HBO [Home Box Office] - "Different Music!" (Sign-Off, 1976)

- Опубликовано: 6 янв 2023
- Though this has been uploaded many times by various users, here is the earliest yet known representation (albeit with different music) of the animated sign-off of HBO (or as it was fully referred to in those days, Home Box Office from Time-Life) as used from about 1975 to the point they went to a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week schedule in 1981.
Includes:
Last few seconds of ending credits for special, Folies Bergere (which originated from the Tropicana in Las Vegas)
Slide with HBO logo and cartoon drawing of dove and baby chicks in nest, with something resembling an actual sign-off accompanied by musical background (voiceover by ??):
"This concludes our schedule of events for today. If you've missed a program, or would like to see one a second time, Feature Presentations are repeated throughout the month on Home Box Office. Consult your Program Guide for exact dates and times."
And finally, the animated sign-off sequence itself, with completely different music from what all other videos show - reminiscent of an MTM sitcom theme (the horn punctuations at the ending HBO logo do match each letter disappearing)
(The later version of this animated sign-off, featuring the more familiar music with heavy emphasis on tom-toms and conga drums, and as aired in 1979 [though its earliest airing in that form may have been 1977], can be seen here - • HBO Sign-Off (1979) )
11 seconds of black, before either recording ends or carrier is cut
This aired on local Texas TV (via cable) early Sunday, April 25th 1976 at about 12:30am.

I was honestly expecting the dreamy horn tune in the animation that everybody else had, but hearing a different tune blew me away! Here's hoping more pre-1977 HBO footage turns up...
0:40 HBO - Sign Off (Music Video)
If only they still did this. The thing about this kind of music is that it was soft, easy listening dreamscape love music. It's soft to hear and not intense and harsh.
I love the '70s "found on the side of a van" graphic this starts with.
This was what the 70's promised us.
It's amazing that survived 46 years. Think of everything that has happened since 1976. Stunning.
By 1977, the sign-off animated sequence switched its music to a cut of "The Great Entertainment Alternative," which was HBO's slogan at the time.
Was that in June 1977?
A gentle, sentimental song to put you in the right mood for bed. I love both themes, and this one is quite wonderful.
The different sign-off music is very much reminiscent of the themes heard on the graphics demo reels for Sullivan & Marks from 1978 and Computer Image Corporation from 1975 (the latter being used to show graphics made for HBO), as well as promos/IDs for the Home Theater Network.
Still wondering what the name of it is and what library it came from.
@@ChrisHadleyWriter Yeah, Those CIC scanimated promos were used by HBO during 1975-77.
@@ChrisHadleyWriter same
Now that's a good early pay TV find. Especially more footage of 1970s era HBO
Me too
There is a posting on YT from November 1977 that has the more familiar music; I have also seen a very clean 1978 Beta transfer with the second version of the music. I believe this is the first pre-1977 footage of HBO I have ever seen.
The track heard here is a variation of what I believe to be HBO's "main theme" at the time -- that version can be heard accompanying an HBO animation on a 1975 Computer Image Corp. demo reel, as well as on a 1978 Sullivan & Marks reel.
I was thinking that this "theme" could have been part of a custom package for HBO, as opposed to generic production music, thus the different variations/moods of the theme itself.
I didn’t know that this sign off had an alternate score nor did I know that it dates back to 1976. Thanks for the upload, I love discovering different versions of things like these!!!!
I never saw this version with this particular music, it’s quite nice. 🙂
Pretty nice find 🙂. To be honest, I was pretty surprised seeing the HBO sign-off animation having a different tune than the one we are all familiar with.
Cleanest copy of this I've ever seen--and the alternate music makes it that much better.
Umatic! 😎
Well hello there OA! Didn't expect you to be here.
@@FuzzyMemoriesTV Given the timeframe, I would've guessed X-1 Beta.
Man that brings back so many great memories ❤️
What a rare find! Hearing the classic animated (and wholesome) sign off with a relaxing variation of the 1975 theme is very cool! That's before the famous soundtrack one.
This concludes our schedule of events for today. If you've missed a program or would like to see one a second time, feature presentations are repeated throughout the month on Home Box Office. Consult your program guide for exact dates and times.
Wasn't that the sign-off announcement they've used when HBO launched in 1972?
@@JHollowayNetwork Yes, that's right.
Thank you for posting this--I'm under the weather right now and signoffs always relax me--I had never seen this variation!:)
Hope you feel better soon, Megan. Glad that this made you feel relaxed.
I hope you get well quickly. I agree. It's relaxing and easy listening to help you fall asleep
I'm going to make a playlist of things like this for whenever your sick or sad or feeling down.
I really like this different take on the HBO sign-off theme! While I do think I prefer the original horn tune, this one gives me 70s sitcom theme song vibes, and I like that a lot.
I feel like I'm about to enter a Kmart!
I would estimate that this version of the sign off had been in use since the spring of 1975 around the time HBO introduced its logo a few months before it went national via satellite on 9/30/75.
It was likely gone by mid-1977 (along with the.dove slide that preceded it) and replaced by the more familiar version. And yes, that is the same music that ended up on Home Theater Network, with the music for the dove slide being used for the Travel Channel tags on HTN in the 1980s.. HBO likely ceased using that music around mid-1977, well before HTN signed on in September 1978. HTN kept that music package for its entire run until it went dark in early 1987.
I'm starting to think that this was a custom music package for HBO, rather than just library stuff. Since HTN used it later, this reminds me somewhat of a similar instance of repurposed theme music (ESPN using the old Satellite News Channel package for Sportscenter in the mid-to-late '80s).
The defunct 1980's movie channel HTN(Home Theater Network) used a variation of the sign off music for promos, bumpers, and feature intros.
It's the same melody as the feature presentation idents from 1975, but this time it sounds like the Carpenters instead of disco. I like it.
A beautiful work of TV Signoff Animation!! HBO is still the GOAT!!
And, to think the sleeping boy at 0:57-0:59 is in his 50s, if not his 60s now.
Back in early-mid 70s my brothers friend had a apartment with cable TV and went away for the weekend. He said we could stay there over weekend and watch his TV, first time I ever saw cable and or HBO.
This Is Home Box Office Brought To You By Time Life,, We Wish You A Good Night!!
When TV was classy.
It was.
Luv this stuff thanks for bringing it back. Wish I still had my old vcr tapes.
Even with an announcer announcing the sign-off!
I Always Watch This Video Just Before Going To Sleep.
The alternate music was a pleasant surprise. Great copy!
The music is also reminiscent to HBO’s 1975 intro
Only once did I ever see a sign-off on HBO after staying up really late on a Sunday night to watch the animated "Watership Down".
We had IT & HBO back then 😂
God, I miss those days.
The music used for this signoff sounds less melancholy than the other one. And hey, we get a proper signoff announcement as well!
and that’s where I end the day. Goodnight everyone!
If that bird image was on a shirt, I would buy one.

