I'm using this on a Nikon D5100, and here are my following experiences: 1) this thing focuses like a laserbeam. 2) even though my camera have to be stuck in M-mode for it to work, there is only two things I can adjust - focus and Shutter Speed. Challenging, but fun at the same time! 3) if you really hit a portrait photo with this beast, you REALLY nail it. 4) because it sucks up light like a black hole, you can easily play around in the higher shutter speeds without to much issue. 5) it has a sweet spot - everything closer or farther away than that, and you are in for a bad day.
Hello, I guess what people do to make use of the very unique circular bokeh, is use it wide open. therefore, the absence of diaphragm does not come as a shortfall. Flaring, well, this was designed to operate at night. And flaring can be cool, especially nowadays, where we have all necessary tools to enhance contrast and saturation in post. Nice and instructive video. :-)
I have to be honest with you, I didn't shoot anything except the test-charts, haha :) my girlfriend who owns this Lens did all the magic with the footage and the stills :) I'll tell her you liked it, thanks for the kind words :)
Bokeh is really hard to put in categories if you ask me. Every bokeh can be superior for a certain mood! :) I have a Meyer 300mm Lens, but didn't had so many others of them. Not really a fan actually. 135mm is nearly always too long for my taste, even on Fullframe :(
Lucas Pfaff I didn't find 85mm that usable on APS-C. I will concede that 135 is likely to compressed but not long enough for Tele use. I like 75mm on full frame.
Down here at least the Helios is even more expensive, the Cyclop is less. However, I wouldn't at all start to compare them, totally different uses :) I think no one who searches for a Samyang would be suited with a Helios, and vice versa :)
Of course, but as a owner of a samyang myself, i still enjoy vintages lenses, if the price would be around 100$ here i would definitly consider (or even getting one to replace and sell my samyang to expaaaaaand my collection even more hehe)
irlrp well it's not a replacement, it's an addition :) this is no workhorse, this is the artsy funhorse :) A bit sad it's so expesnive, but yet well worth it if you can take advantage of it. My better half might buy the Helios too, kinda soon
Hi there, that shot was taken in the afternoon, the sun was already a bit lower. It's shot against the sun, all the reflects etc come from a sprinkler in the garden which was watering the flowers. I have to admit though I didn't took that shot, it's from my girlfriend when she visited her parents :)
found only 1 for sale. it's $279 USD...Still cheaper than the Helios. Where a good places to look for this? I'm in the States, but have friends that can look for me all over.
Cheaper yes, but I wouldn't consider it the better value. This video is quite old, and these days I feel that the Helios is really the better option. We bought it too, it's simply a better lens :O
Great review. I did nor think it had M42 lens, but I should have. I will be king of swirly bokah in Manchester. Whats with the hands down, you get this on lots of brilliant sites. I can only assume they tripped up with their trousers around there ankles with hands down , when reaching for the like button. There is no other reason for this phenomana
Maybe I'm late to the party but you've made one rather, uh, ignorant-ish mistake: The H3T-1 name is in cyrillic alphabet - it stands for NZT-1 and should probably be pronounced that way when you're referring to the device. Cheerio
Hi there, Ouch, to be honest I had no idea. I didn't learn kyrillic in my life :( I will add that into the description. As an ignorant western european, I didn't thought about the fact it might be actually different to our letters, often when it's kyrillic there are symbols that I don't know from the alphabet for example
Haha, don't worry - these particular letters do look like normal latin ones. Heck, that's part of the charm of old soviet stuff when you're buying it around the eastern parts of Europe - people often don't know what they're selling or mislabel the items trying to transcribe russian names to latin gibberish - all the better for the buyer who knows where to look. You can get many ridiculous ebay/etc bargains this way since few people find these misnamed auctions ^_-
posysajrazdwatrzy that's interesting. I'd have thought people just type what they see on them (like Helios 44-2 or the MIR24) instead of 'translating' that. Good to know, I should maybe look around a bit for that :)
