- Whats the difference between a Lowden Sheeran and a Regular Lowden? And why are they so much cheaper? Here we discuss the new Sheeran Models and explain the differences
I just got a WO1 and l love it. I have a Lowden 025c from the 90 s. Cedar and Rosewood. The Sheehan has a really sweet sound. One thing Brendan didn’t t mention is that there is no bracing on the back which l think adds to the projection and sustain the guitar has. The guitar doesn’t have much low end but that s one thing l like about it. I have several high end guitars and love how they all have different voices. So the Sheehan fits well for me. It has a really bright sound. Check ‘em out. You might be surprised.
Thanks for watchin!
Thanks for the information Brendan. The laminate certainly wouldn’t be a deal breaker if I were shopping for a guitar in this price range. Yairi has been doing marvelous things with laminate back and sides for a very long time.
That you John. I agree. Will it sound as great as a standard Lowden? No. But they will sound fantastic!
Yairi actually made guitars for Lowden in the 1980s, and George Lowden says that some of the tooling they use at Downpatrick is based on what Yairi used. Gibson uses laminates in their ES range (the 335 is all laminate) and the use of laminates in drum shells is standard, even in professional quality kits -- Gretsch, Yamaha and all the rest boast about the different plies of maple, birch, etc they use and Jerry Marotta, Vinnie Colaiuta and other big-name drummers all use ply drums.
I wonder if there isn't a place for a slightly more expensive but simpler, all-solid Lowden. I'm sure some guitarists will have a bit more money for a guitar in the same price range as a 15-type Martin or 3-series Larrivee but can't stretch to an O-22 Lowden. There are also guitarists who won't be seen dead with an instrument with Ed Sheeran's name on it -- he ain't no Richard Thompson, let's face it. Even Les Paul guitars weren't successful until well after Les Paul ceased to be famous as a musician. It was even discontinued for a while in favour of the SG.
The best ever Lowden era was between 1989 and 2003 when the luthiers that now build Avalon guitars made them. George Lowden did not own the Lowden Guitar Company, nor did he work on any of the guitars during those years. @@IndigoJo
Hey guys, Brendan here... we got our first shipment of Wee Lowdens this week. We only got a small number but there is another big order coming in December. Our first 3 orders are sold out, but im guessing by January they will be in excess and available to sample right in the shop. You guys have been so damn patient and I cant thank you enough for hanging in there. Look forward to getting these little beasts in your hands!
I can tell this guy loves these little lowdown’s I hope to save up and buy both one day from you guys!😄
Having played one of each over the weekend I can say there’s a huge difference acoustically. Wee lowden kicks the sheerans arse, but so it should given the cost
If you have ever played a genuine Wee Lowden like I have at a guitar store, your ruined. No laminate, layered, plywood or "whatever you wish to call it" Sheeran is going to cut it. However the price is out of my range of possibilities. It is an amazing little guitar.
Hi Brendan, thanks for explaining the differences between the original Wee Lowden and the Sheeran guitars.
I'm more interested in this Wee Lowden you used as a prop. So gorgeous! May I know what model this is?
I assumed this is a WL-25 with cedar top. However, I don't see any pick guard on this one, while the official Lowden website shows that this model comes with a pick guard. And, does this one come with a pickup system?
Thanks in advance!
Wee 25, no pick guard on this one ;). Sorry for late reply
@@HeartbreakerGuitars Hahahaha. No worry. Is this particular model (Wee 25 with no pick guard) on sale at your store?
@@HenryWijaya it is in our store!
@@HeartbreakerGuitars Is it this one: heartbreakerguitars.com/collections/lowden-guitars/products/wee-lowden-25-cedar-indian-rosewood-namm-2019-edition
THANKS FOR THE SOUND DEMO!!!
Our pleasure! Come on back for more!
Could you please do an updated video on this?
You mentioned the neck being a one piece rather than the normal three piece or 5 piece that Lowden does, does that mean the new Sheeran guitars will have a truss rod in the neck?
Yes they will!
Yes it absolutely will
@@HeartbreakerGuitars THX
I like one piece necks, do they have a two adjustable truss rod? I like the fact that hard tone woods are used in the laminin. Although Taylor and the Canadian makers of Seagull, Art and Lutherie and four more brands use three layers of the same wood. The results are great for a laminin. I just got a twenty years old Art and Lutherie AMI that I repaired and fine tuned, and the sound amazed me. I had offers to sell it, but it just plays so good, I connected with it too well.
To get to my point, this guitar is in the same ballpark as the Taylor mini and academy guitars along with the Canadian guitars. I don't know the quality yet because there not on the market.
