- During the Second World War, millions of Jewish people were persecuted and killed. In the late 1930s and early 1940s when they hoped to escape from the Nazis, they found that the whole world had shut their doors to them, with only one exception, Shanghai. Over 20,000 Jews managed to Shanghai, some of whom became the only one who survived in their extended family. Many of them, when recalling their life in Shanghai, couldn't help saying that they felt so grateful to Shanghai and called it their second hometown.
Survival in Shanghai is a three-episode film produced by Shanghai Media Group. The crew went to Germany, Austria, Israel and the United States to do interviews and film the present life of these refugees. Around 40 Shanghai Jewish survivors were interviewed. Many valuable materials and documents were presented to the public for the first time in this film.
I was born in Shanghai in 1951. My father was from Malaya and my mother was Shanghainese. Together with other members of the family, we left China in 1956. During the final year, we lived in a tenement in a courtyard building near Jiujiang Road. I would certainly love to visit the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum one day.
Amazing ! I have never even heard of this before
Praise you Lord God for the people of Shanghai who took in the Jewish people during their time of greatest need
MR. HO, THE CHINESE CONSUL, WHO SAVED THOUSANDS OF JEWS, IS RIGHTFULLY REMEMBERED.
