I like your point that we're not perfect in our first language, so it's natural we'd make mistakes in our second. I've also been going for 16 years and still do regular daily studying, so it's definitely a long road that slowly keeps improving. And thanks Sara for the shout-out!
Yes, it's absolutely true! You cannot be perfect in a foreign language because you'll never be *perfect* in any language.
That's so amazing to hear that you study daily, I respect that a lot, I still fall into the trap of thinking sometimes that other people have "completed" their study but it really is such an ongoing process. And my pleasure to share your channel! I love what you do!

As an anatomist with a background in the neurophysiology of sleep, I can confirm that sleep counts as studying. You encode memories during REM sleep- basically your brain is repeating important things from your day over and over again and making those connections stronger. If you don't sleep after learning, you won't encode those memories.

@@mollyapteros Great question! Unfortunately, the answer is 'Definitely not.' You are repeating things from when you were awake, not taking things in while you are asleep.

This is why I make sure to get some rest before an exam, even if it’s a nap! Edit: I also take a shower before an exam if I’m really nervous. I find it calming and give myself the biggest pep talk in the shower😅
This was really comforting! I’ve been learning on and off since 2015 and generally feel crummy about how slow I’m advancing but being able to see you getting corrections, still practicing grammar, fixing mistakes in the subtitles or just straight up using the English word instead is just like a warm hug to this part of my brain lol.
It’s nice to get a reminder that learning a language is HARD and all these 1 year learners and polyglots are exceptions rather than the standard
Also as much as I love my uni teachers, language classes over zoom just don’t hit the same 😭
It is so refreshing to hear that you don't have to learn a language quiclky! Learning a language should be fun, but somehow I feel like there is a pressure to learn fast and be fluent in no time.

I was born and raised till 9 in Syd and still my entire family live in Australia.
So logically my first lang is English but I spent most of my time in Korea after 9y/o, which made me feel more comfortable to use Korean lang in daily basis.
Learning and speaking a language is not a simple thing. It contains cultural background, of course it's all about your surroundings.
If the language you've tried to learn is what you actually use in daily life, you should make a condition to use it intentionally which means it is fair enough to take some time to be fluent!
It definitely needs a decent amount of time to use it fluently, till your brain absorbs it profusely, like shove it into your subconsciousness. Rome wasn't built in a day;)
its always good to hear someone who learned the exact same way i do, up and down for a long time,, and its so comforting to find others that also didnt learn in a year or less, but are now fluent in the language ~ makes me feel very validated ~~ thank you for these tips sara !! 💖💖💖
I've been learning Korean for two years as a hobby, so I can only learn for a few hours every week. I learn new things and then I have to relearn them again, sometimes a few times before I can use it properly and even when I think I know how to use it I still have to check if I'm right. It's just normal.
I used to teach Spanish to foreigners and everybody wants to learn Spanish in a few months hahaha They used to ask me the first day they join class: will I be able to speak Spanish in 6 months? I've been learning English for 22 years, since I was 4 years old and there is still so much I don't know and that I need to learn. As Sara said there's not an end when learning a language. Great video Sara!

