  • 3/30 Preludes by Bartolomeo Campagnoli
Recorded live from my practice room, Spring 2024
    Edition by Philip Marten
Bartolomeo Campagnoli (1751-1827) was a prolific composer of solo violin and viola music, most famously his 41 etudes for viola. Much of his music goes unnoticed, and few recordings exist of it. These preludes are particularly unknown, but provide a solo violin equivalent to the preludes from “Well-Tempered Clavier” by J.S. Bach, being studied in both technique and composition. Like “Well-Tempered Clavier,” these Preludes were likely composed as educational materials, and are extraordinarily effective as such, but they are also beautiful, and creatively constructed. Even Carl Flesch counted these Preludes among those works for violin in danger of being forgotten but worth preserving for their technical and compositional prowess. These recordings and the edition of the music is an attempt to do so.
