    It's both. There is a lot of history for the Rose Bowl, but it needs renovations. And you can do renovations without totally undermining tradition.

    • @MrMartinae06
      @MrMartinae06 9 месяцев назад +1

      Completely agree with you. Unfortunately LA isn't a football city, but if you want to keep the historic aspects, you can easily make this a destination stadium, and ideally some place you could bring the superbowl back to? (I realize that's a huge stretch, but it would be cool to see given the history of the stadium)

      And also the Rose Bowl is listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1987. It’s a 100 year old stadium. If there is renovation, it’s a tweak here and there.

    I was just there for the Rose Bowl game. Compared to Bryant Denny with 100k fans designed to handle large crowds, the Rose Bowl just didn’t seem to have the facilities to keep up with the high capacity game. Long lines for men’s restrooms, food venues, transportation back to Pasadena after the game, etc. I missed the first 6 minutes of the 3rd quarter due to bathroom lines…and no TV/monitors in the concourse didn’t help. Renovations should focus on the facilities like food, crowd flow, and bathrooms, etc to help it handle the large crowds…which can be done without touching the overall aesthetic.

    The Rose Bowl needs a near-complete rebuild. The place could not be built today; not enough tunnels to be up to code. UCLA would be wise to move to SoFi; closer to campus. The Rose Bowl might have to be held in the Mausoleum for a year or two, if the Rose Bowl is to do a big renovation.

    Don't be shocked with UCLA coming into the Big 10 and the Big 10 being a football crazed conference. Those stadiums are in cold winter climates, so they couldn't host the college football national championship. It is too risky to host a championship in a stadium where the weather could be well below freezing or there is a heavy snowstorm. Maybe some of those stadiums could host a beginning-of-season game featuring two top teams.

    The Rose Bowl does have the history and because it does have a full time tenant (Unlike that of the Cotton Bowl), it's kept up in repair and probably has many unannounced reno's done annually. College stadiums though have a different level of problems than their pro-counterparts... mostly because of who often owns them... a college can't threaten to just move out (often, they own the stadium.. it's their baby.. they want a reno.. do it.. and pay for it... ).. where pro-teams.. with the exception of that new one in LA and lambeau.. municiple owned.. so the pro teams are damanding more and more and it's a never ending cycle.. personally, the fan is there to see the game... not marvel at stadium ammenities.. oh some you have to have... vendors, bathrooms... etc.. but some of the crap pros are demanding.. just distract from the game.. I think all pro-teams shoudl be forced to own their own facilities.. and I bet you'll weed the crappy owners out of the business soon... like that Fisher guy.

    Frankly, I think it sucks. Yes, a lot of history is there but modern stadiums and their amenities will beat it every time. As a school that has a modern stadium (Baylor) going to ancient stadiums makes me appreciate how far stadium design has come. Not only that but a lot of the romanticism comes from PAC and Big 10 homers, so as a conference that isn't exactly tied to it, it's laughable to run into those that seem to put it on a pedestal. Give me a modern stadium over an ancient bowl design every time with uncomfortable concrete bench-style seating and horrible sight-lines every time.

      I don’t get the obsession we as a society have with “modernization”.
      Can’t a sports venue just be a sports venue instead of a theme park? It’s classic simplicity is a breath of fresh air when compared to all of the “modern” space age facilities the of the Vikings’ new stadium, Soldier Field, and the new Giant Stadium.
      It’s beautiful backdrop, and the fact that it’s devoid of all of the prissy nonsense is part of its charm.
      It makes me long for the days when the game was entertainment enough, and we didn’t night clubs, waterslides, Ferris wheels, swimming pools, and ginormous screens everywhere.

    The rose bowl is not a dump. Far from it. It fits its surroundings to a T. The problem is the entrance and exit traffic.

    The issue with the Rose Bowl is that it's an old stadium. It's an awesome venue for its namesake bowl game, but it needs to be upgraded for modern games. However, it doesn't need a radical overhaul as opposed to just upgrading the bowl seating, put in proper amenities, and putting in a proper exterior facade. I would spend a couple of years doing renovations while letting UCLA temporarily play in SoFi Stadium and have one of the playoff games there.

    It’s not that they don’t want to it’s they can’t afford to, the residents around them only allow for so many games with most being UCLA with a cheap lease, city owns it and they had to buy the golf course next door just to try to make a little money back

    They need to rotate the national championship games but rotate also to cold non dome stadiums. It’s not against the rules to play in cold weather.

    • @HighpointerGeocacher
      @HighpointerGeocacher 9 месяцев назад

      The problem with having a championship game in a cold-weather locale is extreme weather conditions could have an adverse effect on the game. This would particularly affect teams that are not from cold-weather winter climates. Since the college regular season ends before December, even teams from the Midwest like the Big 10 rarely play regular season games in extremely adverse weather. The Big 10 plays its championship game in an enclosed stadium (Lucas Oil Stadium). It would also be hazardous for people to travel to a championship game if a major snowstorm or blizzard occurs during the time of the game.

      @@HighpointerGeocacher What you call a problem I call football. It’s played in all kinds of weather except lightning. I’m aware that the B1G championship game is played indoors but it shouldn’t be. The NFL plays in all kinds of weather and yes I know they play the Super Bowl in warm weather or inside most of the time but even that should be played in different weather. It’s football. As far as the fans are concerned driving in adverse weather conditions I say too bad, us folks in cold weather states know how to drive in it.

    I don’t think you’re criticism is unfair. They should change out the seats and change the exterior. Oh, and for UCLA, please do NOT use those gawd-forsaken tarps. (UCLA will never do what they should do, which is build an a on-campus stadium.)

    The turf for Michigan vs Alabama was junk, looked great but would not hold up for the players. You would NEVER see the field at Auburn in that bad of shape for any game, much less a major game.

      Disagree. Hard to walk around, acoustics are awful, fake grass in Southern California, the scoreboard is distracting, food is awful, and the 500 seats are way too high and distant from the action. For $5 billion, we should have gotten a much better facility.
