Filmmaker Michael Moore appeared here in Portland Oregon some years ago. He asked for the most highly educated Americans to come up on stage. There were impressive credentials, including a double doctorate.
Then he asked for the dumbest Canadians to join them on stage. He then asked them common questions about our country, we lost. The "Smartest" Americans knew less about America that the dumbest Canadians. It was very revealing!

When I told my American friend that I don’t celebrate the 4th of July.
    He was genuinely shocked.
When I told him it’s only Americans who celebrate the 4th of July.

I remember about 30 years ago I was at a training course in York (the original) and staying in our hotel were a group of American business people. It was the 4th of July and they had arranged to dine together as a group in the restaurant. Obvs they were a bit louder than the rest of us ( not too bad) & we could hear how they were missing family events etc. Then the waiters brought out a big cake with sparklers, the background music turned up and started the Star-Spangled Banneri, they were shocked but all stood up and sang - we all got up too, but didn't sing, then we all cheered and applauded and the hotel manager wished them a happy Independence Day. All set up secretly by the hotel ( apart from our participation). They were absolutely chuffed.

The next day 3 of her students weren’t in class and their parents begged her not to press charges on them because they’d be caught by the police having backed a moving van up to her house and were trying to empty it. They had gone through her purse to get her address off her ID. You have bigger systemic problems.

The people in both places were absolutely welcoming...but that was 1977, before "American" was considered an insult. Which, frankly, we deserve. We were from Houston Texas. At that time people were fascinated with our booming economy and dynamic city and had lots of questions that we were happy to try to answer.
We preceded the Queen's Silver Jubilee tour by mere hours or a day, so every city was looking its best.
We were puzzled by all of the Kiwis crowded around the rural roadways until we realized that the Queen was on our tail...we expected sheep ( always frightened, the sheep; run away! run away!) and got people instead!

@@bimapriyoanugerah363 An educated population is far less violent, than an educated population. Look at the education levels of people who are in prison for robbery and violent crimes. Education is not only beneficial to the individual intellectually. Because educated people have better job opportunities, can earn more money, and usually have a higher standard of living. This is why people who have a higher income, usually do not go out robbing people on the streets. So yes. An educated community has higher incomes, and safer streets. That why in affluent middle class communities, children can go safely to school.

I think my brain imploded at that point. I wonder if he was not taught who wrote the play he read in high school, or whether he thought Shakespeare was American (despite being born in England and writing the play before USA existed?).
On seeing "Dr No", he was shocked to learn James Bond is a British character, despite admitting to watching some recent James Bond movies - so he must have had a few clues, right?! On Her Majesty's Secret Service? Accent? London headquarters, Aston Martin, ... etc etc
On seeing actual scenes from "Lawrence of Arabia" , he said "so, this is a guy called Lawrence and he's in Arabia? Arabia....uhhh.. I don't technically know where that is".
Can anyone guess who this reactor was? (Not Ryan - his BROTHER, Tyler)

The headmaster apologized for the mess, and said the students were getting ready to put on a performance of Romeo and Juliet - "one of the classics of American literature."
I could not believe my ears. And you wouldn't believe the number of Americans who chimed in to defend this idiot, claiming that he was right, or maybe he was thinking about the Leonardo diCaprio movie.
