Watching this made me realize my horrible posture while sitting. In general, martial arts made me walk like a human should walk. With an upright posture, looking forward. To such a degree, that people noticed. Goju Ryu Karatedo... Scary martial art. One can only gain in at least experiencing it.
@zeHoboCop this kata helps you win fights. When in threat, just assume the position and start breathing like that... soon your shoulders and thighs will be inpenetrable due to you harnessing that inner energy u never know you had..
@ronin954 speed and power are useless when you get hit. you have to know when to be steady like a rock (go) and when to be soft and quick like water (ju) the combination of go and ju is the foundation of goju-ryu karate.
@Zielony18 There are 3 things you should do: 1. Train 2. Train 3. You should then train some more. That is what heard from Sensei Higaoona. Other than that come to an International IOGKF Gashuko and learn from great teachers.
@mzee101 i've been training sanchin for almost two years now ( more if you only take the form itself), but it is still very hard to preform. you have to use all muscles in your body at the same time and you can ony start relexing your mucles when the kata is finished. the sound is nothing more than intense breathing, it is not so hard to do. if you put it all together and do it right normally you won't hold it long enough to finish the kata, what you see is the result of years of training
Sensei Kazuo Terauchi is a STUD!!!! I've been lucky enough to be able to train with him a couple of times, He's a blast!. Great heart, wonderful company, would not want to get him mad though. He enjoyed pounding on me just a wee bit, nothing beats slaps to the stomach while doing crunches. NO WAY could I take Shime like that from Sensei Higaonna. I remember an afternoon training with him, mostly Sanchin and his performance of the Kata was jaw dropping. I am not worthy.. Cheers DD
Actually the sanchin stance that is used allows one to take shots between the legs, without getting 'bag tagged'. Morio sensei is simply checking for proper stance, when striking between the thigh region.
This breathing pattern is for kata training only. When fighting and you become winded you can use a softer less pronounced breath. The idea of Sanchin & breathing is to develop what the Chinese call "Iron Shirt"
@jgalpin360 you said you should breathe out all the air with the techniqe but i learned you have to save a small amount of air in order to be able to use another techniqe without having to breath in first, because in battle the time it takes to to breathe in is just enough for your opponet to attack you. as you probely know your body's defence is way weaker while breathing in. by the way, a wonderfull demonstration of kata saanchin
Never had the pleasure of meeting Terauchi Sensei. Have trained a while with Chinen and he calls the red hand marks from the slaps on the shoulders & body "Chinese tattoo"
He's an absolute monster. Speaks very little English, so you have to communicate with him through very few words and he just demos what he wants you to do. He is SO strong, but a master of karate. He took a session at the last IOGKF budosai and I was partnered with this enormous Polish guy, must have been three times my strength and probably 6" taller than me at least, Sensei Terauchi found it most amusing as I tried to 'defeat' my 'opponent' while doing Kakie 😄
@xSkarprox well if your not a gojuryu karate-ka it will be very hard to understand. this kata is used to develop mucles, power, endurance and an iron body (not litelerry of course).
I've heard stories about Sensei Kazuo Terauchi. My Sensei told me the last time he trained at his DoJo, Sensei Kazuo Terauchi had his conditioning rock sitting at the door covered in blood. I'm told he takes conditioning to such extremes he will cover anything in blood he uses, and a fresh coat of blood on his rock every day. lol.
i dont practice goju, or even karate, but this kata is a mother source of knowledge regardless of your style. i do it poorly and still it changed my art forever.in fact i would say if you learned only one form ever make it this one. second would be tai-chi long form or siu lim tao. i do those poorly also..but my point is sanchin kata is invaluable to any martial artist , a lesson in mechanics and structure and energy. but be careful, it can make you a bit crazy if done wrong, no joke.
Sorry, you are incorrect. Please look for the "1936 Meetings of karate masters" You will see their change from to-di to the modern kanji of karate meaning "empty, limitless, etc.. You may also note that Hanashiro Chomo had been using the modern kanji since the early 1900's.
i have always been curious about the use of shime is it to build bodily strength also why does he make that sound (how?) it looks like amazing training maybe i'm not at that level yet
@Yamtendo na, its do with the stance. your legs should be slightly bent to prevent yourself getting kicked in the nuts. This guys just showing everyone that his stance is correct by kicking him there.
I'm by no means a master (shotokan for 10 years, got another 90 years to go haha), but i'd personally encourage students if i had any to create their own katas and techniques. Only after you have an amazing and super firm grasp of the basics in your style though. It's hard to create a "better" reverse punch for example if your normal reverse punch is garbage ;) Keep practicing and once you master the basics and what's already in your style, then branch out and improve it :D
Karate means 'empty hands' there is no weapons kata in karate. However, most Okinawan dojo and some Japanese dojo with Okinawan roots that practice 'KOBUDO" or the weapon arts of Okinawa. I bet that if you search Okinawan Kobudo you will find what you are looking for. Good luck!
Very good video. Very good. I hate this kata with a passion. What my sensei does with those of use who have a hard time consentrating is to also try and make us laugh. If you start chuckeling near the beginning the rest of the kata is not gonna go so well.
COuld someone tell me how to stand properly in this position ? At my Dojo they tried to teach me proper stance but even a single, little push of a finger could make me fall (either from front, back or side), I can't make my stance so strong so it would be able to endure any pushes from sides....
Wilhelm Albatross not the nuts. Checking to see if inner thighs are turned in. This stance is useful for blocking or catching a kick and can curb with so much power that it can break a kicker's leg. Sanchin Dachi is the one true battle stance.
both men are clearly masters of thier art !

That was good focus and tightness.
So many good things in one Kata.
Hey, this was during the world Budosai at the budokan in Naha! I got to see this in person! It had some quite interesting demos. Thanks for sharing!

That old man is tank!!!

I say this often in the dojo.

peaceful warriors. karate no matter what style is awesome in its own way

I like This Kata this is one that i like doing at home. Osu!
Ztrigwell, he bends his knees so his opponate doesnt break his knees also provides better balance and center

Parabéns Mestre... Impressionante. Uma verdadeira demonstração de controle. Realmente a máquina humana é Divina
that guys got balls of steel !!!
@Zielony18 More practice and learning to link the body parts together

@ronin954 Master Egami? What do you mean?
COuld someone tell me how to stand properly in this position ? At my Dojo they tried to teach me proper stance but even a single, little push of a finger could make me fall (either from front, back or side), I can't make my stance so strong so it would be able to endure any pushes from sides....
I do that too. Just one finger push and many lose balance.
very true..
Can someone please explain to me what is happening here, I don't really understand it at all..
@takeshimiyagi it should be impossible if he's in shanchin o.o
why the fuck does he constantly kick him in the balls? oO
Wilhelm Albatross not the nuts. Checking to see if inner thighs are turned in. This stance is useful for blocking or catching a kick and can curb with so much power that it can break a kicker's leg. Sanchin Dachi is the one true battle stance.
@devildog2155 I get it too... like you said... but... DAMN!!!
when I do sanchin my sensei hits me with a stick it sounds funny but it is true
Sounds like he has something in his throat....
