- Matera, a city in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, has a distinctive and ancient charm. It is known for its rock caves and stone structures that date back to prehistoric times. The Sassy area of the city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves this heritage. Matera has also been the setting for some historical films, such as Mel Gibson's ‘The Passion of Christ’ and Pasolini's ‘The Gospel According to St. Matthew’.

Awonderful movie about an ancient civilization ! But where are all the people ? Is there anyone in the city ? It looks like there are cars, but so little pedestrian
Italians have a scedule to eat around 14:00, streets are empty then ;) Or maybe it was 18C, thats to cold for them to go outside lol. Italians come out at 16:00 and in the evening

That place is a fairytale🤗 I’ve often wondered, where did a city this size get its food back when it was hard to move things over the mountains? I didn’t see any farm land anywhere near there. Just curious.❤️🤗🐝
There are substantial areas of agricultural land in the nearby river valleys to the west and south. Clearly seen on a satellite view.
