    Is it just me, or is the voting system kinda meh?
    Personally, I want to vote for Renew Europe but I am bound by the party in my country that joined the group.
    What if I do not like the party in my country that is connected to the respective European one?
    Grind my teeth and choose only one of the two?

    Why not give me the ability to directly vote for European parties?

      It probably depends on how much do you trust the party, that you dont like, to do what ReNew wants to do in European Parliament
      If they are commited to voting with ReNew, you should vote for them.
      If they are in ReNew gropu just because they need a group to be in, and they will not vote like ReNew, then it is probably best to listen to your hart

      Many countries require local representatives to be elected. This is to ensure each region gets its fair attention. There is a real risk that if people can vote for Europarties, that a few big politicians will come to represent the entire party, obtain all the power, and the elections would be severely less democratic. This effect is already present in countries like the USA and France.

    I personally dislike the indirect voting system. Not only I have access to only 3 out of 8 parties (EPP, S&D, ECR). I also need to deal with parties in my country changing their names and structure (like anyone else's country btw.). This change doesn't give me a 100% assurance what EU parliament they are going to align with until I see a ballot or actively observe them on, for example the internet. Direct voting would solve many problems like this and problem of some votes being worth like 0.98 of itself because population to votes ratio simply cannot be 100% accurate when number of seats isn't equal to voters (vote in Cyprus'll be more worth than in France for example).

      Still, I've got to admit, with the mess that the UK government did with Brexit, I seem to be more interested in EU politics than I am of UK politics, Brexit really put the EU on the map for many Brits, but it's just a shame it led to the UK leaving the EU and not having a voice in the union.

      First of all, I find it unfortunate that you reduce Volt's election program to the idea that they don't want to bring about change. In my opinion, Volt is actually quite revolutionary in this regard. Let me briefly summarize the key points: Volt is a pragmatic, progressive pan-European party that advocates for digitalization, fighting climate change, and social justice, among many other things. What sets them apart from other left-liberal parties in Europe is their vision of a federal Europe strengthening and restructuring of European Union institutions to make them more democratic, less bureaucratic, and globally autonomous. Now, regarding your question about Volt's stance on declining birth rates: I'd like to point out that you could do some research yourself by looking up their freely available election program online. However, I'll address it here as well. The declining birth rates are a consequence of demographic changes, but why is this happening? Quoting from the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb; Informationen zur politischen Bildung Nr. 350/2022 Die Ursachen der Geburtenentwicklung; [I'm not allowed to share links on RUclips]): "Important factors include money, female employment, gender equality, family policy, partner choice, and access to and attitudes toward contraception." Since we surely wouldn't question gender equality, let's focus on money: Children are expensive (at least where I live)! Politics can improve the conditions for families and reduce costs. Affordable childcare, parental leave benefits, flexible working hours, and family-friendly infrastructure are crucial factors. Therefore, Volt [Selection] calls for a EU-wide child benefit and aims to redistribute income and wealth in favor of middle and lower income groups. However, this is not the only way to counteract demographic change; we could and should also consider migration. Volt's visions [Selection] include expanding legal pathways for migration, promoting time-limited migration of skilled workers, achieving the right to family reunification, ensuring social, political, and economic participation for all people, supporting migrants in the education system and simplifying the recognition of foreign-certified qualifications. I hope that I have been able to bring Volt's positions - especially on demographic change - closer to you, that you have formed an opinion, and perhaps want to continue researching on your own. Regardless of this, I also advise you also to make your choice of party dependent on several problem areas and not to assume that no change will take place anyway.

It would be fantastic if we could vote for the pan-European party directly instead of voting a local party that then is part of a larger family. One other annoying thing: I don't have access to some of the political families, as our parties are all part of either EPP, S&D, Renew, ECR or ID. No Greens or United Left.

Also, my chat with members here gave me the impression people aren't very invested into the ideas of the European party as much as you'd expect. For example, they'd like to cut taxes more than provide enhanced public services, environmental protection wasn't ever discussed in any way, idk... kind of very much run of the mill center-right ideas seemed to me to prevail, and I for one am not attracted to the right on most things.

