Dried up due to lack of moisture. Fuel prices and fertilizer is a big worry. I have always said farmers are the biggest gamblers in the world but also have the biggest faith in God. Prayers for to you for a good crop.

Over the years had 2 truck diesel engines burn antifreeze. Both cases was a hairline crack in the injector cup allowing antifreeze to enter with the fuel and creates some interesting colors on the top of the piston. Put new cups in and successfully took away the problem.
I pray that Our Lord will watch over your family and your land and provide what is needed. We are living in some Interesting times and all we really have is faith in our Almighty. God Bless You All.

Bob, your experience had showed when you stopped the Big Bud, I think you will find there's a fine hair crack in the cylinder head, its slowly leaking into the cylinder head, I think it will be OK until you finish seeding, then as Scott said needs to be checked, the heads have to come off, a new rebuild will fix it, you fellows are very good at fixing just about every thing, so it wont be long & you will have it up & going again, I believe you will have a wonderful harvest this season,so don't worry, Regards Trevor.W.Bacelli. Cummins KTA 600 . Before you tear down the upper end of that engine looking for the internal coolant leak , check the aftercooler assembly in the intake housing. I’ve had several over the years that developed a leak in the tubes of that aftercooler. The coolant leaks into the intake air and gets burned up in combustion.
I’ve yet in my career to see a blown head gasket that doesn’t pressurize the cooling system. Best of luck on the search for the leak.

i know a person that had a tractor with this issue, they replaced the cap, turns out someone solder the radiator and used the wrong soldering, I didn't know there was a wrong solder but told tractors need a heaver solder, told if you use a cheap knock off solder, it can lift the head gaskets and make a leak, didn't even know that was a thing, told you have to replace the gasket and fix the radiator.

  • @greatnorthernn-3154

If coolant consumption is a known issue and the unit has to run it would be best to dump the antifreeze and run straight water. Antifreeze in anything but the coolant passages is a bad situation.
The situation here in east central ND went from extreme drought last summer to a potential preventive plant situation due to spring flooding this season so don't put too much stock in "long range forecasts". If the acres aren't planted it's guaranteed crop failure.

Once had a gas engine lose head gasket between water jacket and a cylinder. By the time we could get to a shop it was going 40 miles between radiator fills. But it never got into the oil, just out the exhaust. ONE cylinder definitely had all the carbon cleaned out. Tiny leak, but the effect was obvious.

One farmers pain is another farmers success. El Niño for you in the north, La Niña for us down in the south. There has been to much rain for Eastern Australia recently. I'm no weather expert but I assume that when we have El Niño in Australia the tables are turned and it means good rain for you.
You are not wrong about how it feels to go through drought and that it's hard to put into words. Australia experienced one of the worst droughts ever from 2017-19. Just remember, every action has an equal reaction. We are proof of that here with 3 unbelievably wet years after 3 unbelievably dry years. The tables will once again turn!

The old Cummins when they "dropped a liner" would go for a few weeks on Liebherr Excavators, you don't get water in the oil right away but there will be some whiteish smoke on startup and eventually you will have to loosen the radiator cap in order to run it. As the liner drops the head gasket goes, it was only one cylinder on the old NT-280's that usually went. If you don't crack the radiator cap you'll find out how good the heater core is in time and your hoses.

Could be a head gasket. At least its not leaking into the oil or trans. That would be bad since the water & oil creates an acid that then circulates throughout that system ruining any soft bearings & bushings. Best of luck with that & the rains. Have been praying for all farmers presently with the horrible issues that are in front of you all. I heard that fertilizer is not only super expensive but also the railroad is not shipping any from the gulf area producers outward. I must say that I do reallly miss the view from the Hills area. Hey guys. Its probably not a good idea to keep running an engine the is ingesting anti freeze into a cylinder. The heat causes a varnish like substance that can ruin pistons, rings and cause scoring on the walls of the cylinder. You’d be better running pure water until you can get time to fix it. Sorry about the bad outlook for the year. Some of my family farmed in Saskatchewan and faced similar years.

    Thanks for the drone footage.
Sorry to hear about the big bud 600. I am not a top notch mechanic but my guess is some how some way antifreeze is getting by the head gasket.
My guess is you should pull the heads and see what has happened. Might be the head gaskets. Have they been apart lately??????
Sorry about this. That is machinery for you.
    Hang in there!!!!!!!!
Sorry to hear about a possible drought in your area. Wow.
I agree with you to cut back on seeding. No sense putting seed in the dry ground if it will not have the moisture to grow.

For the "sick" Bud, I'd much rather work on it compared to today's equipment. The Big Buds are so simple and easy to work on besides their size. Even if what you're saying about the cap, honestly, it still shouldn't be building that much pressure. You're right though, you still need to look at the heads.

watchout for the gasket blowing into the cylinders and then the engine locking up die to the coolant on top of pistons

From what Robert said, it sounds like the 600 has a head gasket issue..its pushing the coolant out the exhaust. When the coolant level drops too low, the temp sensor has nothing to read so the gauge wont work. Even tho its not pressurizing the crankcase and the coolant isnt ending up in the pan, If theres anymore work to be done with the 600 before its pulled apart, use water only. Thats one of the few things Ive learned in 40+ years working on race cars ;) Fingers crossed its a "simple" and inexpensive fix for yall!!

The farmers mantra “it will be better next year”. Lot of tough choices if we had the answers we wouldn’t have to work so hard

5 things from my past experience ; coolant gauge quits reading when no coolant on sensor/bulb . and #2 , Kt19 famous for popping head gaskets . your ideas of oil levels , excellent . now does it have an intercooler??? that could eat some if coolant pressure over boost pressure .
a 4th ; IF head or sleeve bad in large way , it will vaporize coolant and blow out in steam . and IF at right place ; i have seen 2 instances where a sleeve pinhole will EAT coolant and then piston STOP with rings over the pin hole ......
    just some idears

I'm so sorry the dry fields and no rain keeps on and on. I went thru that in the 80s. It wasn't as bad as you have had it, but 88 and 89 and 80 were the killers for so many and high interest rates. I pray that things get better for you guys. Good luck

Thats a major setback on that machine guys. Pulling the head off, new gasgets. Can you make some overflow on that coolant system, with a return, so the presure can get out, and the coolant flows back in the system? God bless to all. Harry

I feel your pain with the drought. I've seen more droughts than I care to remember myself. The irony is that when the Pacific Ocean gives us a drought in Australia you have it good and vice versa.
Be thankful that you have insurance and some form of subsidies however small because here we have zero help and when it goes bad it's no one else's problem but your own. And when it goes bad it's not just a little bit bad.
I've learnt that droughts come and they eventually go.

Man, I can't imagine going through last year and this without insurance or federal aid. I don't see how farmers could make it - there are too many uncontrollable, devastating variables.

Australian farmers are in a different situation as most of us buy our own land . That means we can farm the production and also use our capital investment as leverage. 70% of Australian ag production is sold for export so subsidized food production is pointless.
Because we aren't subsidized our land prices are somewhat related to reliability of seasons and gross dollars of output per HA.
When I was young I was somewhat jealous of subsidized nations but now I realize we are the lucky ones.

The big question is, "When does a person say enough is enough for throwing money in the form of chemicals, fertilizer, seed, and fuel etc. to plant a field when it is so dry?" It is a tough call. 🤔

It's good to see someone else that likes to still use a regular hand pump grease gun. They work fine and aren't as heavy and bulky as the electric ones.