I really needed this video. I've been learning Korean on and off for almost 3 years now, and while I felt like I was learning very quickly at the beginning and could study for hours at a time, I got to a point where I couldn't make anything - even the most basic concepts -stick in my brain no matter how many times I reviewed. That (along with dealing with the pandemic and other life issues) left me feeling so discouraged and unmotivated, and now I find myself barely studying at all anymore. But this video has helped me realize that it's okay to struggle or slow down as long as I keep trying and that I shouldn't feel defeated for not understanding things quickly. I'm going to try to get back into studying regularly and not be so hard on myself if it takes me multiple tries to understand something.
(Also I really wish I was still in college so I could do an exchange program, but I graduated about 6 years ago and work full-time now so sadly that's out of the picture... If any younger person reads this and is considering an exchange, please do it! I didn't and it's one of my biggest regrets as an adult. )
I needed this so much! I've been interested in learning a new language since high school but I never got serious/my first textbook until college. It was an introduction to Business Japanese. I was highly enjoying it but afterwards I thought - I can just finish the textbook by self study - not realizing that sometimes textbooks are written in different ways and it wasn't written in a way that worked for me. I became highly demotivated after trying for years to finish that book. I continued to just watch anime and listening to Japanese, then I found Korean. Got into Korean music and stopped listening to Japanese TV & music. Just before the pandemic I decided to try it again after 5 years, started looking into taking the JLPT N5 and bought a new textbook that was highly recommended. When the pandemic hit I thought: cool I will have all of this free time, this will be good for my learning.... but mental health definitely also plays a role in it. I crashed. Didn't touch Japanese until Feb of this year, kept with it until work was insane. Got farther than I ever have and now trying to get a study routine that I can try keeping when work is busy. Then you made this video which honestly has helped in so many ways. Thank you! :) We are the same age and started getting interested in 2nd languages around the same time... I feel encouraged by you to try again and see where I can be with my 2nd language in another 5 years!

I've been learning korean for a year and half now and it was your videos that were part of what made me curious and pick it up. This is reassuring! Thank you for making this video! I always feel guilty, like I'm not doing enough because I struggle so much. I feel like I've learned nothing in 3 years, but then I hear a conversation or watch a movie and don't rely on subtitles and I'm always shocked that I've absorbed more than I thought I had.
Also, your ipad timeline was the cutest thing I've ever seen! I can't wait for more Artist Sara! Also, double love for the illustration at the end. I adore you.
I like that RUclipsrs that learned another language are being honest with their process because a lot of us find you all after you’ve already learned the language and have been studying it for a while but when you say I also was frustrated or I’ve been doing this for five years or I’ve been doing this for 10 years and lets us know that it’s not something that is quick for everyone
Thank you for sharing your story Sara! It’s always reassuring to hear stories like yours! I remember starting out and how I had like multiple mental breakdowns within the first week, months of learning Korean. But after talking to my professor, hearing people say how learning is a lifelong journey, and self reflection, I know it’s a journey. I have to remind myself we’re all on different learning paths~ it’s nice to know you’re still learning after all these years ☺️

I'm learning and I'm older and I get impatient with myself but also I'm going to share this with my daughter who has been living in Korea for almost 2 years now and is discouraged because she thinks her level 3 Korean is "trash" she's only been learning for about 3 years of self study. Thanks for sharing your learning journey and tips! My Korean journey has been a long one, too. I learned 한글 21 years ago because I wanted to be able to read along with lyrics (I had been introduced to Korean music in 1999 and fell in love with the language). I learned a few basic words and phrases around 2000-2002 but then I started focusing on Japanese for a while and while I never forgot how to read 한글, I forgot most of what I had learned. I went through the first 2 levels of TTMIK when they started but then got demotivated again and didn't pick studying Korean back up until about 2016ish so I had to start from the beginning again. I grew up bilingual after learning English as a kid and was frustrated with how slowly my Korean was going. I visited Korea in 2018 and every time I interacted in Korean it was mentally exhausting. I thought I must be so bad at this compared to everyone else. I have to remind myself that it's not a competition and I can tell I've improved since then and to keep practicing.
I've been doing self-study for about 2-3 years on and off and for a long time felt like it wasn't getting anywhere with it. Knowing that you have been studying, both actively and having lulls, for 14 years, makes me feel so much better about where I am with the language. I think it's so important to know that mistakes are okay. It was the hardest hurdle I had to get over when I started to learn. Now, having been studying by myself for the better part of this year, I can pick certain words and phrases and write them. And being consistent is so helpful! Even if one day you sit and actually study and another day you listen to Korean music and watch Korean TV shows.