By voting for Volt or another small party, you are making the party better known and bigger with your vote. It can even reach the party funding of 3% in France, which is quite possible. You also show the big parties which issues are important to you. Imagine you want to get into politics to get money and power. Would you join a big party or a small one? Probably a large one, as they have many more MPs and are better known. In the small parties, people put their heart and soul into it and really want something for the people. Besides, elections were created to give your vote to a party that stands up for your interests. No offence meant, but I would always listen to my heart when voting =)

      @@drifty2294 I get what you're saying, and I agree as long as a small party gets at least somewhat close to the parliamentary threshold, or as long as you can make a local splurge, so to speak. Volt in Romania, however, is below 0.1%. :) My vote won't make any difference whatsoever, since the electoral threshold is 5% - they would need to convince about 50 times more people than they currently do.
      That being said, while the idea that "every vote counts" is a very feel-good idea and sounds nice, it's actually quite false. An individual vote changing things has such a low probability in any country, but especially one with 16 million voters, that it's not even worth discussing. However, a block of voters is a very different thing. It's a bit like how a single laborer can never win against a big corporation, but a labor union has much better odds. In my humble opinion, it's a better option to become part of a coalition of voters that the bigger parties have to account for and then threaten support collectively, even if it doesn't support every issue close to my heart but only some of them, rather than trying to go at it alone and wasting my vote.

    Sry but the EU was meant to be a trade organisation not a Federal States of Europe, I have both family in Germany and France but I am fed up with two countries deciding what every other country should do or not do. There is very little in common between Denmark and Greece or Portugal and Latvia. EU was also created so that there would be peace between, again mostly Germany vs France.. And not even certain goods can be shipped from Germany to Sweden to name one example. Just look at the migration crises that have caused so many social and economical issues for the countries that took in the most, I am all for helping people I come from a war myself and I came from a country where being gay was/is a crime. So so many of my countrymen did not come for any valid refugee reason and now they are trying to implement exactly the same regime I fled from in my new country and if they do not get what they want they cry racism night and day. I on the other hand embraced my new country their laws, culture, tradition Why would I flee if I wanted the same as I had in my country of birth? But most EU-counties let these other non valid refugees just do whatever they want and I am now targeted again since they jump us who have defected from their religion and we are prime targets once again. and most EU countries do not give a damn. EU has failed on all accounts in my book. Why should I have to flee once more and where to the UK, Americas where? I learned Swedish within a year and have studied, have worked I am employed and never committed a crime and still the EU wants to bring in the wrong kind of immigrants who is only here to use the welfare systems and who do not respect the people or country they are guests in.

    The EU has been more destructive to The Netherlands than being a force for good, not to mention it was forced upon us. I dont know on who Im going to vote for just yet, but I do know my vote will got to an Dutch anti EU/Euro party. Finally its possible for the anti EU/Euro block in Brussels to become the second largest political block. I think the EU and Europhiles will be in for a rude awakening of the amount of people who unlike previous elections will go to poles, and will vote for anti or sceptic EU/Euro parties.

    I will not be voting for anyone because I lost my EU citizenship on 31st January 2020 at the decision taken by 17 million other people in 2016 when I was 11 years old. I love direct democracy, and it was people’s right to vote for what they did, but Brexit was such a mistake by my fellow British citizens.
    Still I am a citizen of a member of the Council of Europe and proudly European... I have many friends online who will be able to vote and I will be following the election as it takes place, especially as how much the EU impacts us here too.
    I also will be able to vote in local and national elections here in Britain this year and wish you all luck in your giant (almost continent wide, except a few places) election!
    Edit: I am lucky though because belonging to the Liberal Democrats party here I get to elect delegates to the congress of ALDE, the European party of liberals and Democrats associated to the Renew group.

      May I ask the question. When I look into the link provided in the description to find the affiliation of political parties, and search for Volt it shows me that it's a German party under Europarlament's "Green" political group. How come it's not under Renew Europe?
      Assuming I am from Germany, and I am pro European Federation, should I vote for FDP then instead of Vote?

    • @waetschie
      @waetschie 3 месяца назад +9

      @@rustix3 No. Volt is a paneuropean Party and not a German one. The German fraction is the only one that got into parliament last elections. We would have created our own parliamentary group if we could, but we were too small. The decision was between the Greens and Renew Europe and we decided for the Greens because they made us the better offer (more committees, more freedom). It's not so much about shared ideas.
      For the FDP I can only say, that it's one of the worst parties of its group because it doesn't make progressive policies and their economic ideas just help the rich. They don't want to unify Europe as we do.

    • @_blank-_
      @_blank-_ 3 месяца назад

      @@waetschie Why unify Europe when we have different ideals, interests, histories, values and that states that are too big always end up lacking democracy (example: the US, India)? It's our diversity and sovereignty that have made Europe a powerhouse in the first place. And seeing the last decades, the more powers the EU gets, the poorer and less relevant our countries get on the global stage. Brussels is just lobbys' HQs.
