    For anyone wondering about if you can have an bachelors degree before starting a medical laboratory science program, you totally can! I have many friends who have BS in biology or chemistry and it helped them a lot! there are also many masters programs that allow you to get ASCP certified with a previous bachelors degree :)

      Can you provide more information on these masters program pls

    • @missstacyoh
      @missstacyoh 3 года назад +5

      This is true! For those with science bachelors degrees, there are 1-year programs that you can apply to which consists of lectures and clinical training specifically for this field. A bio/chem degree typically covers all the prerequisites needed to apply for a program. The only downside is that most programs do not accept a large number of students per year so it can be fairly competitive but that also depends on where you are applying.

    • @mewdyjewdy9759

      @@missstacyoh I live in Florida. There’s only a handful of schools that offer the program. They state the program is limited and competitive. Do you know why that is???

    • @missstacyoh
      @missstacyoh 2 года назад +3

      @@mewdyjewdy9759 Yeah it seems like the programs are limited and competitive everywhere. I think it's because these programs require extensive training with hands-on experience in the lab and there aren't many hospitals/schools that can accommodate for all that teaching and training. I believe that's also why programs accept such a small number of students per year. I have also heard of some people doing their programs online, but they have to find their own clinical rotations at hospitals in their area.

    Hi. I love your name! Anyway, thank you for doing this video. I am a 41-year-old woman who will be going back to school to become an MLT, hopefully next spring, and even though I have already made up my mind, I still wanted to watch videos like yours of what it's like to be an MLT. I just want to know what I'm getting myself into and mentally prepare for it. Thanks!

    I know someone that is a medical lab tech. She's not certified, has no degree or certification. She got paid training at a hospital. Some places will hire you and train you to be a medical lab tech. Now I do think you can't travel without a certification though. But to work as a medical lab tech in my state, no certification or degree is required. You just have to find a hospital or clinic that will give you paid training.

      I have a degree in Chemistry and I am currently employed as a pre-lab tech while attending uni full time as an MLT student. Its a great opportunity coz you get to learn about pre lab sample prep and running extractions on HPLC/Tandem mass specs/GC/GCMS. Plus the best part is most employers looking for MLTs will pay for your tuition (my job does). Plus I live in live in Massachusetts and as MLT lab assist I get paid $28/Hr. It's a very great opportunity especially if you are introverted coz most labs have work stations.

      I actually have a B.S in Public Health as well , I took chemistry and biology credits though. In some states they allow you to sit in for the AAB Exam and get state certified. After my bachelor's I found an MLT program that was 16 months, completed it, and was allowed to sit in for either ASCP & AMT ,MLT or the AAB for MT. Do your research and try to find an accredited program that works for you! Their are many routes to becoming a med tech!!!

    Hey, I am currently in AA MLT program, it is difficult if you haven't taken similar classes before from another college or as a gen ed, or something that your interested in, then it would be hard, cause there is a lot to it, like she said hematology, urinalysis, immunology, chemistry, etc. But it is a fun program, cause of labs and to be growing things, as well as getting real patient specimens from a hospital to analyze, for practice. it is amazing.

And like you said, a lot of the time, it's a Pathologist, although I worked in a lab where it was a Biologist with a Doctorate. Actually, I have worked in Pathology in a hospital and also in an Outpatient lab.

I really want to be a Lab Technician. I might see if I can visit the lab at my hospital and get more information about it. I love science! It's the education I worry about. I'm horrible at math's!! I already have an AA degree. Not sure that would help me. I like working in SPD but it just doesn't pay enough.

      Totally agree with your comment. I worked in EVS at a hospital for 11 years and decided to go to school for Respiratory Therapy. I did that last year and realized it really isn't what I want to do and wish I went to school for Medical Lab Tech instead. I've recently started working in Sterile Processing and I enjoy it but like you said the pay isn't good. So now I'm making plans to study for MLT, just dreading the demanding school load because it was torture in Respiratory school.

I spoke with a med tech at the hospital where I work and they told me that they can put me through their in-house training and get me prepared for the MLS/MLT exam (9 months) I'm thinking of doing this but I'm afraid that I may not get a better salary then the ER. Sign up for practice exams on the ASCP exams. Score at least 50-55% on those exams and you’ll pass the real one.

      You need a degree to work. You will get it from the tech school that you’ll attend.

    For the ASCP exams does the school lab experience count?

    • @jeremiahshelton5709
      @jeremiahshelton5709 3 года назад +1

      I know I aint here but the school i am currently attending, lab experience counts to know what you are doing, and to get it worked into your memory, for the certification exam, but sometime you probably wont have time to do labs with all the information needing to be met during that week, so when you don't get to do a lab on that specific test, then you will need to remember how to do that test just by reading about it.

    Hey question! I’m a senior really looking into this job, do you have to be good at chemistry to do this job? I’m ok at it but not a pro at all!! Thank you your videos have really helped me!

    • @jeremiahshelton5709
      @jeremiahshelton5709 3 года назад +2

      chemistry is a part of it, but like she said you do get taught how to do the things needed for every type of test. In my MLT I have to take two chemistry classes chemistry gen Ed, and ap chemistry. but like she also said you will need to prioritize, which i am bad at cause as of rn while i am typing it, i am not doing my homework, but you will need a mental rest every now and then cause it is alot of material in just a semester, so remember to take mental rests to gather all the information learned.

    • @luciem4562
      @luciem4562 Год назад

      The chemistry you learn in the program is very different from your general chemistry courses. No, you don’t need to be good at it.