Wow! Great find. Interesting voice over part but I have to say, either because I'm used to the other music or because I find this one a little more upbeat (not reminiscent of one going to sleep for the night), I like the other one better.
I can kinda see why this one didn't stick. It sounds too much like 'sign on' or 'late evening' material than 'bedtime'.
Background music played during the sign-off animation reminds me of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” theme “You’re gonna make it after all…”
HBO was only distributed to the East Coast, before being uplinked nationally (via C-Band Satellite) in September 1975.
You knew you were up super late when HBO signed off. Your only hope at that point was if WGN or Channel 7, Channel 2 or Channel 5 in Chicago were still showing an old movie.
Those were the days!
@@ChristopherSobieniak Yep. There were some great old movies on those stations, and also WFLD Channel 32. Movies that you can't even find any more.
@@jasonhickox9646 True, replaced by pointless infomercials on some new thing to buy.
@@ChristopherSobieniak True that.

This is so awesome as a possum with a blossom--especially for me given that neither my late mom nor I ever subscribed to HBO. Such a lovely close-down!! :) :) :) :)
Just watched your librarian video to take your temperature. I definitely want some of what you're on.
@@PrometheusZandski LOL!! Thanks lots!! :) :)
I wasn't born yet, but this is so BEAUTIFUL! On a side note, I think they were inspired by Australia ending their TV with two kangaroos to do this.
“aired in Local Texas cable television” are they talking about Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, or what?

But now it is

holy shit new hbo signoff music just dropped
It’s the music that we’re later used for the Home Theater Network (aka HTN)
@@Musicradio77Network HTN also did the Sign off but it's a whole lot different music than this video ruclips.net/video/TKzSvnXfLi0/видео.html also notice the cut in at the very beginning of the Sign off
1976?..our neighborhood was not even close to be wired for cable....and if it was, we couldn't afford it, let alone HBO..😂
This is the earliest video footage of HBO from the '70s.
This also marked the oldest Pay TV footage in the history of uploading RUclips videos!

Interesting. Was this originally from a Betamax tape or a different format in use in 1976?
I really miss the old times
Umatic.
Now we get HBO Max 24/7. 🌝
HBO signing off? Like…until morning?
I hope the employees of HBO got home OK. Brontosauruses are hard to lash to a post.
Just ask Fred Flintstone. Yabba dabba doo!
