This takes me back to my first archery competion (i dont speak english cuz it isnt my native language so sorry for mistakes) and I was so close to getting at least 3rd but my trainer wasnt the best so I got 4th (when I say he wasnt the best I mean it in a type that when I got a "bad" round of shots he would facepalm himself cuz "I was so bad" but if another kid (from the same team) did "bad" he would give him a fist thingy (idk how u call it in english sorry) and say something like "Its fine just focus" and more supportive words) and I thinking "hey at least you won't have to stand againts all these people knowing u fucked up standing 4th"... They placed me below the fucking podium so I was even more low then 3rd place. I felt so angry with myself tbh in that moment. And sad and frustrated. Lol

We actually had to study this for a psychology course I took. It's very interesting how different 3rd place and 2nd place think completely opposite of each other. 3rd place is happy because they focus on the fact that they actually made it to the top three, but 2nd is disappointed because they are focusing on the bad. They didn't beat that *one* person, and they feel bad because of it. It's very interesting to me how the perspective completely changes based on placing.

I would say a fourth place person would likely be disappointed in the same way as the second place participant, because they were in a similar situation. (One person away from meeting their goal, the podium)
I think it's the fact that with 3rd you placed one of the highest, that's a good thing, and with 1st, you placed THE highest, that's a really good thing, however with 2nd, I think it's the feeling of knowing that you were so close and you probably think that you weren't good enough to beat the one person.

Now I'm part of this rat race where millions of students are trying to crack entrance exams to be a doctor or an engineer, where just 2% students get selected. I dropped one year to crack neet and jee as I was completely unaware of the concepts of these entrance exams before completing my 12th boards. After the completion of my boards one of my teachers put me in this trap. In my 1st drop I wasn't able to crack neet but fortunately I cracked jee still didn't get the college I wanted. So now I'm in my second drop. I can't just back off now.

I remember crying in first grade because I got 2nd place instead of 1st (I used to always be in 1st place) I was so scared to disappoint my parents because ✨ Expectations ✨ were staring at me. I remember I had gotten silver (gold is first place, silver is second, and bronze is third) and my mom made me feel like I was a disappointment. I was jealous of the 1st place person its unexplainable how jealous I was.

I’m still proud of my self bc in 4th grade I was in the math team and that year was the first time my elementary school actually placed in the top 5, and we got, you guessed it, second place. Back then I wasn’t worried about what place, all I was glad about was the fact that we actually placed for the first time in that school’s history
I’m still proud of us placing, I’m in high school and I still consider it one of my greatest achievements academically

It's like, when you're in 3rd place, "It's fine! I did good and that's all that matters, I'll get better next time." For 1st place it's "I worked hardest to get here. And it payed off" and for 2nd place it's "I worked hard, why didn't I get first? I was so close, but yet so far." Especially when you have strict parents.

When I was a kid I used to participate in like drawing competitions etc (from kindergarten to 3rd grade) and I CLEARLY remember my older sister (10 years older) tell me that 2nd place is the 1st place of losers. I used to be really competitive so that made me cry A LOT. Worst lunch of my childhood; my mom didn’t console me bc it was true😂😂