An easy example: cyrillic MIR looks like MUP or MNP, try doing an image google search for MUP-1B or MNP-1B(just checked the latter, wow, haha). And that applies to both lenses, cameras and camera accessories.
There's got to be a way to take the tube off? Somebody needs to buy that one out and do it. Luckily I found my cyclops without the spike on craigslist for $100
TR6Telos you can have real luck with the prices for the nightvision goggles, I had too. Now people usually know and rip people off :( or they sell different versions with the Helios 44-2, the Jupiter 9 or that weird 85mm f/1.2 Helios you can't mount in cams. Great to hear you could get such a bargain! :)
thanks a lot for you message.. Do you have an idea where to find or which brand is selling those. Or which adapter? In the end: do you have more information :-)?
Aya Braem if you have the same lens as in the video, you just need an M42 Adapter. You can get them cheap at Amazon or eBay, there's no need for a certain brand :)
+giftedsincebirth25 it's not impossible but not nearly as much fun. You need good shooting conditions and obviously something like Lens Turbo helps, but it's impossible to reach the same look as on fullframe
You can place something behind the lens, there are also adapters with a built in iris to achieve this. The issue is that this iris (or lid) is in the wrong space, as it needs to be inside the lens to work properly. So you can get vignetting and the result is not as good as a proper iris. That said, these days it's somewhat easier (and last I looked, not much more expensive) to just get the Helios 40-2, even factory new. Better coatings, better throw, and an iris.
Great video! A guy wants to give me the Cyclop h3t1 85mm f1.5 for 200 Euros (Plus adapter to my A7). I'm very interested in this, is it to much? Is it okay? Thanks!
you can get the same distance between lens and sensor than normal lens without that extra part when you use macro tube. does it affect the focus area? i don't know.. too expensive to try.. :D
+Panu Malkasilta I think I can't follow you... it's named "macro tube" for a reason :( the lens needs to be "on point" with the mount, else the flange-distance can't work, and you get only macro. The 1.2 version COULD, hypothetically, maybe work on mirrorless-bodies with the right adapter. But no idea, and I'm not too eager to try because the 1.5 version is available.. :)
***** i may can help people find vintage gear and lenses the guy at the camera store nearby showed me the helios 44-2 when i asked for a nice vintage lens
ronnie tjikoeri the 44-2 is one of the most often found vintage lenses, and cheap too :) I can find it once or twice on any flea market here. A 40-2 is a different story though :(
Taekwondo Analysis the cyclop should obviously not purchased for the cost of a 40-2, and the 44-2 has this effect not as drastic and is a different focal length, the comparison also makes not much sense :/ it's like saying "why bother with the Sigma 85mm, you could get a cheaper 50mm instead"
Thanks Lucas,. Yes I am not in to extracting as much money from the systrem as others, including the goverments. I want people to ENJOY. I think it will survive a nuclear blast, which is ironic as I will not. Sony DSR1 (Zeiss Vario Sonnar)is the VERY best camera bargain (2005 ) Regards, Mike.

It's only available on the used market. Look out for the night vision device more than the lens alone, usually these go cheaper
Hallo Lucas! Gute Infos! Danke dass du den Kanal betreibst!
I don't like the focusing distance. The Helios-40 allows you to get very close to your subject.
Difference is around 20-30cm, so could well be an issue for many! :o
Today's street price of both the cyclop and 40-2 is close to a samyang(rokinon, walimex) 85 1.4 :x
Down here at least the Helios is even more expensive, the Cyclop is less.
However, I wouldn't at all start to compare them, totally different uses :)

I have one question. How did you shoot that beautiful thumbnail image ? Could you explain the conditions of the shot ?

Great video man, I love learning about weird lenses, you’ve got a new subscriber 👍😁
You mentioned bringing ND filters, what's the thread size for these lenses?
I don't have the lens at hand anymore and can't recall on top of my head. But a ruler and quickly measuring it will get you close enough :)
I believe it’s 67mm

Michael Cavazos the rear tubing of the "bad" version contains optics, removing it would likely render the lens useless :/
A good Helios review, nice!
Question what is the size mount I need to get for a 5D mark iii?
What do you mean by "size mount"? It's an M42 screw-Mount
E bay has done the buyer no favours. I got mine for £70 as a NV scope.
