyone aware of the current issues would be highly unlikely to purchase it. So the final should’ve been a standoff between two Kevlar paddles, J2K and Thrive Azul.
Since you are really not hitting way up at the tip, does it really matter that it is crunching?
Yes. Creates imbalance and inconsistency. Too much power.
Watched a few games with the new joola paddles. Terrible pickleball games imo. Every point was just drive, drive, drive, net balls and out balls galore
A lot oof people talk and test the Gearbox Prodrive Power, but the Control version is to me the better one, a very well rounded paddle
Seems like if there was an "opportunity bracket" that the M2F had a shot at the podium. From the 8 seed.
I agree. It was really close. The games against the Joola were brutal. There was a lot of back and forth... A little more time with the Volaire, and who knows!
The fact that you are seeing a lot of core crushing issues with the Gen 3's seems to support the theory that the Joola pros are using Gen 2's with paint jobs. That is probably why the racquets sounded so different when you saw McGuffin playing Ben Johns. McGuffin is probably playing with a real Gen 3 while Johns is playing with a paint job altered Gen 2.
Did these paddles have lead tape to alter their feel or performance
I’d doubt it…weighting would change all the results so significantly. They might not ever get the head to heads done as both of them prob would require different setups.
Most of them had perimeter weighting, typically 3 grams at the 4- and 8-o'clock positions
@@johnkewpickleball why would it be only “most”? And due to weight variations that same set up wouldn’t be ideal from one player to the next let alone even for the same person doing the testing.
Engage Pursuit Pro...
Best all-around paddle.
Power
Spin
Control
I loved my EX 6.0. The grit has worn out with consistent play after 5 months of hard play. Asking for a warranty. I will be replacing with a spartus apollo and seeing what that company is all about. Thinking of getting azul for singles. The only thing I would say the EX needs is a better sweet spot. Kinda lacking compared to other hybrid paddles with less surface area
Don’t let anyone tell you that it issues won’t happen if you don’t hit hard. Several guys at my club had to return it and they are not hard hitters.
J2K Best Paddle per dollar
Another great Pod guys! One thing, something wrong with your final match scoring. If Anna won first game 11-7 over Azul in first game, then Azul couldn’t get 21 points as you noted. Maybe you just misspoke the first game score. No biggy, just something to note.
I must've misspoke. The scores were 11-10, 7-11 (Anna-Azul)
Just checking on the scores in the final round. You reported that the Anna Bright Scorpeus won the first game 11-7 over the Thrive Azul and the Thrive Azul won the second game 11-10 over the Anna Bright Scorpeus, which would make the Anna Bright Scorpeus the winner over the Thrive Azul by a score of 21-18 and not the other way around. Did you report the first game score wrong and the Thrive Azul actually beat the Anna Bright Scorpeus both games?
Right. As soon as he said AB won the first game 11-7, that pretty much seals it!
Where’s Eddie’s hat from last week?
🙂 Now accepting hat sponsorships! LOL
Day 7 with my Gen3 Joola not core crushed yet.
Idea for future development- using AI tools that analyze your game that can also suggest a paddle suited to reducing errors.
Durability needs a huge upgrade. The replacement faces or a new skin should be next.
Won’t make up for core crushing in the Joolas. They need to go back and test more
@@BigRed22_KC I get it. Hopefully that goes without saying.
Joola owes all the players that have to play against this paddles eye protection.
I'm having an issue with Joola paddle. Can't rectify because thier customer service is so awful. No reply to email and no answer to calls.
I’m having the same issue
Wonder if it’s cuz they’re so overwhelmed with the core crushing issue? Or, maybe that’s always been an issue with Joola?? 🤔
Requested an RMA for the 30 day policy to return, mine 2 sessions about 3 hours each and core crushed….poor design, or is it a one of?
@123BV8 What is an rma?
I've got no where with them. Very aggravating.
@@123BV8 how did you get in touch with them everyone needs to contact Better business bureau they are robbing us
Please clarify...the scores from each matchup are derived from those subjective categories, but how are you taking into account each persons ratings into the final score?
We each played a game with each paddle, so that smooths over any differences in skill level
oni in background but no review
It breaks down just like the JOOLA’s.
@@49pickles From what Chris and PB studio says it breaks down even faster than the joolas... YIKES
The Shapeshifter won both games over the J2K, so the Shapeshifter should have had 22 points and the J2K should have had 19 points.
"injected foam" next to PP honeycomb will never be consistant. Simple physics. Possible that a non liquid form of soft foam being "wedged" could work. Wondering if ARAMID cores would react the same way??
If these Gen 3 Joola's are degrading so fast, there will be lots of Rec players using these rockets! No testing in Rec so why not use a EVA core (non-approved) and not have the "break in" and "crushing" issues? that would fail if tested? Just pure power w/o all the other stuff.
Is the ONI similar tech to what you describe?
Twice a year = semi-annual
I always have to look that one up!
And biannual.
It’s feels a bit disingenuous to claim you’d bring a Joola to a tournament with confidence after having one break on you mid game. The average consumer (rec players) will eat these up but competitive players (tournament players) should probably avoid them entirely.
First?
