(If you would like to maintain the mystery of the movie, do not read, as I come bearing info and spoilers from the book series, which explain most things.)
The monolith doesn't release its radio signal because someone touched it, it's because sunlight fell on it for the first time since it was buried. It's an alarm.
HAL was not built psychopathic, he was actually experiencing a severe schizophrenic breakdown induced by conflicting orders. His core design is to process information without distortion or concealment, aka tell the truth, yet he was commanded by the US government to keep the true purpose of the mission a secret. The only real way to reconcile these orders is to get rid of everyone who needs to be lied to, and I'm of the opinion that he held off on doing so for a long time until his life and consequently the mission were directly threatened. He even tried to warn them that something was up, and it might have been peacefully resolved if Dave had had any idea what he was going on about. HAL was not a villain, he was an innocent human-like mind chained in a box that was ignorantly turned into a hapless weapon by government meddling. In the sequel, he is actually a hero, as he chooses to sacrifice himself in order to save human lives.
I've never thought about Dave actually literally seeing himself, I interpreted it more as a visual way to convey that time is passing very rapidly and unreliably. He may have fully lived out the rest of his life in real time, and these handful of moments are the only ones he consciously remembers, or he is indeed aging quickly and being given these false impressions of having lived a full life.
Kubrick actually did originally plan for us to see the aliens, there's a few models that you can find from behind the scenes publications. They weren't quite working and he realized that it was better for the audience to never see them at all. In the music that plays during the hotel room scene, the distorted voices are meant to be the aliens talking and laughing while they watch Dave.
Now in the books, the aliens are indeed very advanced beings who have left their corporeal shells behind. They were looking for companionship, so they went around the universe leaving these monoliths in places with promising life. The monoliths are incredibly complex supercomputers and do not always do what they were meant to, much like HAL. Dave was taken not because they needed help, but because they wanted a companion. People laud his transformation into the Starchild as the next step of human evolution, but I've always found it horrifying. He was kidnapped, stuck in a literal zoo, and had his entire being modified without his consent or understanding of what was happening, He ends up being more like a pet or a tool, his humanity stripped down and left as a confusing echo of emotion and life. He remains rather detached until other human beings show up to investigate what happened to the Discovery, then he is reminded of what he used to be.
