I'm my opinion this camera position is bad for a guitar lesson. Besides it, cool video. Clear and good explanation. Beautiful guitar and tone. Keep posting! Cheers from Brazil.
Modfather, you have, without a doubt, one of the best guitar channels I've come across. Your selection in gear baffles me with every video, thanks for everything mate!
Johnny Marr used a 1959 gibson 355, Seymour stein bought him it in New York so the smiths would sign to his label haha beautiful guitar by the way, I love it!! I have a 335 in sunburst with a bigsby. Beautiful 👌🏻
I've heard Marr talk about that guitar online since I made this video. "Shining in the window..." Great story of a great song. Gibson 300 series are wonderful guitars...
modfather1965 that's the video! This night has opened my eyes is such an underrated song. My girlfriend got me his new book for Christmas so I'm going to start reading that before long. You're casino is beautiful, love the tone. If you use Instagram check out my profile. My name on their is steve_sherwood335
Thanks Modfather for another excellent Smiths tutorial. Working on getting this down, I love the melody so much, and the jazzy feel. The more Marr songs I learn, the more I realize how unique his song structures are. I guess that's why 30+ years on, I'm still listening to Hatful of Hollow. Appreciate your tutorials so much and am grateful.
Hello Mr Modfather, I just wanted to say how wonderful your lessons are. I love the fact you REALLY explain what you are showing. It is helpful that you say which string needs to be played at which fret. Sometimes when you are watching someone else play, it's hard to make out what each of the fingers are doing. I truly appreciate your methodical and patient approach. You explain clearly and precisely. Please, keep up the excellent work. I happen to know there is a community of guitar players dotted around both the UK and USA who benefit greatly from your lessons. You're a star. with best wishes Snigdha
Wow... Great message--made my day. I'll keep trying top improve my method, but in the meantime, thanks for the encouragement. Just went through an interstate move and my head's still spinning a bit. Maybe once I settle down some, I'll learn some new songs and post.
+dvs2751 I get that complaint a lot. What I need is a Go Pro that I wear on my head which looks down at my left hand (he he...). Glad you were able to work it out.
I’m a new subscriber and I love this song...any possible way you could remake this with the camera not at the headstock...it’s almost impossible to see. Also do you do private lessons?
Hi. Thanks for the compliments. On this, I'm playing a '64 Epiphone Casino through a Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal, with a bunch of effects going at once: "presence" tone mod, some chorus, moderate reverb, and high compression/sustain. Most importantly, I'm playing through two amps at once (Vox AC30 & an 80's Roland Jazz Chorus). This provides a much fuller, rich tone, I think. Good luck with it, and thanks for stopping by.
Great stuff, very clear but I can't help wondering if you were more face-on to the camera, it might be easier to see rather than at an angle? Probably difficult to do with having to be so close to your camera?
Yes, Gibsons and Epiphones were made in the same factory using the same materials back in the 60's, so a 60's Epi is basically a Gibson of the era and vice-versa.
Hey Modfather. Great video. Loving your tone. I've just bought a Rickenbacker 330 6 string. Was wondering what amp you'd suggest to go with it? I was thinking Vox. ..
+colin barber Congrats on owning a wonderful guitar. Your opening Pandora's box by asking me such a question... I'd suggest a few amps as standouts: the Vox AC30 or AC15, a Fender Twin Reverb (or any number of Fender amps, like the Princeton (esp. the paisley one), Vibrolux, etc), or a Roland Jazz Chorus 50 or 120. Also, be sure you have some good effects to get the most out of your playing experience. I highly recommend the Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal. It's an older pedal now, so priced low on Ebay, I'm sure... It's all I use and it gives me all the tonal variations I would ever want.
Hi Mark. yeah, I got your message, only my new Google Plus inbox wouldn't let me reply to your message. That sounds like it was a wonderful evening (memorable for a lifetime). It's good to know Marr's as good a guy as he is a guitarist...
Your videos are really impressive. Thanks for this! I have one small request: I'd love if you at least ran through the whole song straight through. I think it would help bring everything together.
+Paul Boudreau That's a good point. I guess the issue there is that I rarely get requests for tutorials right after I post a song, it seems. Thus, by the time I get the request, I've often gotten a bit rusty on the song, and would need practice time to play it through again well. Just me being lazy, I guess... Thanks for the encouragement, however.
@@modfather1965 I agree. Run through the song with the track playing at the end. I would have really liked to seen and heard your work over the track. Great job and great sound.
I can send you a scan of what I tabbed out for myself years ago if you send your email. Also, I recently did an updated lesson on this here on the channel. Maybe that will be clearer. Cheers.
when we look at the "'yes" video on youtube where we clearly see johnny playing this song. half the time the positions are not what you'Re playing ,m and johnny uses those different positions to have a bass note ring out while he plays the melody. which is impossible in the way you show it here. But nice arrangment for easier playing nonetheless. :)
Great tutorial and sounds amazing. Is that a slight tremolo or reverb effect? I have a Blues Jr., and a Strymon Flint. Wondering if I can get anywhere close to this tone, this tone is so good!
Hi. I'm playing through two amps here, across the room from one another (Vox AC30 & Roland Jazz Chorus). That makes a big difference. I'm also running some reverb and mild chorus, which on my Boss ME-50 Multi-effects system, really enriches the sound between the amps.
Cammy That's right... Morrissey sings so many songs with the capo on 2nd fret, the guitar tech just has certain guitars already tuned UP a whole step.. This is probably so he can use his whammy bar and not have any sticking or slipping of strings that might get hung up if using a capo and trem bar, together... Just a guess though. BTW, your epiphone sounds "out of this world!!!" :)
Also it may be helpful to actually play the song in the first half of the video so we can see you do it and the second half breaking it down into the tutorial.
Your transcriptions are pretty accurate but your workflow is too slow. Instead of spelling it out with the string and fret numbers (yawn) try placing the camera directly in front of the fret board so we can see what is going on. Most of Marr's playing style is based on chord shapes and its fairly quick to pick up this way. maybe if you said those instead you might be able to shave off about 3 minutes worth of talk.
Modfather1965 You don't even need to name the chord. Just tell us the shape. Am shape can be barred and transposed. Em shape can be barred and transposed. You get the idea. Another common Marr chord is the major7 shape again barred (10th fret in this song) is a lot quicker than saying 5th string 10th fret 4th string 12th fret 3rd string 11th fret 2nd string 12th fret 1sxt string 10th fret (nearly fell asleep writing that).

I got really lucky on this one... Good story behind it.

I'm hearing a subtle minor tone coming through, though I too could be wrong.;-)

Thank you modefather for your amazing lessons on marr and style council stuff but could you do a lesson on some of the cure stuff Thanks

Marr's 335 was a 50's model. :O

years later and this is what i need. any way i can get this PMd or...?

Marr recorded "How Soon Is Now" with an ES-330, so you are in good company playing this song on it.