I am considering a Taylor academy for my next guitar. I love parlor guitars, and the Taylor I'm looking at is a larger guitar. What would convince me to shell out an extra $300 for the Loudon?
I have a few of the Academy Series in stock and I think the Lowden is a Superior instrument. No knock to Taylor Academy, they are great, but I think you'd be real happy with a Lowden. Thanks!
Heartbreaker Guitars I think I would to.
great review !!
Thank you very much ronnie!
He doesn't even play it.
Just looking at them very tempting for a different sounding guitar if they do have a Lowden sound which to my ear is very Irish and Celtic sounding and great for that type of music so the proof of the pudding as they say will be when we hear them played by someone who can really play different types of music on them not someone plays just in the first position or just strums the hell out of it
Are the Sheeran guitars 3/4 size? Thanks
There are 2 sizes... the "W" and the "S". The W is a travel size or "3/4" size while the S is closer to a full sized guitar.
Thanks
Price starts at $825 up to $1300... How is that afforable and inspiring for young talent?
Nuray Ozturk Hi thx for comment. Normal Lowdens start at $4k. So it’s relatively much cheaper and more affordable than a traditional Lowden.
@@HeartbreakerGuitars thanks for the quick reply! Sure, I get that and Lowden has beautiful high quality guitars, no offense. But even if 1000 is cheaper than 4000, overall it is still a very high price point and I think too expensive for most young children or students.
I totally get your point. A thousand bucks is a lot of money. But unfortunately it cost a lot of money to build a guitar in Ireland. And to have it built by GL, is another story. Its not cheap, but def more affordable than a actual Lowden. Best of luck in your journey and thanks for the comment! @@WhiteFlowerrr
I know it is a lot of money but I gotta be honest and tell you I cried like a baby for a solid minute when I heard the news. This is a better quality instrument then I ever thought I would get to hold. And now Ed tells me. I get to own one. With that said I totally agree with you it is not cheap, just less expensive.
if I was a hard worker I then I will be grinding to get my guitar having to get a quality instrument for one third of the price I would say its enough. Ain't no free lunch around to give to everyone.
i feel sorry for martin
Me too!
I still would go with Martin.
I honestly don’t get the point of this. Ed said that he wanted an affordable good quality guitar for young singers and guitarists. But wasn’t Ed Sheerans little Martin X signature edition already a good quality well priced guitar?
Not real familiar with the Martin he did. But Ed has loved Lowdens for a long time. I really couldn't speak of his relationship with Martin Guitars. @@sanahaskuranage8071
Hey, Martin is a great company no doubt! @@AtomicPunk820
Someone help me whats the price range for the sheeran guitars
Bob Ster $850-$1300
Heartbreaker Guitars thanks
I can’t decided between s02 and s04. Do I need the cutaway, do you prefer one. If you’d like to tell me your experience I would appreciate it.
You mention about Indonesia, is Indonesia making good guitar??
Juan Kolemar Cahya no
@@saurabhpatil6137 Shechter, Chapman, PRS, Cort, Squire do I need to go no??
The cost of the Sheeran is still pricey the Quality of the Guitar will be Undeniable since they are Made in the SAME Factory as the Lowden line, and overseen by George Lowden himself.
Other companies, like Guild and Fender have their more affordable guitars made in China, which cuts the cost DRAMATICALLY, but in return, you often have cases of quality control issues with the products.
Takamine also have a factory in China, but at least they have their Japanese staff there to oversee the quality control, which lessons the issues somewhat, but still sometimes you have issues with the action.
Martin and Taylor both have factories in Mexico (Taylor have one in Africa too I think) but the staff that oversee these operations are from the main factory in the US (Especially in the case of CF Martin and Co.).
Finally got a S04 in June 2022 at a 30% discount!
Nice deal! Got some new models in as well!
Is that 30% from the annual sale?
First off, I'm a fan of Martin guitars and like Ed Sheeran. Ed's a smart business man. He might own part /all of Lowden. When you own your guitar company you have freedom to play your brand and/or others. Just my opinion on why Ed played the LX1E Martins and Wee Lowens last tour. Or... maybe (if he was under contract with Martin).... it ended. IMO, the Martin LX1E standard or the Martin Ed Sheeran model is a better value and a professional instrument. Ed played one for years remember ! ?!?! :-) You can get ether Martin used for $250-$400. or a Martin Dred Jr with electronics New, for under $1,000. Not knocking Lowden, just think the price point is rather high for what it is.
Brendan I want you to save me a Ed Sheeran Loweden model and I want to come to the shop to test myself k bud!!
I'd love to Dave but the by the time they arrive they'll probably be sold out! We've sold almost half our incoming inventory!!