Very motivational video! Thank you for the resources, tips and advice! Very interesting to see your timeline of progression as well. Since you mentioned that you studied Japanese for awhile, I am curious to know if you had any difficulty separating the two similar-ish languages, or if you noticed any big similarities that helped you learn the other? I am in the opposite situation as you, I have been studying Japanese for nearly ten years and now I am trying to tackle Korean, but I find it a little difficult to approach. Would be cool to hear your thoughts on that in the future ^^

It's a relief to see that yourself and other people take a very long time to study Korean. I've been studying for 7 years now and am very far from what I consider an intermediate speaker. Even if that's what my teachers say...
I'm taking note of your tips to study vocabulary... that's my main weak point haha Grammar is relatively ok when I understand the nuances with other grammar points, but remembering all the new vocabulary (especially when it's not used on a daily basis) is my weak spot.

Thank you so much for this honest vid. I no longer click on those 'I learnt Korean in 1-day' vids. Just nonsense. You are right, language learning never stops, that's why I constantly keep up with English, French and the other languages that I speak. I am late for the spaces smh
When you studied Korean in Australia, were the classes taught in English or in Korean, or a mix of both? Did you feel you learnt more when they were taught fully in Korean during your exchange? I just started teaching ESL and I feel so bad for my students when I start talking in English and they get flustered 😭
Reading before bed is such a good idea. I work full time and am doing a business degree full time so Korean study has pretty much stopped. I'm on my phone in bed up to between 11pm and 2.00am so reading my TTMIK books before bed might help both my study and sleep 😅
I've been taking lessons for 6 months and I am just at the point of learning verbs, counters, etc. This made me feel so much better! Thank you

Hi Sara, I'm new here 😊 Amazing how you speak Korean 😮👌 I have just started taking courses .. My goal is to go to Korea often and train TKD with them 🥋🇰🇷🤙😎 Therefore I decided to start learning Korean because it will also be more fun to hang out with the people there 🇰🇷❤🥋
I also started self studying when I was 14, now I'm 23 😂 I only started Hangul, I think its the most important to know their alphabet from reading and writing it. Now, I'm learning phrases first, from months, numbers, food names but I still have a hard time constructing the syllables ._. Sigh Since I cant afford classes, I will go to youtube like you did. RUclips is Life 😂👌 And yes, I love watching Kdrama, variety ahows and Kpop, and I'm learning Korean, slowly, but improving ^_^ Thanks for the video, its really inspiring ;-;

You give me hope that I’ll be able to have clear dictation, eventually. When I went to Korea, I was basically bullied the whole time, because pronunciation is so hard with an Australian accent 😂

Hello. Question, how many other languages do you speak, and which. Are there similarities with Korean - gramatically speaking, or in the way you learned them? I sometimes sense that sentences are constructed like in German (inversed) - could that be a correct assumption? Thanks
I am so slow in German... it's my second foreign language 😃 I also want to learn Russian but I still can't start seriously, although I understand it 70% and speak it like 1% 😃

Kids in the States spend a solid 12 years learning their native language in school & many still don't master it. I don't expect anyone to learn a second language much faster.
I am learning Mandarin Chinese in school. I am from, and live in the United States. I’d like to learn more languages including Korean. I’d like to learn Korean because I have a favorite K-Pop called “PSY”. Most languages that I wanna learn are Slavic.
I really want to learn korean but next year at my school you have to study a language but theres no korean classes and I really just want to focus on a single language. I might just choose an easier one and study korean at home but idk if that would work out well :'))

I don't know much about Korean but I wonder if you have an accent when you speak? Is there such thing as an Australian Korean accent haha. Or do you sound like a particular region? I know some people who learn English end up with an American or British accent depending on who their teacher was.

I struggle to speak Korean most of the time at home because I was born in Australia
A couple of the people in my Korean class where in the same situation. There weren’t enough opportunities to speak Korean at home so they studied at uni too! It’s so difficult to keep up a language when it’s not the predominant one of that country. 🥲