Please consider removing the loud phone ring at the end …
in this case ,why is it much expensive than the martin lx1e? both use solid spruce and other stuff.
Cuz that little Martin is made in Mexico, it is mass produced, it has a cheaper headstock tuners as well
Awesome video just next time invite Ed Sheeran to do this video!!! Heheh jk!
LOL, Ok Dave, I'll work on it!
You got it Dave!
does this have a tuner and a mic jack input on it?
Tuner - No... Mic jack no
Price?
Start at $825 up to $1300
If the Sheehan is almost as good . Have you just made the genuine article overpriced . Compared to the cheaper lowdens
Lol that’s what I thought. Funny comment re George Lowden saying the difference between a 1500 dollar guitar and a 10.000 dollar guitar is not that great? Funny in as much as the cheapest Lowdens are around 3000 dollars anyway.
@@andybowen1249 well I know that the wee lowden is savage expensive and wouldn't be in the same ball park as the Sheeran models it simply can not be .
The Lowden guitars are fully hand made, is my understanding. The Sheeran line selectively automates some of the process… a genuine Lowden is handmade from start to finish by a master luthier, using only the highest quality woods selected carefully for each guitar… essentially, pretty much every genuine Lowden is one of a kind. The Sheeran line strikes a balance to make it accessible, without sacrificing much as far as the sound goes. You get a Lowden sound for a lot less.
@bryannicholson7111 that makes sense . I would absolutely love a high end lowden having played martins and matons i can't believe lowden isn't front of stage more often . They are a beautifully crafted guitar
A well known guitar shop in England who does videos on RUclips, couldn’t justify advising folk these guitars, when for the same price an Eastman guitar is far superior in finish and sound. You gotta respect that as he lives and breathes these guitars and didn’t feel right pushing those Ed Sheran Lowdens on folk.
Not having a pop at anyone here, and they gonna sell no doubt.
Hi there, Yes we have seen the video. As a shop that also lives and breathes guitars, we respectfully disagree with him. We proudly carry Lowdens and love their product. All of our customers have loved the product they have received, but to each their own.
Well fair play as you also stock guitars like Furch which like yourselves he really believes in.
I’m thinking there’s probably more to it actually as he alluded to his working relationship with Lowden. I’ve not been playing long but I’ve come to the conclusion that going to a shop and playing guitars is a very personal, subjective thing. In my head I’d go with the Furch, but if the Sheran Lowden felt and played right to me, I would obviously get one.
@@andybowen1249 Agreed. Choosing a guitar is a very personal experience.
Can I get a Spruce Springsteen top?
😁
price of solid woods is hardly anything from the bucket that will make the price difference ! ; the BIG difference is WHeRe it is made and how much they UnDer Pay the Asian builders & market to duplicate the Lowden ¡! 😕😣
+plus it will not be constructed as delicately nor trimmed as immaculately and definitely will Not sound as good ¡! 😝
True 👍 but the sheern are made in NI in a production like facility 🤨
A $1000 for a laminate guitar? I don't think so... no matter what name is in the headstock or in the soundhole... The guitar you have is beautiful though.
Solid top so lets talk Martin or Taylor? Unless you go to a 300 series for Taylor you are getting a laminate guitar!
Laminate wood destroys every thing.
It's not really laminate, it's just layered
KLR SGS when wood is layered together we call it laminated!
@@paddyc8200 Really ? Isn' t laminate some kind of wood transformation ?
KLR SGS nope, when you glue thin pieces of wood together we call that laminated, normally the wood on the inside is of poor quality and the wood on the outsides is much better quality, luthiers sometimes use laminate woods back and sides as it keeps the cost down,a solid piece of wood is a lot more expensive.
"Laminate wood destroys every thing." ... Are you talking about the more expensive laminated necks not being as good as the cheaper one-piece necks then? Thought not. Regarding bodies, all-solid is usually best, but the quality of the top is far more important, and a great solid top with laminate back and sides can be better than a mediocre all-solid guitar.
but the martin lx1e is still cheaper than these lowdens
And Richlite fingerboards feel like plastic.
They're cheap mass-produced laminate toys that Ed Sheeran doesn't play. (Ed plays a lookalike custom-built solid wood Wee Lowden) Shame on George Lowden for seeing pound signs.....he's cheapened the Lowden brand!!
Cheap? These guitars for for $1,000+
Appreciate ya watchin', Diego! Yes sir - In the boutique guitar world, having guitars reach 5 or even 6 figures is not unheard of, so the models that remain just over the $1,000 mark are indeed "cheap" in comparison :) Thanks again for watching!
